Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Damp air off the Thames and shade from the wooded slopes leave many Marlow walls, eaves and soffits green or streaked. We treat that growth with a low-pressure solution, give it time to work, rinse it away and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our approach
Render, painted masonry, brick and the boards along a roofline all mark easily under a high-pressure jet. Soft washing reverses the emphasis. A specialist solution, applied at low pressure, does the work on the algae and organic staining, and the water that follows only rinses away what the solution has loosened. We confirm at a free site visit that your surfaces suit it.

Marlow homes
Marlow sits on the north bank of the Thames with the wooded Chiltern slopes rising behind it. Mist off the river and the shade of mature gardens keep many elevations damp for hours after rain, and damp is all algae needs. The first places to turn green are usually the ones you look at least: the underside of the eaves, a north-facing gable and the side passage between two houses.
The town's building stock is mixed. Around the centre and its conservation area there are older brick houses and painted, rendered fronts, inter-war and post-war roads bring rendered semis and brick, and newer homes add cladding and uPVC rooflines. Each takes a solution and a rinse a little differently, which is why the method is set house by house.
Under the eaves
Soffits and fascias spend most of the day in shadow, and in a riverside town they rarely dry out completely between showers. Rainwater running off the gutter edge carries dirt and spores down the outer face, which is where the familiar black streaks come from, while the underside collects cobwebs, insect marks and a film of algae.
On painted timber the staining can look like failing paint when it is only growth sitting on a sound coat. The right solution lifts it without abrading the finish, and the result is an even colour along the whole run rather than along the stretch someone could reach from a ladder.
Render and paint
A painted wall is only as sound as its last coat. Where paint is well bonded, soft washing lifts green film and dark staining from it without stripping it. Where the coating is already flaking or chalky, no cleaning method will make it whole again, and a jet would simply take more of it off. Brick and stone wear harder, but their mortar joints do not, particularly older lime pointing, so they too are cleaned by the solution rather than by force.
After the clean
Once the surface has been rinsed and is clean, we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as standard. It works on the spores and residual growth that cleaning leaves behind and helps reduce how quickly algae and organic staining come back.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on where the property sits, what surrounds it, the surface itself and how it is looked after. A shaded wall under trees close to the river is likely to see growth return sooner than an open, sunny elevation.
How we work
Most of the time on site goes into preparation and rinsing rather than into the application itself, and we plan the day around that.
We look at each surface, its coating and its condition, identify what is growing on it and confirm whether soft washing is the right approach before anything is agreed.
Borders, lawns, glass and nearby paintwork are covered or thoroughly wetted down before any solution goes on, so the treatment stays on the surface it is meant for.
The specialist solution is applied evenly across the whole elevation, including the shaded gable and the full run of soffit, and given the time it needs to work on the growth.
The surface is rinsed down carefully once the solution has done its work, and the planting beneath is rinsed off at the same time.
Chiltern EverGuard™ goes on once the surface is clean. We then walk round with you, explain what was applied and what to expect as any remaining staining weathers.
Before you book
Soft washing makes a significant improvement where the staining is organic, and some long-established marks continue to lighten after the visit as the remaining residue weathers away. It cleans; it does not repair.
Why us
We are based in the town, so river damp, wooded slopes and its mix of period and newer homes are conditions we know well.
Render, paint and brick are cleaned by the solution rather than by a jet, which protects coatings and mortar joints that pressure would wear away.
We treat the gable seen only from the garden and the soffit over the conservatory as well as the front, so the finish comes back evenly.
Fully insured operatives, planting protected before we start, and a walk round the finished work with you before we leave.

Homes in Marlow Bottom, Little Marlow and Bourne End are close at hand, as are Medmenham, Hurley and Bisham upstream along the Thames. Damp, shaded walls are common to all of them, so the same assessment comes first.

Questions
Pressure washing relies on the force of the water to remove what is on a surface. Soft washing relies on a specialist solution applied at low pressure and left to act, with water used only to rinse. On render, painted walls and roofline boards, that difference protects the finish.
Yes. Black streaking on uPVC gutters, fascias and soffits comes off with the correct solution and a gentle rinse, leaving an even finish along the run. Streaks on painted timber are treated the same way, provided the paint underneath is sound.
It is usually the side that faces north or sits under trees. It gets little sun and stays wet after rain, and beside the Thames the air holds moisture for longer. Sunny elevations dry quickly, so algae struggles to establish there.
No, not when the preparation is done properly. Planting is covered or thoroughly wetted down before we start, and rinsed again once the surface has been washed off. We build the time for that into every job rather than rushing it.
Yes, once we have looked at the paint and the surface beneath it. Older fronts often have soft brick, lime pointing or several coats of paint, so we check for flaking and loose patches first and tell you plainly if anything needs a decorator before cleaning.
Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surroundings, the surface and how it is maintained. A shaded wall near the river will sit towards the shorter end. We can suggest a sensible interval for your property after the visit.
