Moss in the Courses, Lichen on Every Tile

The concrete tiles at this Great Missenden home were carrying established moss, algae and pale, well-bonded lichen across the main slopes, hips and ridges. The growth was densest on the tiled turret, crusted thick around its apex, with garden vegetation in direct contact with the roof at the ridge.

Moss is never only a question of appearance. It holds water against the tiles, sheds into the gutters every time it rains, and had filled the lead gully with debris. Left alone, growth like this only ever moves in one direction.

A Drone Survey Before Any Water

Every slope was inspected and documented by drone before cleaning began — the condition of the tiles, the gully, the ridges and the turret, all seen up close before a method was chosen.

That survey is what set the approach for this roof: weathered concrete tiles, so a controlled clean at the lowest effective pressure, rather than force.

Powered Access, Close to Every Tile

Powered access brings Chiltern Surface Co technicians close to every slope, hip and ridge, so every tile is worked in detail — including the turret and its apex, cleaned as part of the complete roof.

Working from the basket, each slope is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure — lifting the growth without stressing a weathered tile or its surface.

Stage 02 · The Moss

The Growth, Off the Roof

This is the growth coming off the roof — thick, spongy moss packed with trapped soil, lifted from the tiles, then collected and removed from site.

Where it is appropriate for the surface, we recommend and apply low-pressure cleaning. The heaviest-bonded lichen is treated rather than forced off — it dies back and weathers away naturally, which protects the tile.

Mid-Clean

One Roof, Half Done

The same slope, one pass apart. On one side, the growth the roof had carried for years; on the other, the buff tile the house had stopped showing.

The line between them is not force — it is the right chemistry and a technician working close enough to see every course.

Gutters, Fascias and Soffits

With the roof clean, the gutters were cleared of moss, silt and leaf litter, and the downpipes were checked and flushed until the water ran correctly and freely.

The exterior faces of the gutters, the fascias and the soffits were then cleaned, so the roofline frames the finished roof rather than letting it down.

Chiltern Surface Co provides gutter clearing and cleaning across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

Chiltern EverGuard™ Protection

Surface cleaning is not enough. Moss, lichen and algae live within the surface of a tile, not just on it — and whatever is left inside will grow back.

Chiltern EverGuard™ is a biocide that penetrates the pores of the material, kills the growth living inside the stone and inhibits regrowth. Once every slope was clean, it was applied across the whole roof and the cleaned roofline.

It keeps working after it goes on: residual spores and the treated, heavier-bonded lichen continue to break down and weather away over the weeks that follow.

Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire

Chiltern Surface Co carried out this roof cleaning and moss removal in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. We also offer roof cleaning, roof moss removal, driveway cleaning and patio cleaning across Oxfordshire and Berkshire, including Watlington, Goring, Ascot and Wokingham.

Moss lives in the pores of a roof tile, not just on its surface, which is why a lasting result is a staged process — the right access, controlled cleaning at the lowest effective pressure, and protection with Chiltern EverGuard™ — rather than a single pass with a pressure washer.
