Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Great Missenden
Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
High Wycombe climbs both sides of a steep valley, so roofs face every direction and many are awkward to reach. We plan the access around the slope, take the moss off by hand and clean at a pressure the tiles can take.

The first question
On a hillside, getting close to a roof is often harder than cleaning it. A garden may fall away steeply, a terrace may have no side passage, or the only level ground may be the road. At a free site visit we work out the access first, look at the roof from the ground and, where suitable, by drone, then recommend a method.

High Wycombe roofs
The town grew along the valley of the River Wye, and as its furniture-making industry expanded, terraced streets were built climbing the hillsides on either side. Many of those Victorian and Edwardian houses still carry natural slate or clay tiles. Later estates spread over the higher ground around the valley, mostly roofed in concrete tiles.
Because the valley is steep, aspect changes from one street to the next. A row facing south across the town may dry quickly after rain, while houses on a north-facing slope or below the wooded hilltops can stay damp for much of the day. Two identical houses a short distance apart can carry very different amounts of moss.
Aspect
Moss and algae need moisture more than anything else, and on a valley side the amount of sun a roof receives depends on which way the slope faces and what stands above it. Roofs on north-facing hillsides, or tucked beneath woodland at the top of a slope, stay wet for longest and green over first.
Cool, damp air also settles in the valley floor on still days. We note all of this at the site visit because it affects how heavy the growth is now and how soon it is likely to come back, which in turn shapes the advice we give you.
Access
Our operatives work as close to the roof surface as practical without walking on it, and on a hillside choosing the right equipment is most of the planning. Access towers can be set level on sloping ground, a mobile elevating work platform can reach over a roof from the drive or frontage where there is room, and telescopic poles let us work from the ground where neither fits.
We confirm where equipment will stand, how water will be supplied and how debris will be contained before the day, and include all of it in the statement of works.
Terraces
On a terrace the roof often runs unbroken from one house to the next. We agree with you at the site visit exactly where your property starts and stops, and clean to that line, taking care that water and debris are not pushed onto the neighbouring sections.
Older terraces are often roofed in slate, which is thin and may have tired fixings, so it is cleaned with close control and low pressure after the moss has been lifted by hand. If neighbours would like their own roofs done, each is assessed and quoted separately, because the condition can differ even along one row.
Treatment
After cleaning, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied as standard in settled, frost-free weather. It is absorbed into the surface and acts on the spores and remnants of growth that cleaning leaves, so moss, algae and lichen are slower to return.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. A roof on a shaded hillside is likely to fall nearer the shorter end, one facing south across the valley nearer the longer. When the period is drawing to an end, we email you to offer a free assessment.
The sequence
The order of work never changes. On a steep site, more of the planning goes into the first stage so the rest of the day runs smoothly.
We assess the roof from the ground and, where appropriate, by drone, sharing the images with you, and decide which access equipment suits the slope and frontage.
A written report and a clear quotation explain the method, the access and the reasons for both, with a statement of works that shows exactly what is included.
Before the day you are told who is coming and what to expect, including where equipment will stand and anything to move from the garden or frontage.
Working from the planned access, operatives take the moss off by hand and then clean at low pressure or soft wash, as agreed for the covering.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied when the weather is suitable, gutters and downpipes are cleared, and the project lead explains what was done and what to expect.
Know before you book
A clean roof looks far better, and we aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows. Some things are outside what cleaning can do.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
Steep plots and narrow frontages are planned for at the site visit, so the right equipment arrives and nobody has to improvise on the day.
Thin slates on older terraces are cleaned with close control from access equipment, never walked on and never blasted.
On shared rooflines we clean to the agreed line and keep water and debris away from the houses on either side.
Our team is fully insured, and every roof is handed back with an explanation of what was done and what was applied.
Around the valley
We also clean roofs in Hazlemere, Downley, Hughenden Valley, Booker, Loudwater and Flackwell Heath. Their roofs range from older cottages to recent estates, often on sloping ground, so access is planned in the same way.

Questions
Usually, yes. Depending on the site we use access towers levelled on the slope, a mobile platform from the frontage or telescopic poles from the ground. If access genuinely limits what can be done, we tell you at the site visit rather than on the day.
Yes. We agree the boundary with you at the visit and clean to it, taking care to keep water and debris off the neighbouring sections. If the houses next door want theirs done as well, each is assessed and quoted on its own.
Most likely aspect. A roof on a north-facing slope, or beneath woodland higher up the hill, gets less sun and stays damp longer after rain. Houses facing south across the valley dry out faster, so moss and algae struggle to establish.
No. Traffic film is a deposit that sits on the surface, while moss, algae and lichen are living growths that root into it. The film washes off; the growth needs cleaning and treatment, or it returns to the same places.
No. Operatives work from towers, platforms and poles, as close to the surface as practical. That protects slates and tiles from cracking under foot and gives better control over the cleaning.
Typically between 12 and 24 months, with shaded, north-facing roofs usually towards the shorter end. As that period comes to a close, we email to offer a free assessment so you can decide whether to treat the roof again.
