Soft Wash Treatment · 10 towns
From the Thames villages around Hurley and Cookham to Victorian Maidenhead, Windsor and Reading and the wooded, planned towns further south, Berkshire has a wide mix of walls. We soft wash each one at low pressure and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

East Berkshire
From Hurley down to Windsor, the Thames marks Berkshire's northern edge, with Buckinghamshire across the water. Behind the river, much of the housing was built after the railways arrived, then extended and refinished many times. The result is a house that may be part red brick, part render and part painted, with a uPVC roofline above. Soft washing lets each part be cleaned in the way that suits it.
The Thames edge
Along this stretch, past Bisham, Cookham and Maidenhead, many houses sit close to the water on low ground that holds mist and moisture. Walls facing the river, or screened from the sun by willows and riverside planting, stay damp the longest, and green film builds on them first.
Being near the river also changes how a soft wash is carried out. The solution is mixed to the lowest strength the growth needs, applied only where needed and given time to work rather than topped up. Rinse water is directed away from banks, ditches and borders instead of being left to find its own way.
Railway brick
The railways turned Maidenhead, Reading and Windsor into growing towns in the nineteenth century, and long streets of red brick, some patterned with darker headers, came with them. Since then most of those houses have gained something: a rendered rear extension, a painted side wall, a loft conversion with tile hanging or cladding. Treating the house as a set of materials is what gives an even result:
Woods and planned towns
South of the river corridor, the country around Ascot and Bracknell is heavily wooded, and Bracknell itself was planned after the war as a New Town with green space laid out between its neighbourhoods. Wokingham pairs an old market centre with a great deal of newer housing. Mature trees close to houses mean shaded elevations, leaf litter on sills and roofline boards that rarely dry out in winter.
The newer homes in this part of Berkshire tend to use pale render, fibre-cement boards and white uPVC fascias and soffits. These finishes are smooth and factory-coloured, so they show algae and black streaking early and cannot simply be refreshed with a coat of paint. A low-pressure soft wash cleans them without scuffing the coating.
Towns in Berkshire
The towns below run from the Thames villages nearest our Marlow base to the larger towns further south and west. Each note introduces the walls we tend to meet there.

Railway-era red brick beside rendered extensions and painted side walls, with salts told apart from growth and narrow side passages treated with care.

Older frontages full of sills, surrounds and string courses that hold growth after the open wall is clean, sometimes tested on a small patch first.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Windsor
Pale façades under mature trees often show a sheltered band beneath the eaves, so the whole affected area is treated, with large windows planned around.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Ascot
Low ground beside the Thames keeps walls wet under sills and behind climbers, and coatings and possible leaks are checked before any treatment.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Cookham
Directly across the river from Marlow, where the treatment is kept measured and rinse water is steered well away from the bank and the borders.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Bisham
River air on one side and field debris on the other, so each elevation, outbuilding and garden wall is judged and treated on its own.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Hurley
Village brick, station-era houses and rendered post-war estates, with every painted finish checked for sound adhesion before a soft wash begins.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Twyford
Long Victorian streets of red and patterned brick, often with rendered bays and later extensions, where mortar joints and paint call for low pressure.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Reading
Planned post-war neighbourhoods and newer developments set among generous green space, where rendered and clad homes beneath trees show algae early.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in Bracknell
A conservation-area centre with timber-framed buildings faced in brick, ringed by newer homes in render and cladding, each cleaned to suit its finish.
Learn Moreabout Soft Wash Treatment in WokinghamStep by step
Each visit follows the same five steps, with extra care wherever a house backs onto the river or stands beneath trees.
At a free site visit we look at each face of the house, its outbuildings and garden walls, separating growth from salts, leaks and failing paint before recommending a method.
Planting, lawns, glass and painted joinery are covered or wetted down, and on riverside plots we decide in advance where the rinse water will run.
A specialist solution is applied at low pressure, at the strength that particular growth needs, across the whole affected elevation rather than only the most obvious stains.
Once the solution has done its work, the surface and the planting around it are rinsed down, and the finish is checked across the whole wall before we move on.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes onto the clean surface to help reduce regrowth, with protection typically lasting between 12 and 24 months depending on setting, surface and upkeep.
Our approach
Our base in Marlow sits across the river from Bisham, so the Berkshire bank is part of our home ground rather than a long journey away.
Brick, render, paint, cladding and uPVC on a single house are each given the solution, dwell time and rinse that suit them.
Every job is fully insured, and the care we take around neighbouring property, gardens and riverside boundaries is built into the time we allow.
If a mark is a leak, salts or tired paint rather than growth, we say so before cleaning instead of washing over it.

Questions
Yes, with planning. We use the lowest strength that deals with the growth, apply it only where it is needed and direct rinse water away from banks, ditches and planting. The time for that containment is built into the job, which is why a riverside visit can take longer than a similar house inland.
Yes. Most houses we see in Berkshire mix several finishes. Each is treated as its own area, with the solution and dwell time set for that material, so the brick is not over-wetted and the render is not left patchy, and the elevation still finishes evenly.
Usually efflorescence: salts carried out of the brick or mortar as moisture dries. They are not organic growth, so a soft wash solution does not treat them in the same way. We identify them at the site visit and explain what they suggest about damp in the wall.
Not when the preparation is done properly. Borders, climbers and lawns are covered or thoroughly wetted before the solution goes on, then rinsed down afterwards. Climbers fixed tightly to a wall may need tying back first, and we agree that with you in advance.
Often, yes. Pale render, fibre-cement boards and white uPVC are smooth and light, so they show algae and black streaking early, particularly under trees. They also carry factory finishes that a pressure washer can scuff, which makes a low-pressure soft wash the safer choice.
It varies with the setting. After a soft wash, Chiltern EverGuard™ helps reduce regrowth, and protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. Walls beside the Thames or under heavy tree cover usually sit nearer the shorter end; open, sunny elevations nearer the longer end.
