Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Great Missenden
Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Many Beaconsfield houses sit under large roofs broken up by hips, valleys and dormers, often with an extension under a different tile. We judge each slope on its own terms, lift the moss by hand and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.
How we start
The front pitch of a big house may be bright and dry while the rear slope, a dormer cheek and a valley beneath a tree stay green all year. At a free site visit we look at every part separately, often with a drone whose live pictures you can watch beside us, and then explain how we would treat each one.
Beaconsfield roofs
Beaconsfield is really two places. The Old Town keeps its broad historic streets, with period brick frontages and older clay tile and slate above them. The newer town grew up to the north after the railway station opened early in the twentieth century, and its roads of substantial detached houses, a good number of them private, carry a wider mix of clay and concrete tiles.
Those generous plots come with mature gardens and tall trees, and so with shade, leaf litter and slopes that stay damp long after rain has stopped. Houses here have often been extended more than once, so a single property can have an original clay roof, a later concrete-tiled garage wing and a flat-roofed link between them, each weathering at its own pace.
Where growth gathers
On a simple gable roof, growth spreads fairly evenly across the shaded side. On a roof with several hips, valleys and dormers it collects in particular places, and those are the parts that need the closest attention and the most time.
Mixed coverings
Where a property has grown over time, we treat each roof as the separate surface it is. Clay tiles vary in age and finish and some older ones are softer than they appear. Concrete tiles are tougher but their texture holds water and growth. Slate is cleaned with close control because it is thin and its fixings may be tired.
Flat roofs over links and garages are handled differently again. Felt, EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass are cleaned gently, with attention to the joints, edges and outlets so the membrane is not disturbed. If one part of the house is not suitable for cleaning, we tell you at the visit and leave it out of the statement of works rather than take a risk with it.
Access
A broad roof needs the operative close to every pitch, not just the ones nearest the drive. Depending on the layout we use a mobile elevating work platform, access towers or telescopic poles, chosen at the site visit, so that nobody walks on the tiles at any stage.
From that position the bulk of the moss is lifted by hand, and only then does the roof receive a low-pressure clean or a soft wash matched to its covering. On private roads and gated drives we confirm parking, water and where equipment can stand before the day, so the work starts on time and the neighbours are not inconvenienced.
Protection
Once the whole roof is clean, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied as standard. It works into the surface to reach spores and residual growth that cleaning leaves behind, and it helps slow the return of moss, algae and lichen.
On these larger roofs the result is rarely uniform over time: a rear slope under trees usually begins to colour again before an open front pitch. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on shade, exposure, the covering and how the roof is cared for. We apply it in settled, frost-free weather, and as that period comes to an end we email to offer another free assessment.
The order of work
The sequence is the same on every roof we clean. The detail inside each stage changes with the size, shape and covering of the roof in front of us.
We assess the roof from the ground and, where it helps, from a drone, showing you the images as they come in. Every pitch, valley and extension is noted along with the safest way to reach it.
You receive a written report and a clear quotation that sets out which parts of the roof we will clean, the method for each and the reasons behind those choices.
In the days before the work you are told who is coming and what to expect, including where equipment will stand and anything worth moving away from the house beforehand.
Moss is taken off by hand from the access equipment, slope by slope. Each covering then receives the low-pressure clean or soft wash agreed for it, with the lowest effective pressure throughout.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes on in suitable weather, the gutters and downpipes are cleared of fallen moss, and the project lead talks you through the finished roof.
Worth knowing
Cleaning lifts growth and staining from sound coverings and can restore the original appearance where the condition allows. It does not mend anything, and a drone view sometimes shows defects that cannot be seen from the garden. We report those honestly rather than clean over them.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
Valleys, dormers, extensions and flat links are each looked at individually, so the method suits the part of the roof it is used on.
Platforms, towers and poles bring operatives close to the surface, which gives better control and keeps their weight off fragile tiles.
The statement of works lists which roofs are included and how each will be cleaned, so there is no doubt about what you are agreeing to.
Our operatives are fully insured, and a project lead hands the roof back to you and explains what was applied and why.
Around the town
We also clean roofs in the villages that ring the town: Seer Green and Jordans to the north-east, Knotty Green and Forty Green to the north-west, and Wooburn Green to the south-west. Most of them sit among more trees than the town does, so shade is usually the main cause of growth.

Questions
Yes. Those features take longer because growth gathers around them, but they are a normal part of the work. We plan the access so each one can be reached closely, and we allow for them in the quotation rather than treating the roof as a single plane.
Yes, it changes the method. Each covering is cleaned in the way that suits it, so an older clay main roof and a concrete-tiled extension may be treated quite differently on the same day. The statement of works sets this out before anything is agreed.
Yes, where they are suitable. Felt, EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass are cleaned gently to lift algae and debris without disturbing the membrane, and we pay particular attention to the joints, edges and drainage outlets.
Shade and moisture. A rear slope facing north, or one under garden trees, dries slowly after rain and gives moss and algae the damp they need. On larger plots with mature planting, the difference between two sides of the same roof can be striking.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. The shaded parts of a large roof usually sit nearer the shorter end and open, sunny pitches nearer the longer. As the period draws to a close, we email to offer a free assessment so you can decide whether to retreat.
Yes. Moss can be lifted at any time of year. The treatment needs settled, frost-free conditions, so in a cold spell we complete the removal first and return to apply it once the weather allows.
