Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
A small village between the river and open farmland, Little Marlow has a great deal of brick: house walls, garden walls, retaining walls and steps. We soft wash it at low pressure, so the growth goes and the joints stay.

Where we begin
Fired brick can take a lot, which is why it so often gets pressure washed. The mortar between the bricks is a different matter, and on an older or weathered wall it is usually the weakest part. Soft Wash Treatment cleans brick with a solution applied at low pressure and given time to act, then a gentle rinse, so the algae comes off and the pointing stays where it is.

The village
Little Marlow lies on low ground between Marlow and Bourne End, with the Thames to the south and farmland and open country around it. Homes on the edge of open fields collect more wind-blown seed, leaf litter and organic dust than those in a town, and that fine layer gives algae something to take hold in, particularly on lower walls and the faces of steps.
Village properties, countryside homes, riverside houses and family homes all appear within a small area, and brick is the common thread: house elevations, garden and retaining walls, entrance steps, piers and copings. Where gardens slope, there are often several retaining walls on one property, each facing a different way and weathering at its own rate.
Walls and steps
A retaining wall holds back damp soil on one side and usually faces a drive or path on the other, so it stays wet far longer than a house wall. Steps and their side walls collect leaves and organic dust in every corner. Both tend to turn dark and green well before the house behind them.
We treat these as part of the job rather than an afterthought. The solution is applied across the full face of the wall, including copings and piers, so the brick comes back to an even colour along its length instead of in patches.
Know the mark
Not every mark on brick is something growing. Algae, mould and lichen show as green, grey or black film. White, powdery or crystalline deposits are more often efflorescence, salts carried out of the masonry as it dries, and they are a different problem with a different cause.
We identify which we are looking at before choosing the treatment, taking account of the brick face, the mortar and any earlier coatings. That way the method suits the actual cause of the mark, and you know at the outset what to expect from each part of the wall.
Painted walls
Some older village homes have painted brick or painted render. A painted wall can be green because algae is growing on a healthy coating, or patchy because the paint itself is chalking and losing its grip. Those are not the same problem.
Sound paint can usually be soft washed with a good result. Where a coating is loose or flaking, cleaning cannot fix it, and redecoration may need to come first. We look closely at the paint before treating the wider elevation and tell you plainly what we find.
Down at ground level
The first stretch of wall above the ground catches splash from soil, gravel and paving and sits beside planting that slows the air. It often carries a denser band of growth than the wall above, and it sits right next to the borders, gravel and paving that also need protecting.
We plan the clean so loosened growth is rinsed away without being washed onto the patio or into the beds. Once the brick is clean, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to help slow how quickly algae comes back.
Our method
Brickwork, paintwork and planting are all checked before the solution is mixed, so the method fits the wall.
We identify the brick, mortar, any paint or render and the type of staining, separate growth from salts, and explain whether soft washing suits each wall.
Planting, lawns, gravel, glazing and painted details near the wall are protected or dampened before treatment, and run-off is planned away from beds and paving.
A solution suited to the surface is applied evenly across walls, piers, copings and steps, then given the dwell time needed to break down the algae and mould.
The brick is rinsed down without force at the joints, working into corners, steps and lower walls where growth tends to gather.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean brickwork. We go over the result with you, identify any loose pointing the clean has exposed and explain any weathering still to come.
Set expectations
A soft wash can make a significant difference to brick that has turned green or dark, and some treated growth may keep fading for a while after the visit. It cannot replace mortar, fix spalled bricks or cure damp coming through a wall. Chiltern EverGuard™ inhibits regrowth, typically for two to three years, depending on the surface and its environment, with retaining walls and shaded steps likely to sit at the shorter end.
Why us
Low pressure and a gentle rinse remove the growth without washing out mortar, which is the part of a brick wall most easily damaged.
We tell algae and mould apart from mineral salts before choosing a treatment, so the method answers the real cause of the mark.
We are based in Marlow, a short drive away, and know how damp ground and open fields affect brick around the village.
Fully insured technicians do the work, and we walk you along every wall and step we have treated before we pack away.
Nearby
We also carry out Soft Wash Treatment in the neighbouring places, including Marlow, Bourne End, Flackwell Heath, Wooburn Green and Cookham. Each has its own mix of brick, render and setting, and each house is assessed on its own walls.

Questions
Yes. Retaining walls stay damp from the soil behind them, so they often carry heavy growth. We treat the full face, including copings and piers, at low pressure and rinse gently so the mortar is not disturbed.
Not usually. White, powdery or crystalline marks are more often efflorescence, which is salt coming out of the masonry as it dries. We identify the mark at the site visit and explain how it differs from growth before agreeing a treatment.
Yes, in most cases. The green film on shaded steps is a large part of what makes them slippery, and removing it helps. Steps in deep shade will see growth return, so keeping leaves off them through autumn makes a real difference.
Low ground near the river holds moisture, and open fields nearby send seed, leaf litter and organic dust onto walls and steps. That combination gives algae both the damp and the foothold it needs, especially low down.
Yes, if the paint is sound. Flaking or chalking paint cannot be restored by cleaning and may come away further, so we check the coating first and tell you if redecoration should come before, or instead of, a clean.
Yes. Planting and lawns are protected or dampened before treatment and rinsed afterwards, and we plan the rinse so loosened growth does not end up on gravel, paving or in the beds.
