Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Great Missenden
Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
In Gerrards Cross the trees that make the roads so attractive are also what keeps roofs green. We clear the leaf debris and moss they leave behind, clean gently for the tile and plan the work around the seasons.

The setting
Before we consider the tiles, we look at what surrounds them: which trees overhang, where their leaves settle and how much sun each slope receives. That tells us where growth will be heaviest and where it will return first. At a free site visit we walk the garden with you and, where useful, send up a drone for a closer view.

Gerrards Cross roofs
Gerrards Cross grew quickly in the early twentieth century after the railway arrived, and much of it was laid out as broad roads of detached houses in large, generously planted gardens. A century on, those trees are fully grown. Broadleaved trees and conifers stand close to many houses, and some roofs sit almost entirely beneath branches.
Earlier houses are often roofed in clay tile, later ones more often in concrete, with slate on some properties. Whatever the covering, the effect of a heavy canopy is much the same: slopes stay shaded and damp, leaves gather in valleys and gutters every autumn, and moss finds the moist, organic layer it needs to take hold.
From the trees
Leaves that land on a roof do not all blow away. Many lodge in valleys, behind chimneys and along the lower courses, where they break down into a damp mulch. Moss and algae root into that layer and spread outwards from it.
Branches add to the problem in other ways. They drip long after rain has stopped, keeping the slope below them wet, and where they brush against the tiles they can scuff the surface and push debris into the laps. The heaviest growth on a tree-shaded roof is almost always directly beneath the canopy.
Seeing the whole roof
From the garden, a tree-shaded roof is often half hidden. Rear slopes, valleys and the area behind a chimney can be impossible to judge from the ground. A drone, where appropriate, lets us look at every part closely, and we share the live images with you on site.
That view shows the type and depth of growth, how much debris has collected and the general condition of the tiles. If something needs a roofer, such as a slipped tile or a damaged valley, you see it at the same moment we do, and it goes into your report.
Timing
Moss can be removed at any time of year, so there is no wrong season to have a roof cleaned. On a roof under deciduous trees, though, some owners prefer to wait until most of the leaves are down, so that valleys and gutters are not refilled straight away.
The protective treatment has its own requirement. It is applied only in settled, frost-free weather, so in a cold spell we lift the moss and clean the roof first, then return to apply it when conditions allow. We talk the timing through at the site visit and fit the work around what suits your roof and your diary.
Afterwards
Once the moss and debris are gone and the roof is clean, we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as standard. It penetrates deep into the material to tackle the spores and residual growth that cleaning cannot fully remove, helping to reduce how quickly the roof greens over.
Chiltern EverGuard™ inhibits regrowth, typically for two to three years, depending on the surface and its environment, and a roof under a heavy canopy should expect the shorter end of that range. Keeping gutters and valleys clear of leaves in the meantime helps. As the period comes to an end, we email to offer a free reassessment.
Start to finish
Each stage builds on the one before. On a roof among trees, more of the time goes into clearing debris and less into anything resembling force.
We assess the roof and the trees around it at a free site visit, using a drone where appropriate so you can see the slopes, valleys and gutters as clearly as we do.
Our written recommendation explains the method for your covering, how the debris will be handled and the reasoning behind it, along with a defined statement of works.
From towers, platforms or poles, without standing on the roof, technicians lift the moss and clear decaying leaves from valleys and around chimneys before any cleaning begins.
The roof is then cleaned at low pressure or soft washed, as agreed for its covering, using the lowest pressure that achieves the result.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied in suitable weather, gutters and downpipes are emptied of everything that came down, and the project lead explains the result and the aftercare.
Good to know
Cleaning removes the growth and debris that are there now and can restore the original appearance where the condition allows. It does not change the shade, and leaves will keep falling.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
Valleys, chimney backs and lower courses are emptied of leaf mulch by hand, removing what the moss was growing in as well as the moss.
Towers, platforms and poles bring us near the surface without walking on it, even where branches make reaching the roof awkward.
Live drone images at the site visit mean you know the condition of hidden slopes before agreeing to any work.
Our technicians are fully insured, and the project lead finishes every job with a clear handover and aftercare advice.

Questions
Not necessarily. We can clean a roof beneath trees as they are. Thinning branches that touch or overhang the roof will help it stay clearer afterwards, but that is a decision for you and a tree surgeon, and protected trees may need council consent first.
Any time is possible, because moss can be removed through the year. Under deciduous trees, many owners choose to wait until most leaves have fallen. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment needs settled, frost-free weather, so in a cold spell we return to apply it later.
Usually, yes. Where it is appropriate, a drone gives us a close view of slopes, valleys and gutters hidden from the ground, and we share the live images with you on site so you see the condition for yourself.
Yes, eventually, if trees overhang them. We empty the gutters and check the downpipes after every roof clean, which removes the moss that came off the roof, but autumn leaves will keep arriving. Removing the moss means far less material is washed down from the roof itself.
Yes, though the shade shortens how long it lasts. Chiltern EverGuard™ inhibits regrowth, typically for two to three years, depending on the surface and its environment, and a roof under a dense canopy will usually sit at the shorter end. We email as that period ends to offer a free reassessment.
Because that is where leaves collect and water runs. Debris lodged in a valley rots into a damp mulch, and moss roots into it readily. Clearing that material by hand is an important part of cleaning a roof among trees.
