Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Where the Wye meets the Thames, damp river air settles on the walls of houses that face the water. We soft wash render, cladding and painted masonry at low pressure, giving the solution time to work before a careful rinse.

Our approach
The green bands on a rendered wall and the dark streaks below a sill are usually algae and mould rather than plain dirt. Hitting them with high pressure can strip the colour while scarring the finish and leaving the growth behind. Soft Wash Treatment applies a solution at low pressure, lets it act on the growth itself and then rinses the wall down with care.

By the river
Bourne End sits on the Thames where the River Wye flows in, and many of its homes back onto the water or stand a short way from it. Moist air off the river, mature trees along the banks and shaded gardens keep some elevations damp long after rain. Very often the wall facing the river, or the one screened by trees, is the one that needs the work while the road-facing front stays comparatively clear.
The building stock is varied: riverside homes, character houses, family properties and newer developments, with render, brick, painted masonry and modern cladding all found in the same road and sometimes on different faces of one house. That mix is why we assess each elevation on its own condition instead of treating the whole property in one pass.
Render
Render shows algae more plainly than almost any other finish, because a pale, even surface makes every green band stand out. North-facing walls, areas behind planting and the strips below window and roof run-off discolour first.
Through-coloured renders, including monocouche and silicone finishes, and traditional render that has been painted, are all cleaned at low pressure with the correct dwell time. Before anything is applied we check each for cracks, hollow areas and failing coatings, because those are defects to report rather than stains to wash.
Run-off lines
Water leaves a building along the same routes every time it rains. It runs off sills, vents, gutter joints and ledges, carrying fine dirt and keeping narrow strips of wall wet. Growth then darkens along those lines faster than across the rest of the elevation.
We give these run-off lines particular attention during the application and the rinse, and we rinse around glass, frames and openings so loosened growth is not simply moved from the wall onto another clean surface. Where a streak is fed by a persistent leak or an overflowing gutter, cleaning improves the look but the source still needs fixing.
Cladding
Composite and fibre-cement cladding, common on gables, dormers and extensions, gathers a dull film of algae and grime on sheltered faces. Every lap and joint is a place where a close, hard jet could push water behind the boards.
We treat cladding with a suitable solution at low pressure, allow it the dwell time it needs and rinse with control. Trims, corners and the edges around windows are included, so the finished elevation looks even rather than clean only across the broad central boards. Higher walls are reached from safe positions agreed at the site visit.
Brick
On brick elevations the mortar joints have often aged differently from the brick face and can be the weaker part of the wall. Soft washing lifts algae and mould without driving force into those joints.
Brick can also show white mineral deposits, known as efflorescence, which come from salts within the masonry rather than from anything growing on it. We identify which kind of mark we are looking at before choosing the treatment, so the approach suits the actual cause.
The process
Five stages, with the materials, the planting and the run-off planned before the solution comes out.
We identify the render type, cladding and masonry, check coatings and condition, note nearby planting and drainage, and look for existing defects before confirming the treatment.
Windows, plants, lawns and adjoining finishes are protected as required, and the working area is set up so both the treatment and the rinse water can be controlled.
The appropriate solution goes on at low pressure and is given the dwell time it needs to act on algae, mould and grime without unnecessary mechanical force.
Each elevation is rinsed according to its material, paying close attention to sills, corners, trims and the run-off lines where staining tends to concentrate.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to the clean surfaces. We then check the walls and surroundings with you and explain any fading still to come or maintenance issue we noticed.
Be clear on the limits
Soft washing restores the look of a sound finish by removing growth and the grime that comes with it. It is not a repair. Cracked render, failed sealant, loose paint, damaged boards and leaking gutters remain building maintenance, and a cleaner wall can make them easier to see.
After treatment, some dead growth may keep fading as it weathers. Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and river-facing, tree-shaded walls are likely to sit towards the shorter end of that range.
Why us
We know a through-coloured render from a painted one and adjust the solution and rinse to suit, rather than treating all render alike.
The lowest effective pressure and the minimum solution needed, built up gradually only where a wall genuinely calls for more.
Planting, lawns, glass and painted details are protected and rinsed, which matters most where valuable planting grows right up against the wall.
Fully insured operatives carry out the work, with access to gables and upper walls planned at the site visit rather than on the day.
Nearby
We also carry out Soft Wash Treatment in the places around the village, including Wooburn Green, Wooburn Moor, Hedsor, Flackwell Heath, Cookham and Cookham Dean. Houses there range from riverside to hilltop, and each is assessed on its own walls.

Questions
Damp air off the Thames and the trees along its banks keep that side shaded and wet for longer. Algae and mould establish wherever a wall stays damp, so the river-facing elevation is very often the one that needs treating first.
Yes, on sound render. Through-coloured renders are cleaned at low pressure with the solution given time to act, which lifts the algae without scouring the surface or blowing out the colour that runs through the material.
Yes, where the paint is sound. We check for flaking, chalking and poor adhesion first. If the coating is already failing, cleaning can make that more obvious, and we will tell you before work starts.
Yes, in most cases. Those streaks follow the route water takes off the sill, so we treat the whole run-off line rather than only its darkest part. If a leak is feeding the streak, it will return until the leak is repaired.
Usually it looks much cleaner straight away. Some treated growth can continue to fade as it weathers after the visit, which is preferable to raising the pressure in pursuit of an instant result. We explain this where it applies.
No, not with proper preparation. Nearby planting and lawns are protected before treatment and rinsed afterwards, and the solution is kept to the areas that need it.
Yes. Composite and fibre-cement cladding is treated at low pressure with a controlled rinse so water is not forced behind the boards. How we reach a high gable safely is agreed at the site visit.
