Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Amersham is two places in one: the old town on the Misbourne valley floor and the newer town on the hill above. Their walls differ, so we read each surface before choosing how to soft wash it.

Our approach
We do not arrive with a fixed process. A soft brick wall with lime joints in the old town, a rendered gable on the hill and a retaining wall holding back a sloping garden each react differently to a cleaning solution and to water. At a free site visit we identify the material and the growth, then explain what we would use and why.

Amersham homes
Old Amersham lies along the valley of the River Misbourne, and its long main street keeps a run of older houses in brick, flint and painted render, much of it within a conservation area. These are traditional materials, often laid in soft lime mortar, and a jet of water would scour both the face and the joints.
Amersham on the Hill grew up around the railway station during the twentieth century and has a different character, with inter-war and post-war houses, rendered elevations and later developments. Between the two, the valley sides mean many gardens are terraced, with brick retaining walls and steps that sit in shade for much of the day and collect algae, moss and lichen readily.
Garden structures
On a sloping plot the walls that hold the garden back are often in worse condition than the house. Soil pressing against the back keeps them damp, planting overhangs the top and the brick coping catches every drip, so moss settles in the joints and black and green staining spreads along the face.
These walls are soft washed in the same way as the house: the solution is applied at low pressure, given time to work, and rinsed down without forcing water into the joints. Where a coping is loose or the pointing has opened up, we tell you before cleaning rather than discover it after.
Traditional materials
Flint is hard, but the lime mortar that holds it is soft and meant to weather slowly. A high-pressure jet can wash it out of the joints in moments, leaving gaps that let water in and loosening the flints. Old brick can be just as vulnerable, with a fired face protecting a softer core.
Soft washing lets the solution deal with algae, lichen and organic staining while the rinse stays gentle enough to leave the mortar and the brick face alone. Where a wall has already lost pointing, repair is a job for a builder who works with lime.
Render on the hill
Light-coloured render makes a thin film of green look worse than it is, and the north side of a house or a wall close to hedging is usually where it starts. Before treating render we check for cracks, hollow areas and paint that is lifting, because a soft wash cleans a sound finish but cannot hold a failing one together. On sound render the improvement is usually significant, with the colour coming back evenly across the wall.
Chiltern EverGuard™
When the surface is clean, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied as the final stage. It works on spores and residual growth left in the surface and helps reduce how quickly algae and staining return.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surroundings, the surface and how it is maintained. A shaded retaining wall in the valley may sit at the shorter end of that range, an open elevation on the hill at the longer.
The process
Each stage has a purpose, and on sloping gardens with steps and terraces the preparation usually takes longer than the treatment itself.
At a free site visit we note what each wall is made of, how sound its joints and finish are, what is growing on it and how slopes and steps affect access.
Borders, lawns, glass and nearby paintwork are covered or wetted, and run-off is planned so it does not collect on terraces lower down the garden.
The solution is applied from poles or close at hand at low pressure and left to act on the algae, moss and lichen for as long as the surface needs.
Walls are rinsed carefully from the top, at a pressure set for the material, and the planting beneath is rinsed clear at the same time.
The clean surface receives Chiltern EverGuard™, and we go over the work with you, including any older staining that may keep lightening as it weathers.
Know the limits
Soft washing removes organic growth and makes a significant improvement to most stained brick, flint, stone and render. It does not mend the wall underneath.
Why us
We name the brick, flint, stone or render and the mortar holding it before any method is chosen, and explain the choice in plain terms.
Low pressure throughout, so lime mortar, soft brick faces and painted render are cleaned without being scoured or stripped.
Planting, lawns and terraces are protected and rinsed, with run-off managed on sloping plots so nothing settles lower down.
Fully insured operatives working from suitable access equipment, with the finished work explained to you before we leave.

We soft wash homes in the surrounding area as well, including Chesham Bois, Little Chalfont, Coleshill, Winchmore Hill, Hyde Heath and Chalfont St Giles. Older cottages and newer houses sit side by side across them, so every visit begins the same way, with the wall in front of us.

Questions
Yes, in most cases. Flint walls are cleaned with a low-pressure solution and a gentle rinse, which leaves sound lime mortar in place. If the pointing is already loose or missing, we will point it out and suggest repair before cleaning.
Often, yes. The old town has more traditional brick, flint and lime, which need the gentlest handling, while the hill has more render and later brick. The stages are the same, but the solution, dwell time and rinse are set for each surface.
Yes. Retaining and boundary walls are soft washed in the same way as the house. They are often damper because soil sits behind them, so growth can return sooner, and we look at the coping and joints before agreeing the work.
No, provided they are protected properly. Plants are covered or soaked with clean water before we begin and rinsed again afterwards, and on a sloping garden we also plan where the rinse water runs.
It receives little direct sun, so it stays damp for longer after rain, and algae needs moisture before anything else. On the valley sides, where slopes and trees add shade, the effect is stronger still.
Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, surroundings, surface and maintenance. Shaded walls, and those with soil behind them, tend to sit at the shorter end of that range.
