Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Medmenham is a small Thames-side village of flint and brick cottages and larger houses in long gardens. We soft wash walls, copings and textured render at low pressure, and plan where every drop of rinse water goes.

Our starting point
Older walls carry more than dirt. They hold the marks of repairs, changes in brick and the gentle variation of age, and none of that should be scrubbed away. Soft Wash Treatment removes the biological layer of algae, lichen and mould with a solution applied at low pressure and left to act, so the material underneath can be seen again without being changed.

The village
Medmenham lies on the Buckinghamshire bank of the Thames between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames, with the wooded Chiltern hills rising behind it. The river, mature trees and shaded gardens keep moisture around buildings for long periods, and moisture is what every kind of organic growth follows.
Homes range from village cottages built in flint and brick, often with soft lime pointing, to larger houses and country residences with long elevations, outbuildings and garden walls. Many of these walls have been altered and repaired over generations, so a single face can hold several materials and mortars side by side. That history shapes how each wall should be cleaned.
Long elevations
A long elevation looks like one cleaning area, but its ends and middle often behave differently. The part open to the breeze dries quickly, while a stretch beside a projecting wing, a hedge or a large shrub can stay damp for most of the day.
The heaviest green does not mean the wall is dirtier overall; it shows where moisture lingers. We read those patterns before treatment so the effort goes where growth is actually established, and we do not keep treating sound, naturally weathered areas just to make the whole wall look artificially identical.
Garden walls
Freestanding garden and boundary walls are exposed on both faces and along the top. Copings take rain directly, hedges shade one side, and soil keeps the base damp. They can carry thick bands of algae and lichen even where the house is fairly clear.
Water running over a coping follows the same path each time, carrying organic matter down the face and leaving dark streaks below joints and edges. Where practical we treat the coping with the wall, so the streaks are dealt with at their source. Loose masonry, failing mortar or damaged copings are noted as repairs, not washed.
Texture and flint
Rough-cast and other textured renders, rough brick and flint panels give algae plenty of small hollows to sit in. A jet strong enough to clear those hollows would also wear down the raised surface around them and wash out lime pointing between flints.
Soft washing reaches into the texture with the solution rather than with force, so the growth is treated where it sits and the finish keeps its character. The rinse is gentle and kept off weak joints, and anything that looks fragile is pointed out to you first.
Not all marks are growth
Once a green film has gone, replacement bricks, repointed patches and older repairs can stand out more, because their colour and age differ from the original wall. That is the true wall showing through, and we set that expectation before we start.
Some marks also need a different diagnosis. A patch under an overflow pipe may be growth fed by a leak, which will return until the leak is fixed. Rust, mineral deposits, old paint and adhesive are not biological and may need another method. When the wall is clean, we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment to help reduce the return of growth.
How we work
On homes this close to the Thames, where the rinse water goes is decided before anything is applied.
We identify the materials and finish, the type of growth, how moisture sits on each wall, earlier repairs and any areas that need extra care.
Planting, paving, glazing and adjoining finishes are protected or wetted down, and the rinse route is planned so run-off is controlled rather than left to find its own way.
The solution is applied at controlled low pressure and allowed the contact time it needs to work on algae, lichen and mould across the agreed walls and copings.
Where the method calls for it, walls are rinsed gently around corners, ledges, copings and lower sections, and surrounding planting is rinsed through.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the cleaned surfaces, and we walk you round to separate removed growth from weathering, repairs or marks that need another approach.
A realistic finish
Brick colour varies, render weathers differently on each side of a house, and old repairs remain visible. The aim is to remove the biological layer hiding the surface, not to make every part of the wall identical. Cleaning does not repair masonry or mortar.
Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on how close the wall is to the river and trees, its material and its upkeep. Shaded garden walls are likely to sit at the shorter end.
Why us
We clean to reveal the material, not to change it, and we will not push a treatment harder just to hide honest age and old repairs.
Close to the Thames, the rinse route and containment are worked out before we start, and the solution is used only where it is needed.
House walls, garden walls, copings and outbuildings are each assessed on their own condition rather than treated as one surface.
Every job is carried out by fully insured operatives, and we are based just upriver in Marlow, so we know these conditions well.
Nearby
We also carry out Soft Wash Treatment in the surrounding villages and hamlets, including Hambleden, Frieth, Fingest, Hurley and Remenham. Many share the same shaded, rural setting, and each property is assessed on its own walls.

Questions
Yes, with low pressure and care around the joints. Flint walls depend on their pointing, and lime mortar is soft. The solution does the cleaning, the rinse is gentle, and any loose pointing is shown to you rather than washed further.
Yes. Freestanding walls are assessed separately from the house, including their copings, mortar and the planting around them. They are often greener than the house because they are exposed on both faces and along the top.
No, not if the job is planned properly, and that planning happens before we start. We decide the rinse direction and containment for the property, keep the solution to the surfaces that need it and protect planting and paving around the wall.
Because the green film was hiding them. Replacement bricks, newer mortar and patched render differ in colour and age from the original wall, and once the growth has gone those differences show. That is the wall's real appearance, not a fault in the clean.
Yes, where the render is sound. The solution reaches into the texture and acts on the growth there, so there is no need for pressure that would wear down the raised surface.
No. Soft washing is for biological growth. Rust, mineral deposits, old paint and adhesive marks are a different matter and may need another method or may remain. We identify them at the site visit so you know beforehand.
Only for a while. It removes the growth the leak has encouraged, but the stain will come back while water keeps running down the wall. Repairing the overflow is what stops it returning.
