Gutter Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Marlow Bottom runs along a wooded valley north of Marlow, and many roofs spend much of the day in shade beneath mature trees. We clear gutters that fill in every season, flush the downpipes and wash the green off the roofline.

Under the canopy
Sun and wind dry out leaf litter, which stays loose and light enough to blow along. In shade the opposite happens. Debris stays damp, softens and settles into a dense, water-holding mat that clings to the bottom of the channel. On a roof that sits under trees for most of the day, that process runs almost all year.

A wooded valley
Marlow Bottom follows a valley running north from Marlow into the Chiltern Hills, with woodland along its sides and mature trees through many of its gardens. Much of the road sits in shade for a good part of the day, and roofs close to the trees take a steady fall of leaves, twigs, seed and catkins.
Most of the homes are established family houses, many of them detached, set among planting that has had decades to grow. Extensions, dormers and conservatories have been added to plenty of them over the years, which means more roof junctions and more short gutter runs, often tucked under the very trees that feed them.
Through the year
Autumn brings the largest single load, but it is far from the only one. In spring, trees drop bud cases, blossom and catkins; through summer come seeds, fine twigs and fragments of leaf; and moss on shaded roofs loosens whenever a dry spell is followed by rain. This finer material slips beneath the rim and settles under whatever is already in the gutter.
A run cleared in late autumn can be holding a fresh layer by early summer. For homes deep under the canopy, two visits a year often work better than one, timed to the trees above rather than to a date.
Roof junctions
Where two roof slopes meet in a valley, or an extension roof joins the main house, rain and loose moss are funnelled into a short length of gutter. That section fills faster than the rest of the run and is often the place where water comes over in a downpour, even when the gutter elsewhere looks fine.
Dormers do something similar on a smaller scale, shedding onto the slope below and down into the eaves. We plan the clear around the roof's shape, giving the most time to the points that take the heaviest share of water and debris.
Outside and inside
A green-streaked gutter face suggests overflow, and a clean one suggests all is well, but neither is reliable. Old stains remain after the blockage that caused them has gone, and a gutter can be packed full while its outer face looks spotless. What matters is inside: whether debris is holding water, whether the outlet is open and whether the downpipe takes the flow.
We check those first. Then, once the drainage is sorted, we wash the gutter faces, fascias and soffits so the roofline looks cared for and any future overflow shows clearly. Washing does not hide rot: soft or split timber is reported rather than washed and left.
Glass roofs
Conservatories catch leaves on the glass as well as in the gutter, and their gutters have shallow falls, so even a thin layer of debris leaves standing water. They also cannot be leaned on or used as a platform. Depending on the layout, we clear them with the vacuum from the ground or by hand from a safe position beside the glass, and the method for each one is settled at the site visit. Debris is collected rather than allowed to slide onto the panels.
Our process
Five stages, carried out in the same order on every roofline.
We walk round the property looking at the gutter runs, roof junctions, outlets and downpipes, and note splits, sagging lengths and dropped brackets before starting.
Leaves, seed and moss are drawn out with a pole-fed gutter vacuum from the ground where the run allows, starting with the sections fed by valleys and dormers.
Water is put through every outlet and down each pipe. We stay until it runs away freely, and if it does not, we tell you the restriction is lower down.
Gutter faces, fascias and soffits are washed of green and black streaking, and any loose bracket or parted joint is re-seated if it is a minor fix.
You are given a short, plain account of what we found, including soft timber, cracked sections or slipped tiles noticed at the eaves.
Honest limits
Clearing gives a gutter its full capacity back and shows whether the rest of the system is sound. It will not stop leaves landing tomorrow. In a valley this wooded, the realistic goal is a gutter kept clear on a sensible schedule rather than one that never needs attention again.
Cleaning also stops short of repair. Cracked sections, failed joints and runs without enough fall are reported for a gutter specialist.
Why choose us
We suggest an interval based on the trees above your roof and the amount that came out, not a fixed date for every house.
Gutter faces, fascias and soffits are washed of streaking once the drainage is clear, so any new overflow is easy to spot.
Everything removed goes into the vacuum and leaves the property with us, rather than landing on drives, paths or borders.
Fully insured operatives, with ladder use limited to the runs that genuinely need it and agreed at the site visit.
Around the valley
We also clear gutters in Marlow, Little Marlow, Lane End, Handy Cross and Bisham. Homes on higher, more open ground nearby usually fill more slowly than those deep in the valley, so their interval between visits tends to be longer.

Questions
Yes. Every outlet and downpipe is flushed after the channel is cleared, so we can see water leaving freely. A blockage further down, in a gully or underground drain, is noted for separate attention.
Yes. They are cleared with the vacuum from the ground or by hand from a safe position, depending on the layout, and nothing is leaned on or placed on the glass.
Yes. Once the gutters are clear, the outer gutter faces, fascias and soffits are washed of green and black streaking as part of the visit, leaving an even finish along the roofline.
Look for water coming over the front in rain, plants growing from the run, staining on the wall below a joint or a downpipe that stays dry in a downpour. Any of these suggests a restriction.
Yes, with care. Older cast iron is cleared gently, and rust, sagging lengths or failed joints are reported rather than disturbed. Sound sections are left exactly as they are.
Usually because of the trees. In shade, debris stays wet and compacts quickly, and trees shed something in almost every season. A mossy roof adds to it. Two clears a year often suit homes under heavy canopy.
They are drawn into the vacuum as they come out of the gutter and leave the property with us, so there is nothing to sweep up from the drive or borders afterwards.
