Soft Wash Treatment · Berkshire
Hurley sits between the Thames and open countryside, so one side of a house can face damp river air and another the wind off the fields. We judge each elevation, outbuilding and garden wall on its own before soft washing at low pressure.

Read each side
Two sides of one home can look quite different because they get different amounts of sun, wind and drying time. A cool, sheltered wall may be green with algae while a bright one is fairly clear but weathered. Treating every elevation identically for the sake of consistency is rarely necessary, so we size the work to what each wall actually carries.

Hurley properties
Hurley is a village of period cottages, riverside houses and larger countryside homes, many reached along narrow private lanes, with Hurley Bottom and Burchetts Green close by. Properties often come with outbuildings, garden walls and old boundaries as well as the house itself.
The setting works on exterior walls from two directions: damp air off the Thames on one side and wind-borne organic debris off the open fields on the other. Surfaces here tend to green up sooner than the same materials would in a sheltered suburban street, and the shaded sides of outbuildings are often the worst of all.
Outbuildings and boundaries
On a property like this, the house is rarely the only thing on show. A clean house beside a green garden wall, a stained garage or a grubby stable block still reads as neglected. Where they are part of the agreed work, these structures are assessed in their own right, because they are often built from different materials and face different ways.
Copings
A low wall's coping or cap takes rain directly. Organic matter and fine dirt build up on it and are washed down the face below every time it rains, so the streaks keep returning if only the vertical surface is cleaned.
We look at the top and the face together, and adjust for the coping material, which may be brick, stone or concrete sitting above a rendered or painted wall. Different materials, one connected problem, and one plan that deals with both.
Extensions and fittings
An extension can carry a newer render or coating than the original house, and even where the colour was matched, the two weather and collect growth differently. We follow the actual finish rather than assuming every rendered section is the same, and take care where old meets new.
Small fittings matter too. Water lingers around pipe clips, brackets and cable fixings, leaving green or dark rings. Railings and metal vents can leave rust-coloured runs as they weather, and rust is not growth, so more soft washing will not move it. We tell you which marks are which.
Planting
Dense shrubs and climbing plants cut the airflow against a wall and keep it shaded after rain, so growth tends to concentrate behind the foliage. They can also stop the treatment reaching the surface at all.
At the site visit we work out what can be treated safely as things stand and whether some cutting back would help first. Plants that stay are covered or wetted down before the work begins and rinsed off afterwards.
Our approach
We work through the property one surface at a time, in a fixed order, adjusting each stage to the building and the walls around it.
House, outbuildings and garden walls are looked at together: their materials, coatings, orientation, fittings and the growth on each, plus the access along the lane.
Windows, doors, metalwork, fixtures, planting and paving are identified and protected, covered or wetted down, so the application can be kept under control.
The solution is spread carefully across each compatible surface and left to act on the algae and lichen instead of being blasted at them.
Surfaces are rinsed down once the treatment has done its work, with copings, corners and the bases of walls given particular attention.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes onto the clean surfaces, and we explain any areas where staining may keep fading after the visit.
Realistic results
A soft wash can make a substantial difference to walls dulled by growth, but it does not redecorate or repair. Faded colour, coating wear and earlier patching can all remain visible, and on an old cottage they are part of its character.
Walls facing the fields or sitting close to the river will gather growth again in time. Treatment slows that down, and how quickly it returns depends on shade and exposure.
Why us
We are based in Marlow, a little downstream, and know how the river and the open countryside around the village affect exterior walls.
Outbuildings, garden walls and boundaries can be included and assessed in their own right, never tacked on as an afterthought.
We separate algae and lichen from rust, mineral and coating marks, so nothing is treated for a problem the treatment cannot solve.
Fully insured, with access along narrow lanes planned beforehand and planting protected before any solution is applied.
Nearby
We also work in Hurley Bottom and Burchetts Green, along the river at Medmenham, Bisham and Remenham, and in Marlow itself. These places share much of the same damp, open setting, so the same careful assessment applies.

Questions
Because each elevation gets a different amount of sun, wind and drying time. Cooler, sheltered walls support algae sooner, while sunny ones tend to show general weathering instead. We look at each side separately.
Yes, where they are suitable and included in the agreed work. Brick, rendered and painted structures can all be treated, with copings, faces and bases considered separately.
No. Rust is not biological growth, so a soft wash will not shift it. We can clean the growth around it, but the rust staining itself needs separate assessment.
Yes. We assess each render or coating on its own, because a newer system can behave differently from the original one, and we take care at the line where the two meet.
Sometimes. If dense planting stops the treatment reaching the wall, cutting back helps. We tell you at the site visit what can be treated as it stands, and protect whatever planting remains.
No, it is a planning question rather than an obstacle. We check turning, parking and hose runs at the site visit, so nothing is being worked out on the morning.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment applied after cleaning typically protects for between 12 and 24 months. Walls facing the fields or near the river, and those in heavy shade, tend towards the shorter end.
