Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Beaconsfield's larger detached houses often carry broad expanses of render, and its Old Town keeps older brick and painted fronts. We have soft washed homes here, and every one starts with an assessment of the surface before any solution goes on.
Scale and care
On a large rendered house it can seem quicker to reach for a pressure washer and work across the wall. That is how render gets crazed, paint lifted and water driven in behind the finish. A soft wash takes the opposite route: the solution is applied at low pressure, left to work on the growth and rinsed off gently, however big the elevation is.
Beaconsfield homes
Beaconsfield divides fairly neatly in two. The Old Town, with its wide streets from the coaching era, has older brick, painted fronts and soft historic finishes that will not stand any pressure. The newer town that grew up around the railway to the north has a wider spread of styles, from inter-war houses to larger detached homes on private roads, many with generous rendered elevations.
Tree cover is part of the town's character, with mature gardens, hedged boundaries and woodland on its edges. Hedges and trees close to a house take sun and air away from the lower walls, so algae and green staining tend to collect on garden elevations, side walls and boundary walls while the front stays relatively clean.
Large elevations
On a big rendered wall the risk is patchiness. Clean one section harder than the next and the difference shows as stripes or tide marks once it dries. A soft wash avoids that because the solution, not the operator's pressure, does the work, so the result depends on even coverage and enough dwell time rather than on how long someone spent with a lance in one spot.
We include the elevations that are easy to forget: the gable seen only from the garden, the side wall along the drive and the run of soffit above a conservatory. Poles and towers let us reach high render without anyone leaning on the surface.
Period fronts
Older houses in the Old Town can have soft brick, lime mortar, painted render and decorative details that a jet would erode in seconds. These are exactly the surfaces soft washing suits, though they still need checking first. We look for loose render, hollow patches, flaking paint and open joints, and point out anything that wants a builder or decorator rather than washing over it.
Where a property is listed, anything beyond cleaning is for you and the local authority to agree, and we will raise it if it applies.
Reading the marks
Green film is algae, and it spreads across render and brick wherever a wall stays damp. Black streaks below sills, copings and gutters are usually dirt and spores carried down by rainwater. Orange or red patches on render are often a type of algae too, and they respond to the same treatment. Lichen holds tighter, especially on stone and brick, and can take longer to lighten.
Not every mark is organic. Rust, mineral salts and failing paint look similar from a distance, and we tell you at the site visit which is which, because cleaning only addresses the growth.
Protection
Every soft wash finishes with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, applied once the wall has been rinsed clean. It targets the spores left in the surface and helps reduce how soon algae and organic staining reappear.
How long that holds depends on the house. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, with shaded walls under mature trees towards the shorter end and open, sunny elevations towards the longer, and the surface and its upkeep play a part too.
Step by step
The order of work never changes. What does change on a bigger house is the planning: water supply, hose runs, access to high walls and where the van can sit.
We identify each surface and its finish, check render, paint and pointing for weakness, note the type of staining and agree access and water supply before anything is booked.
Planting, lawns, windows and painted joinery near the work are covered or soaked with clean water, so the solution only stays where it is intended.
The solution goes on at low pressure in one even coat across each elevation and is left long enough to break down the algae and staining.
Each wall is rinsed from the top down at low pressure, and the borders below are rinsed again so no residue sits on the planting.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean surface, and we walk the property with you to explain what to expect as any older marks continue to fade.
Honest limits
A soft wash removes organic growth and lifts most staining, and on pale render the difference is often striking. It will not close cracks, re-bond loose render or restore paint that has failed, and marks set into the surface may stay.
Some older lichen and staining continue to lighten after the visit rather than vanishing on the day, and we tell you in advance where that is likely.
Why us
We have carried out soft washing in the town and are based nearby in Marlow, so its houses and their settings are familiar to us.
On render, paint and soft brick the solution does the cleaning, which protects finishes that a jet would craze, lift or erode.
Water supply, hose runs, high walls and parking on private roads are agreed at the site visit, so the day runs without improvising.
Fully insured operatives who protect planting and glazing before they start and leave the grounds tidy when they finish.
Nearby
We also work in the villages that surround the town, including Seer Green, Jordans, Knotty Green, Forty Green, Penn and Wooburn Green. Many sit under heavier tree cover than the town itself, so damp lower walls are common there too.

Questions
No. Render is cleaned with a specialist solution applied at low pressure and rinsed gently. High pressure can craze the surface, lift paint and drive water behind the finish, which is why we do not rely on it on any rendered wall.
Yes. We have carried out soft wash work in Beaconsfield, and we are based nearby in Marlow. Every property still starts with its own assessment, because no two houses here share quite the same surfaces or setting.
Usually, yes. That colouring is often a form of algae and responds to the same treatment as the green film. Very old staining, or marks caused by rust or minerals, may lighten only partly, and we say so at the site visit.
Mostly. Much of the improvement is visible once the rinse is finished, but some long-established staining keeps lightening afterwards as the remaining organic residue weathers. We explain at the assessment where that is likely, so the finished result is not a surprise.
Only the planning. Access, where the van can park, the water supply and the length of hose needed are agreed at the site visit, so the team knows how the day will run before it arrives.
Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. Where it sits in that range depends on the location, the trees and hedges around the house, the surface and how it is maintained. Walls shaded by mature gardens usually need attention sooner than open ones.
