Slate Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Marlow
Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Little Marlow lies on open, low ground between the Chiltern slopes and the Thames, where river mist lingers and seed blows in off the fields. We lift the moss by hand, clean slate and tile with care and treat afterwards.

Open ground
Unlike the wooded valleys nearby, much of the land around the village is open meadow and farmland. Roofs here get more sun, yet the low ground holds mist from the river, and the wind carries seed, pollen and fine soil onto the tiles, where moss and lichen find a foothold. We assess all of that at a free site visit.

Little Marlow roofs
Little Marlow sits on low ground north of the Thames, between Marlow and Bourne End, with meadows and lakes between the village and the river and the Chiltern slopes rising behind. Cold, damp air drains down onto this flat land on still nights, and mist can sit over it well into the morning, so even roofs that catch full sun later begin the day wet.
The village is small, with older cottages and houses around its centre and a scattering of barns, farm buildings and larger homes on its edges. Many of the older roofs are clay tile or natural slate, often with a chimney or two, while later infill and extensions bring concrete tiles. Open to the fields on several sides, these roofs collect more airborne organic material than most in town.
Airborne debris
Open country is not as clean for a roof as it looks. Wind lifts seed, pollen, leaf fragments and fine soil off the surrounding land and deposits them in the texture of tiles and along the overlaps. That thin layer holds moisture and gives moss spores something to root into, even on a roof with no trees above it.
Lichen does well here too. It tolerates sun and wind better than moss and spreads slowly across open, exposed pitches in grey, white and yellow patches. On many roofs in the village we expect to find both: moss on the shaded or north-facing side and lichen across the open one.
Natural slate
Slate is hard and durable, but each one is thin, held by its own fixings and easily cracked by a misplaced foot or a ladder leaning on it. After many years, nails can corrode and slates slip. We look at the slates and their fixings closely before anything is agreed, using a drone where the roof cannot be seen properly from below.
Cleaning is done from access equipment positioned beside the roof, never by walking on it. Moss is lifted from the laps by hand and the surface is cleaned with gentle, controlled water, working down the roof so that nothing is driven up beneath the overlaps.
Clay tiles
Older clay tiles vary from one to the next in colour, texture and strength. Some keep a firm fired face; others have softened at the edges with age. Over a long life, odd tiles will have been replaced with ones that never quite matched.
Our aim on a clay roof is to remove the moss, algae and lichen while leaving that natural variation intact. That means the gentlest method that works, often a soft wash after hand removal, and accepting that a few dead lichen marks may take a while to weather off after treatment rather than scrubbing at them.
Treatment
Once cleaning is complete, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to the roof in settled, frost-free conditions. It reaches into the material to target the spores and remains of growth that cleaning leaves behind, and it helps slow how quickly fresh growth takes hold as new material blows in.
Chiltern EverGuard™ inhibits regrowth, typically for two to three years, depending on the surface and its environment. Where a roof falls in that range depends on its covering, how damp the site stays, its exposure to airborne debris and how it is maintained. As it draws to a close, we can look at the roof again and advise.
From visit to handover
The method inside each step is decided by what we find, from the covering and its fixings to the access around the house.
We view the roof from the ground and, where it helps, by drone, checking the covering, its fixings and the growth on each pitch, and showing you the images as we go.
A clear quotation sets out the method we suggest, the reasons for it and a defined statement of works, so nothing about the job is left vague.
Once a date is secured, you hear in advance who will be carrying out the work and what the day will involve, with the chance to ask questions.
Moss is lifted by hand from suitable access, the roof is cleaned gently to suit slate or tile, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment follows when the weather is right.
Moss that came down is cleared from the gutters, the downpipes are checked and the project lead explains what was done and what to expect next.
Honest limits
A cleaned roof looks significantly better, and we aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows. Some things will remain, and we explain them at the site visit.
Why us
Our base is just along the valley, so the conditions on this low, open ground are ones we understand well.
No foot traffic on the roof, fixings checked before work begins and a gentle method set for the condition of the slates.
Moss that comes off during the clean is taken out of the gutters and the downpipes are checked, so the roof drains properly afterwards.
Fully insured technicians, suitable access equipment and a project lead who walks you through the result at handover.
Nearby
We also clean roofs in the neighbouring places along this stretch of the valley, including Marlow, Marlow Bottom, Bourne End, Bisham and Medmenham, and up at Flackwell Heath on the higher ground.

Questions
Wind brings seed, pollen and fine soil in from the surrounding fields and leaves it in the texture of the tiles and along the laps. That layer holds moisture, especially with river mist on low ground, and moss spores root into it without needing shade from trees.
Yes. Technicians work from access equipment and poles positioned beside the roof, so no weight goes on the slates. We check the slates and their fixings first, and a roof with failing fixings is referred to a roofer before any cleaning.
They are almost always lichen. It grows slowly, copes well with sun and wind, and fixes itself firmly to the surface. Rather than being scraped off, it is treated and left to break down, so the marks fade over time.
No. We use the gentlest method that works and aim to keep the natural colour variation of older clay. Moss and staining come off; the tile's own weathering and any differences between original and replacement tiles remain.
It inhibits regrowth, typically for two to three years, depending on the surface and its environment. In an exposed spot that collects a lot of airborne debris, or on damp low ground, expect the shorter end; a drier roof with less debris blowing onto it may hold out longer.
Yes. Hand removal and cleaning can go ahead for much of the year. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment needs settled weather without frost, so in a cold spell we may come back to apply it separately.
Most of it is lifted by hand and collected as we go, and anything that falls towards the eaves is cleared out of the gutters before we finish. The downpipes are checked too, so the roof drains properly afterwards.
