Driveway Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Marlow Bottom runs up a wooded valley north of Marlow, and many of its homes sit above or below the road on sloping plots. Shade, leaf fall and gradient shape how a drive here weathers, and how it should be cleaned.

First things
A level drive that turns green looks tired. A sloping one that turns green becomes a hazard, for feet in winter and for tyres pulling away. In a wooded valley that slick film of algae and moss builds up quickly, so on many drives here our first aim is a surface that is safer to use, and a cleaner look comes with it.

The valley
Marlow Bottom follows a long valley north of Marlow, with wooded slopes above it and a main road running along much of its length. Houses sit on either side, many set above or below the road, so a large share of drives climb up to the house or drop down towards it. For a good part of the day, much of the valley lies in shade.
Most homes are established family houses and detached properties, often surrounded by mature planting. Trees overhanging a frontage drop leaves, seed and twigs onto the drive through autumn, and in the shade beneath them that debris stays damp, breaks down and leaves a film that moss and algae thrive in. Tarmac, block paving and concrete are all common, along with garden paths and steps that see even less sun.
Gradients
Water on a sloping drive does not dry evenly. The upper section sheds rain quickly, while the lower part, and any dip at the foot of the slope, takes the run-off from above and stays wet for longer. Fine soil and leaf fragments travel down with it, so the bottom of the drive is usually where moss is thickest and the surface is slickest.
We read those patterns at the site visit and plan the clean from the top down, working the lower section more thoroughly and gathering what is loosened as we go. On block paving, the joints at the foot of a slope are often the most washed out, which makes refilling every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand after compaction especially worthwhile.
Tarmac
Tarmac is a common choice on the valley's sloping frontages, and moss, algae and organic growth are the usual reasons it needs attention. As tarmac ages, its binder weathers and the surface loses some depth of colour, while edges and patched areas can become softer.
We remove the growth with controlled cleaning, keeping the pressure to what the surface needs so loose aggregate is not dislodged. A clean tarmac drive looks much fresher, but cleaning does not bring back the deep black of newly laid material, and we say so before work starts. Where a surface is breaking up, resurfacing is a separate job.
Paths and steps
Paths and steps beside the house often sit in the most persistent shade of all, under trees or between buildings. They turn slippery well before they look dirty, and on a sloping plot they are frequently the way you reach the front door.
We can clean these alongside the driveway, matching the method to their material. Steps need slower, closer work than open paving, because their edges and risers hold growth that a broad pass across the surface would miss.
How we work
The order never changes. What does change from one drive to the next is the working direction, the pressure and where we spend the most time.
We identify the surface and look at the gradient, where water collects, the joints, edges and overhanging trees, then explain the method we recommend and what to expect from it.
Leaf litter, twigs and thick moss are lifted off first, so the clean that follows can work on the surface itself at the lowest effective pressure.
The drive is worked downhill in planned sections, with extra attention at the wetter foot of the slope and loosened debris gathered as it collects.
Dried block paving is compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, including the washed-out joints at the bottom.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes on last to help slow the return of moss and algae, and we explain how keeping leaves off the drive will help it last.
Be realistic
On a drive beneath mature trees, continuous leaf fall means growth will return sooner than on open ground. Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and here it is likely to sit nearer the shorter end. Keeping leaves off through autumn does more for the surface than cleaning more often.
Why us
We prioritise grip where it matters most, working hardest on the wet, slippery foot of a sloping drive and the steps beside it.
Pressure is kept to what an ageing tarmac surface can take, so the growth comes off without loosening the aggregate beneath it.
Block-paved drives are compacted and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, which resists washout better than kiln-dried sand.
Fully insured operatives, a method agreed at the site visit, and the finished drive walked through with you at the end.
Nearby
We also clean driveways in Marlow itself, in Little Marlow and Bisham, and up on the higher ground at Lane End and Handy Cross. Homes there share the same Chiltern tree cover, though few sit as deep in shade as the valley floor.

Questions
Yes. We plan the working direction around the gradient, clean from the top down and gather loosened debris as it collects at the bottom, so the slope is treated as part of the method rather than an obstacle.
Yes, in most cases. The slipperiness usually comes from algae and moss holding moisture on the surface. Removing them restores grip, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment helps slow their return, though leaves left lying will bring it back sooner.
No. Cleaning removes moss, algae and grime, and the drive will look noticeably fresher, but it cannot reverse the natural fading of ageing tarmac. We explain what to expect at the site visit.
Less time than on an open drive. Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and heavy shade with constant leaf fall puts a drive towards the shorter end. Sweeping leaves off through autumn makes a real difference.
Yes. Paths and steps in deep shade are often the most slippery surfaces on the property. We can clean them alongside the driveway, with the method chosen to suit their material.
Because water running down the slope carries jointing sand with it, and the lower joints lose the most. After cleaning and compaction we refill every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, which resists washout better than kiln-dried sand.
