Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Great Missenden
Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Amersham's roofs live in two climates: the damp valley floor of the old town and the more open streets on the hill above. We read which one your roof belongs to, remove moss by hand and clean to suit the tile.

First things first
Clay, concrete and slate all respond differently to water, pressure and treatment, and Amersham has plenty of each. At a free site visit we identify the covering, check its condition and look closely at what is growing on it, using a drone where that helps you see the detail. Only then do we recommend a method.

Amersham roofs
Old Amersham lies along the valley of the River Misbourne, and its conservation area is lined with period brick buildings under clay tiles, with slate on some later frontages. Down on the valley floor damp air lingers after rain and on still mornings, and roofs below the wooded slopes can go for much of the day without direct sun.
Amersham on the Hill grew up around the station after the railway arrived in the 1890s, and most of its housing is later: inter-war and post-war homes, then newer infill, largely roofed in concrete tiles. Those roofs are more open to the wind and tend to dry faster, yet shaded north-facing slopes and gardens full of mature trees still collect moss, algae and lichen.
On the hill
The profiled concrete tiles common on later houses are hard-wearing, but their rough face holds moisture, and the hollows between the rolls trap moss as it spreads. Lichen appears as yellow, grey or white discs that grip the surface closely. It grows slowly, and once established it does not wash away in the rain.
On sound tiles we lift the moss by hand, then clean at low pressure, sometimes with a pole-mounted rotary surface cleaner that keeps the spray contained against the tile. Lichen that has been attached for a long time can leave a faint outline after cleaning, and the treatment that follows helps that fade as the remaining growth dies back.
In the old town
Clay plain tiles on period buildings vary in hardness from one to the next, and some have softened with age. A jet aimed at them can scour the fired surface and drive water up under the laps, so the cleaning stage on these roofs leans towards soft washing after hand removal.
Where a building is listed, cleaning the roof is one thing and any change to its fabric is another. We clean; decisions about repairs or replacement tiles sit with the owner and the local authority, and we will say so if what we find calls for that conversation.
Slowing the return
Every roof we clean receives the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as the final stage. It soaks into the surface and targets the spores and traces of growth left behind, which reduces how quickly moss and lichen re-establish.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. A clay roof in the valley under trees is likely to sit nearer the shorter end; an open concrete roof on the hill, nearer the longer. It is applied in settled, frost-free weather, and towards the end of that period we email to offer a free assessment so you can decide whether to treat again.
How it runs
The methods change from roof to roof. The order of work does not, because each stage depends on the one before it.
We identify the covering and its condition from the ground and, where suitable, with a drone, sharing the images with you live. Access is planned at the same time.
A report and a clear quotation follow, explaining the method we recommend for your tiles, why we recommend it and exactly what the statement of works includes.
Working from towers, platforms or poles without stepping on the roof, we take the moss off by hand, then clean at the lowest pressure that achieves the agreed result.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied in suitable weather, fallen moss is cleared from the gutters and downpipes, and the project lead explains what was done and what to expect next.
Honest limits
Most roofs look markedly better once the growth has gone, and we restore the original appearance where the condition allows. Some marks are part of the tile rather than on it. Concrete tiles lose surface colour over time, and very old clay carries its own variation, so a few areas may stay patchy. Damaged tiles, failing flashing or leaks are jobs for a roofer, and we will point them out rather than clean around them.
Our approach
Clay in the old town and concrete on the hill are cleaned in different ways, and we explain the difference before you agree to anything.
Lifting the bulk by hand means the cleaning stage can stay gentle, rather than relying on force to shift thick growth.
Whatever comes off the roof is cleared from the gutters and downpipes before we leave, so the debris does not cause a blockage later.
Our operatives are fully insured and work from proper access equipment, keeping their weight off your roof throughout.
Nearby
Beyond the town we clean roofs in Little Chalfont, Chesham Bois, Coleshill, Hyde Heath, Winchmore Hill and Penn Street. They share Amersham's mix of older cottages and later family homes, so the same assessment comes first.

Questions
Usually, yes. Old town roofs are more often older clay, which calls for soft washing and a light hand after the moss is removed. Concrete-tiled roofs on the Hill can take a firmer low-pressure clean. The material and its condition decide, not the address alone.
Mostly, yes. Cleaning removes the bulk of the lichen, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment helps the remaining traces die back once the work is finished. Where lichen has gripped a tile for a long time, a faint mark can stay, and we will tell you at the visit if we expect that.
No. A rotary surface cleaner suits some sound concrete and clay roofs at low pressure, but older or softer tiles are better soft washed. We choose the tool after looking at the roof, and the statement of works says which we intend to use.
Yes, with care. We clean historic roofs using gentle methods suited to the fabric. Any repair or alteration to a listed building is a matter for the owner and the local authority, so if we find something that needs that, we say so rather than carry on.
Small differences add up. Which way each slope faces, how close the nearest trees are, the tile type and even the pitch all change how long a roof stays wet after rain. Two similar houses side by side can age at very different rates.
Yes, every time. Moss coming off the roof lands in the gutters, so we clear the runs and check the downpipes are flowing before we finish. It is part of the roof clean rather than an extra.
