Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Marlow Bottom runs up a wooded valley, and many homes sit among tall hedges, climbers and mature trees. Walls and rooflines in that shade stay damp and turn green. We soft wash them at low pressure, with the garden protected first.

Why it matters here
Algae, mould and lichen need a surface that stays damp, and few things keep a wall damp like a tall hedge or a tree canopy beside it. Soft Wash Treatment removes that growth with a solution applied at low pressure and left to act, then rinsed away. In a garden this green, the preparation around the wall matters as much as the treatment on it.

The valley
Marlow Bottom stretches north from Marlow up a valley in the Chilterns, with woodland on the slopes and the main road running along the valley floor. Much of it is shaded for a good part of the day, and established gardens with mature trees and tall hedges add more shade at the level of the house walls.
The homes are largely established family houses, many detached and set in generous plots, with brick, render and painted finishes and uPVC rooflines. Climbers, shrubs and borders often grow right up to the walls. That makes for an attractive setting and a sheltered one: the north side of a house, a wall screened by hedging or a roofline under branches can stay damp long after the front has dried.
Under the trees
Rooflines under trees take drips from leaves long after the rain has stopped, and that keeps the uPVC damp. Black streaking forms below gutter joints, a green film settles along shaded runs, and debris dropped from branches leaves dark marks at corners and outlets.
The right solution applied at low pressure lifts that staining from fascias, soffits and the outer faces of gutters, leaving an even finish along the whole run. We treat the roofline and the walls below in the same visit where both need it, so one does not show up the other.
Close planting
Climbers, wall shrubs and hedges are part of the appeal of many gardens here, but they hold moisture against the wall behind them and cut the airflow. Walls in that position are usually where the heaviest growth sits.
Before treatment we talk through with you what can be tied back, what needs sheeting and what should be thoroughly wetted down. Pots, furniture and movable items are cleared from the working area. The solution is then applied carefully around the planting, and plants are rinsed through once the wall is done. We will not treat behind a climber we cannot protect properly.
Moisture patterns
The spread of green on a wall tells you where it dries slowly. It is often heaviest close to the ground, beside downpipes, under sills and behind the densest planting, then fades out across the drier parts of the elevation.
Treating only the darkest area leaves the lighter film around it in place and creates a visible edge. We include the transition zone around the obvious staining so the wall looks even, without extending the treatment onto surfaces that are already clean. On painted walls, we check the coating is sound before any of this begins.
After the clean
A wall that sits in shade for much of the day will always be more inviting to algae than an open one. That is why the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied once the surface is clean: it helps reduce how quickly growth re-establishes.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on how shaded and sheltered the wall is, the finish and how the garden around it is maintained. Under heavy tree cover, expect the shorter end of that range, and keeping hedges trimmed back from the wall helps more than people expect.
Step by step
Four stages, with most of the care going into the first two.
We identify the wall finishes and roofline, the type of growth, any existing defects and the planting close to the house, then decide what needs protecting and how.
Climbers and shrubs are tied back, sheeted or pre-wetted as agreed, movable items are cleared, and the application route is planned around windows, doors and vents.
The selected solution is applied evenly at low pressure and given suitable contact time, so the growth is broken down rather than blasted from the wall.
Walls and planting are rinsed, Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean surfaces, and we go over the result with you, including any further fading expected as the wall weathers.
Honest limits
Soft washing removes growth and the staining that comes with it, and it can make a significant improvement to a shaded elevation. It does not repair cracked render, failed paint, damaged pointing or a leaking gutter, and those can become easier to see once the green film has gone. Some treated residue may keep lightening for a while after the visit.
Why us
We plan around your planting before any solution is mixed, and we will say so if a wall cannot be treated without risk to what grows against it.
Fascias, soffits and the walls below can be treated in one visit, so the whole elevation finishes to a consistent tone.
Our base in Marlow is just down the valley, and we know how the woodland and tall hedges here affect a house.
Fully insured operatives carry out every job, and you are walked round the finished walls and roofline before we leave.

Questions
Shade and shelter. The valley is wooded, many homes have tall hedges and mature trees close by, and walls that rarely see sun stay damp after rain. Algae and mould establish wherever a surface stays wet, so the shaded side of a house turns first.
Sometimes. If the climber can be tied back or sheeted and the wall behind it reached, we can treat it with care. If the planting is too dense to protect properly, we will tell you rather than risk it.
Planting is sheeted, tied back or thoroughly wetted before application, depending on what it is and where it grows. The solution is applied in a controlled way around it, and plants are rinsed through once the wall has been cleaned.
Yes. Black streaking and green film on uPVC fascias, soffits and gutter faces come off with the right solution at low pressure. Under trees it is often worth doing the roofline in the same visit as the walls.
Not always. Much of it goes during the visit, but some treated growth continues to break down and lighten through ordinary weathering afterwards. We explain what to expect for your walls at the site visit.
No. Soft washing uses a solution at low pressure to act on the growth, rather than high mechanical force to strip it from the surface. That is much kinder to render, paint, mortar and uPVC.
