Sandstone Patio Cleaning, Marlow
Natural sandstone patio cleaning in Marlow — heavy moss, algae and early black spot removed, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™, plus a full gutter clean.
Patio Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Set among open fields and mature planting, Little Marlow gardens collect more leaf litter and wind-blown seed than most, and patios here darken from the edges inward. We clean the whole terrace, margins included, and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Our approach
Where paving meets a lawn, a border or a hedge, it gathers soil, clippings, seed and leaves, and those margins darken long before the centre does. A clean that leaves them dull leaves half the job undone. At a free site visit we identify the paving, look at what is reaching it from the garden and explain how we would bring the whole area back.

Village and countryside
Little Marlow is a small village between Marlow and Bourne End, with open countryside around it and the Thames close by. Gardens here tend to be established and well planted, and the surrounding fields add wind-blown seed, leaf litter and fine organic dust to whatever lands on the paving. That material gives moss and algae something to root into and leaves brown marks where wet leaves lie.
The properties range from village cottages and countryside homes to riverside residences and family houses on the edges of the village. Indian sandstone is common on garden terraces, alongside limestone, concrete and some newer porcelain. Each holds organic staining differently, which is why we begin by working out what the surface is.
Edges
The perimeter of a patio is where most of the garden's influence arrives. Soil washes out of beds after heavy rain, clippings gather along the lawn edge, and a hedge throws shade across the outer row of slabs.
These margins need careful work because they sit right against surfaces that should not be disturbed. We control the direction of water and loosened dirt so beds are not blasted out and slurry is not left in the grass. A bright centre framed by dark edges would not be a finished job.
Garden stains
Not every mark on a patio is growth. Wet leaves leave brown tannin stains, metal furniture can leave rust spots, and pots leave dark rings where moisture sat beneath them. These are assessed separately from the general algae because they come from different causes.
Some improve well with the main clean or a targeted treatment; others have soaked into porous stone and will fade rather than vanish. Identifying the mark first is what prevents repeated hard passes that damage the paving without removing the stain.
Indian sandstone
Sandstone is porous, so organic staining sits within its surface rather than on top of it. That is why a darkened sandstone terrace rarely responds to force: pressure takes the riven face off and leaves the stone rougher and quicker to soil again.
We clean it gently, treat black spot with a specialist application and allow the treatment time to work. The goal is the stone's own range of colours, not a single bleached tone. Heavily marked flags may need a second visit.
Joints
The material between the slabs varies from patio to patio, and it decides how the paving is approached, so we check it before we start. Weeds grow in the joints, so restoring the sand removes the place they root rather than only the plant itself.
Step by step
The sequence is the same for every patio; the pressure, treatment and dwell time inside each stage are set by what we found at the site visit.
We identify the paving, look at black spot and other marks, check the joints, steps and drainage, and explain the method we recommend, followed by a clear quotation.
Pots and furniture are moved as agreed, beds and lawn edges are protected, and loose leaves and soil are cleared before cleaning starts.
The terrace is cleaned at the lowest pressure that lifts dirt and algae from that material, with the margins worked as carefully as the centre.
Black spot receives a specialist application with time to act, and suitable garden stains are treated individually rather than forced.
Washed-out sand joints are refilled, Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean paving, and we explain how to keep leaves and debris from settling again.
Be realistic
Cleaning restores a surface; it does not rebuild one. We aim for a significant improvement and restore the original appearance where the condition allows, but some things belong to the paving itself.
Why us
Margins, steps and borders are cleaned with the same care as the open paving, so the result looks finished from every side.
Tannin, rust and pot marks are diagnosed before treatment, so each gets the approach that suits it rather than more pressure.
Beds, lawns, glazing and painted doors near the paving are protected, and the rinse water is kept where it belongs.
Fully insured technicians travel from our base in neighbouring Marlow and walk you through the finished terrace before they leave.

Questions
In most cases, yes. Sandstone holds organic staining within its surface, so it needs treatment with time to work rather than force. Pressure strips the riven face and leaves the stone rougher. We will tell you at the site visit how far yours is likely to come back.
Often, yes. Many tannin marks improve well with the right treatment. How far depends on how long the leaves lay there and how porous the paving is; long-standing marks on sandstone may fade rather than disappear.
No. Both are natural stone, but limestone is usually softer and paler, so it is cleaned more slowly at lower pressure. The method and treatment are chosen for the individual stone and its condition.
No, not when it is planned properly. Beds and lawn edges are protected before we start, loosened soil and rinse water are directed away from them, and any treatment is applied to the paving rather than the planting.
Fields and mature planting nearby send more seed, leaf litter and organic dust onto the paving than a town garden receives. That material holds moisture and feeds moss and algae, so growth returns sooner unless it is swept away regularly.
It is applied to the patio once it is clean, working into the material to target the growth that cleaning leaves behind. It helps reduce how quickly moss, algae and black spot return. Chiltern EverGuard™ inhibits regrowth, typically for two to three years, depending on the surface and its environment.
Clear leaves and debris before they sit for long, keep drainage points free, and move pots occasionally so the slabs beneath them can dry. Anything that helps shaded paving dry out faster makes it less welcoming to algae.
