Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · 14 towns
Buckinghamshire runs from the Thames at Marlow over wooded chalk hills to the open Vale of Aylesbury, and roofs weather differently in each. From our Marlow base we survey, lift the moss by hand and clean to suit the covering.

Roof cleaning in the county
Much of southern Buckinghamshire lies within the Chilterns National Landscape, where thin soils over chalk carry extensive beech woodland. Those woods, the valleys between them and the local flint, brick and tile tradition decide how a roof here ages, so we start by asking where a house sits, what covers it and how long it stays wet after rain.
Geology and woodland
The Chilterns tilt gently south-east from the escarpment, and that slope is cut by valleys: the Misbourne, the Chess and the Wye carry rivers, while others are dry chalk valleys with no stream at all. On still nights cold air slides off the hillsides and settles along their floors, so roofs at the bottom of a road often start the day wetter than those near the top.
Beech woodland adds deep shade and a heavy autumn leaf fall. Because the woods reach the edges of so many towns and villages, a house beside a wooded bank can carry far more growth than one a few streets away on open ground.
Three settings
The county's roofs fall broadly into three settings, and knowing which one a property sits in tells us a good deal before the drone goes up.
Building materials
Clay deposits capping the chalk supplied local brick and tile works for centuries, which is why so many older cottages here sit under small, handmade plain clay tiles laid with a great many overlaps. Victorian building brought Welsh slate to terraces and town houses, and the twentieth century added inter-war, post-war and later homes, most under concrete interlocking tiles.
Old clay is porous with fragile edges, so after the moss is lifted it is soft washed. Slate can be brittle and is cleaned from a close, steady working position. Concrete is tougher, but its coating has usually worn, so the aim is a clean tile rather than chasing colour that has already gone.
Towns we cover
Each town below has its own roof cleaning page, written around the roofs and conditions found there. The note beside each one shows what most often shapes the work in that place.

Our home town: river damp and shaded Chiltern slopes over roofs that run from conservation-area slate to post-war concrete, and we have cleaned roofs here.

Learn Moreabout Roof Cleaning in MedmenhamHow a roof is cleaned
The sequence is the same across the county. What changes is the method chosen once we have seen the roof.
We look at the roof from the ground and through a drone, showing you the live images, and plan access that keeps everyone off the tiles.
You receive our recommendations, the reasoning behind them and a defined statement of works covering each part of the roof.
Thick growth comes off by hand from access equipment set close to the roof, before any water is used, so the cleaning can be gentler.
Remaining algae and lichen are cleaned with the mildest method that suits clay, slate or concrete, and the gutters are cleared of what came down.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied in settled, frost-free weather. The project lead then explains what was done and gives aftercare advice for the roof.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
Our base sits on the county's southern edge, within easy reach of the Thames villages, the Wycombe valley and the hill towns beyond.
Handmade clay, Welsh slate and concrete interlocking tiles each get their own approach, decided at the site visit rather than assumed in advance.
A drone survey shows the valleys, ridges and rear pitches hidden from the garden, and you see the images alongside us.
We are fully insured, nobody walks on your roof, and access is planned around steep plots, tight frontages and private roads.

Questions
Often, yes. Valley floors hold cold, damp air on still nights and wooded slopes cut off the sun, so moss re-establishes sooner. Open ground around Aylesbury dries faster in the wind, though shaded north-facing pitches there still gather growth.
Beech leaves are tough and slow to break down. They wedge into valleys, behind chimneys and along gutters, stay wet through the winter and rot into the thin organic layer moss needs to take root. A roof beside beech woodland therefore collects growth faster than an exposed one.
No. Old plain clay tiles are thin, porous and laid with many overlaps, so once the moss is lifted they are soft washed rather than pressure cleaned. Concrete interlocking tiles are tougher but carry a worn surface coating, so they are cleaned at low pressure without trying to restore colour that has gone.
Not usually. The designation protects the landscape and guides development, but cleaning a roof is maintenance rather than alteration. Where a house is listed or in a conservation area we choose methods suited to older fabric, and anything beyond cleaning is a matter for you and the council.
Only once the weather is settled and frost-free. Moss can be lifted through the colder months, so in a hard spell we clear and clean the roof first and return to apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment when conditions allow. It typically protects for between 12 and 24 months.
