Gutter Cleaning · Berkshire
Twyford grew in stages, from farming village to railway settlement to post-war estates, and its gutters span all of those decades. We clear each system in the way its age and material call for, flush the pipes and report on its condition.

The basics
Debris blocks every gutter in the same way, but older and newer systems give way at different points. Cast iron rusts and its joints harden. Plastic fitted decades ago turns brittle and its seals perish. Modern runs are sound but can be hung with very little fall. Knowing which you have tells us how to clear it safely and what to look for once it is empty.

Twyford homes
Before the railway arrived in the nineteenth century, Twyford was mainly an agricultural village. The line brought new houses around the station, and after the Second World War residential estates spread to the north and south. Today there are conservation areas around the village centre and the station, a number of listed buildings, and later homes in between.
That history shows along the rooflines. Older village and Victorian houses may still have cast iron or traditional profiles, many post-war homes carry plastic guttering that has been up for a long time, and newer properties have modern uPVC. The River Loddon passes the village, and mature trees stand in many established gardens, so leaves and damp reach all three.
Older houses
Cast iron is strong but heavy, and it corrodes where wet debris has lain against it. The joints between lengths were sealed with putty or compound that dries out over the years. We clear these gutters without levering at them, from the ground where the vacuum pole can reach, and look closely at the channel once it is empty.
Rust, cracked lengths and joints that weep are reported for a specialist in period rainwater goods rather than disturbed. Cleaning is about removing the debris, not rebuilding a system that wants proper repair.
Post-war estates
Plastic gutters fitted many years ago have usually faded and become less flexible. The rubber seals in their joints harden and shrink, and the clips that hold each length can loosen as the plastic moves with the seasons. Runs start to sag between brackets, and the low points collect silt and standing water.
We clear them gently, re-seat brackets and joints that have simply slipped, and tell you where a seal has failed or a section has become brittle. Old discolouration on the outer face will not wash out of aged plastic.
Newer homes
Newer houses have deeper, smoother gutters that carry more water, but they block in the same way once leaves and moss settle at the outlet. Some are hung with only a slight fall, so water and silt linger along the run rather than draining quickly. Gardens that were young when the house was built now have trees reaching the eaves.
These systems are usually straightforward to clear with the vacuum pole. The main thing is to keep the outlets open before a small build-up becomes a regular overflow.
What we do
The steps are the same for every house. The care taken at each one depends on the material and condition we found at the site visit.
We note whether the gutters are cast iron, older plastic or modern uPVC, and record sags, splits, weeping joints and loose fixings before any debris is moved.
A pole-fed vacuum, worked from the ground where possible, removes leaves, moss and silt into the machine. Where a run is out of its reach, we use a properly footed ladder.
Water is poured along each run and down every downpipe so we can see it drain. Anything holding it up below ground is noted for separate investigation.
Clips, brackets and joints that have moved are pushed back where that is a minor job. Brittle sections, failed seals and rusted cast iron are left for a repair specialist.
You receive a short note on the condition of the gutters and the roof edge above, so you can plan any repairs with clear information.
Be realistic
A cleared gutter carries water again if it is in sound order. Cleaning will not restore a perished seal, toughen brittle plastic, remove rust from cast iron or correct a run that has lost its fall.
On older systems, emptying the channel sometimes reveals a crack or a weeping joint that debris was hiding. That is the condition becoming visible, not the clean causing it, and we point it out so you can decide on repairs.
Why us

Questions
Yes, with care. Aged plastic is less flexible, so we avoid pressing on it and work the vacuum pole gently along the channel. If a section is already brittle or cracked, we tell you rather than risk making it worse.
Usually because the brackets have loosened or the plastic has softened and dropped over time, and the weight of wet debris adds to it. We re-seat brackets that have slipped where that will hold, and report runs that need re-hanging.
Yes. We clear them from the ground where possible and without levering at the joints. Rust, cracks and failed seals are recorded for a specialist in period rainwater goods.
Yes. Every downpipe on the agreed runs is flushed with water once the gutter above is clear. If the water backs up further down, we explain what that indicates.
Once or twice a year suits most homes, and more often under mature trees. Older gutters benefit from regular clearing because standing water and wet debris speed up wear on seals and metal.
Mostly. We wash the outer faces of the gutters, fascias and soffits to remove green streaking. Fading or yellowing in older plastic is part of the material and will remain.
