Gutter Cleaning · Berkshire
Between the Thames and open fields, gutters in Hurley collect debris in every season: blossom and seed in spring, leaves in autumn, moss off old clay tiles in winter. We clear the lot, dormers included, and flush each downpipe.

First things
What you see in a gutter from the ground is the most recent fall: a scatter of leaves or a few twigs. Underneath sits everything from the months before, wet and broken down into a dark, dense silt. That lower layer does the real damage, because it takes up depth the water needs and holds fresh debris in place. A thorough clean takes the channel back to its base.

Hurley homes
Hurley is a small Thames-side village with open countryside on its other sides. Its homes include period cottages, village houses, riverside properties and larger country houses reached by private lanes, along with hamlets such as Hurley Bottom and Burchetts Green close by. Many older roofs are clay tile, with dormer windows set into the slope.
Two things feed the gutters here. Damp air off the river keeps roofs wet, so moss grows readily on the tiles and breaks away into the channel below. Wind across the open fields carries seed, chaff and leaf litter onto roofs, adding to what falls from the garden trees.
Through the year
Each season leaves its own deposit. In spring, blossom, catkins and seed settle in the channel and stay wet. Over summer, wind-blown material from nearby fields adds to it. Autumn brings the main leaf fall on top, and through winter, moss loosened by rain and frost slides off the tiles.
By the time anyone notices an overflow, the gutter holds a year's worth of layers, compressed at the bottom. We remove all of it, down to the base of the channel, rather than lifting off the loose leaves on top.
Dormers and valleys
Dormer windows have their own short gutters, often discharging onto the main roof below rather than into a downpipe. Where a dormer cheek meets the main slope, debris also gathers in the valley. These spots are hard to see from the ground and easy to forget.
Many can be reached with the vacuum pole from below. Where a dormer gutter sits too high or too far back, the access is agreed at the site visit. Old clay tiles are fragile, so we never walk on the roof to reach them.
Long runs
On a long elevation, the stretch above the front door may be perfectly clear while the outlet ten metres away is plugged. In heavy rain, water runs freely along the clear part, meets the blockage and backs up, then spills at whatever joint or dip it reaches first.
Because the symptom can appear well away from its cause, we clear and test every run from one end to the other, not just the section where you have seen water come over.
Below the eaves
Gutters often run directly above front doors, side passages and terraces. Wet gutter waste is dark and staining, and if it is tipped out by hand it can mark pale stone, render or paving beneath. The vacuum draws it straight into the machine, and anything cleared by hand is bagged at the gutter rather than dropped. Before we leave, we walk the ground below each run and clear anything that has strayed onto steps, sills or paving.
Our routine
Every house differs in layout, so the access for each run is agreed at the site visit before any work is booked.
We look at each run, dormer, valley and outlet from the ground, and note brackets that have dropped, joints that weep and anything at the roof edge that concerns us.
The pole-fed vacuum, worked from ground level wherever possible, removes the loose top layer and the compacted silt beneath, along the full length of each run.
Water is run through each outlet and downpipe so we can see it leave. If it backs up below ground, we explain what that suggests rather than guess.
Brackets and joints that have worked loose are re-seated where that will last. Cracked lengths, poor falls and failed seals are recorded for a specialist.
Paths and doorways are checked and left clean, and you receive a short summary of the gutters and the roof edge we could see.
Good to know
Clearing gives the water its route back, provided the gutter is sound. It will not mend cracks, reseal joints, correct a run that falls the wrong way or reach a blocked underground drain.
Why us
We take out the compacted layers at the bottom of the channel as well as the fresh leaves sitting on top.
Clay-tiled roofs and dormers are worked from the ground or from suitable access, never by walking on fragile tiles.
Waste is vacuumed or bagged at the gutter, so doorsteps, pale stone and planting below are not marked by it.
Our operatives are fully insured, and the owner of the business is accountable for each job we carry out.
Nearby
We also clear gutters in Hurley Bottom and Burchetts Green, at Remenham towards Henley, at Medmenham upstream and at Bisham and Marlow downstream. Lanes and outbuildings vary, so access is always checked first.

Questions
Because leaves are only one source. Blossom and seed fall in spring, wind carries chaff and litter off nearby fields in summer, and moss slides off the tiles through winter. Homes here often collect material in every season.
Yes. Many dormer gutters can be reached with the vacuum pole from the ground. Where one is too high or set too far back, we agree suitable access at the site visit, and we never walk on the roof to reach it.
Yes. The compacted silt at the bottom of the channel is often the main restriction. We clear the run back to its base so it has its full depth again.
No. Gutter cleaning removes the moss that has already fallen into the channel. Moss still growing on the tiles will carry on shedding, and dealing with that is Roof Cleaning, which is a separate service.
No. Guards keep out larger leaves, but seed, silt and moss still find their way in and settle beneath them. Gutters with guards need checking and clearing too, and the guards are lifted and refitted as part of the job.
Rarely. We check turning, parking and how far the hose has to reach at the site visit, so the crew knows what to expect before the day.
