Slate Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Marlow
Slate roof moss removal and cleaning in Marlow: a drone survey, scaffold access, carefully controlled low-pressure cleaning and Chiltern EverGuard™.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Many homes here have been extended over the years, leaving roofs of hips, valleys, dormers and lower lean-tos close to the damp of the Thames. We plan the work around that shape, remove moss by hand and clean each part gently.

Roof shape
Two houses can share the same concrete tile and still need quite different work. Hips, valleys, dormers and lower extensions break a roof into sheltered pockets where moisture and debris linger, and each one changes how it can be reached. We look at the whole structure at a free site visit before suggesting a method.

Bourne End roofs
Bourne End grew up where the River Wye meets the Thames, and much of the village lies on low ground close to the water. Damp air off the river and the mature trees along its banks keep riverside elevations wet for longer, so the pitch facing the water is often the one carrying the most moss and algae.
Much of the housing dates from the twentieth century onwards, with older character properties near the river and newer developments towards the edges of the village. Over the decades many houses have been extended, with rear additions, dormer loft rooms, garages and conservatories, so roofs are rarely a single simple slope. Concrete tiles dominate on later homes, with clay and slate on older ones.
Complex roofs
Where a roof changes direction, conditions change with it. A valley between two slopes collects run-off and leaf litter, a dormer shades the tiles beside it, and a low lean-to under a taller wall can sit in shade for most of the day. It is common to find heavy moss on one section and almost none on the next.
We map those differences at the site visit and plan the work section by section. The access for a tall main roof is not the same as for a single-storey extension or a roof over a conservatory, and working from the right position on each is what keeps the pressure low.
Concrete tiles
Concrete tiles leave the factory with a coloured surface finish that wears away over decades of rain and frost. Moss and algae make that ageing look worse than it is, and removing them makes a large difference. What cleaning cannot do is put back colour that has weathered off, and repeated passes with more pressure in pursuit of it would only roughen the tile.
So the aim is a clean, sound, naturally weathered roof. Moss is lifted by hand, the surface is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure, and we tell you beforehand what finish the condition of your tiles makes realistic.
Solar arrays
Panels change how a roof is cleaned. They limit access to the tiles beneath and beside them, and the gap below an array can trap moss and leaves that are hard to see from the garden. We plan the work around the installation, keeping cleaning water and treatment off the glass and taking care not to disturb cabling or mounting rails.
Panel glass is a different material from roof tile and is never cleaned with the same method. If the panels need attention as well, that is assessed separately.
Protection
Every cleaned roof is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, applied once the surface is clean and the weather is settled and frost-free. It targets spores and residual growth left in the texture of the tiles and helps reduce how quickly moss and algae come back.
On the river side of a house, or in a valley shaded by a dormer, growth will usually return sooner than on an open, south-facing slope. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months depending on location, exposure, covering and maintenance.
Step by step
The order of work never changes. What changes is how each section of the roof is reached and cleaned, which is settled at the site visit.
We walk round the house and, where useful, fly a drone to see valleys, dormers and the space behind solar panels, sharing the live images with you.
You receive our recommended method for each part of the roof, the access we will use and a clear quotation with a defined statement of works.
Working close to the surface from suitable equipment, without walking on the roof, operatives lift the moss by hand, starting with the heaviest growth in valleys and sheltered corners.
Each section is cleaned at the pressure agreed for its covering. The treatment then follows across the whole roof in settled, frost-free conditions.
Moss is cleared from every gutter run, including those on lower roofs, and the downpipes are checked. The project lead then explains the work and the aftercare.
Before you book
Cleaning makes a significant difference to how a roof looks and removes the growth that holds water against it. It does not repair the roof, and it will not hide its age.
Why us
Each section of the roof is assessed for access and growth, so a lean-to is not cleaned in the same way as the main roof.
Operatives work from access equipment and poles beside the roof rather than standing on it, which protects older tiles and slate.
Upper and lower gutter runs are cleared of the moss that comes down, and the downpipes are checked before we leave.
Work carried out by fully insured operatives, with a project lead who explains what was done and what to expect afterwards.

From here we also clean roofs in Wooburn Green and Wooburn Moor up the Wye valley, in Hedsor and Flackwell Heath, and across the river towards Cookham. The mix of riverside damp and mature trees is much the same.

Questions
Yes, subject to its condition and access. Each section is assessed separately, because valleys, dormers and lower roofs often carry different amounts of growth and need different working positions to clean them with control.
Damp air off the Thames and the trees along the bank keep that side wet for longer after rain and mist. Moss and algae need moisture before anything else, so the elevation that dries slowest is usually the one that greens first.
Not entirely. Cleaning removes the moss, algae and grime that darken the roof, and the improvement is usually significant. Colour that has weathered off the tile surface over decades cannot be put back by cleaning.
Yes, where access allows. We plan the work around the array, keep cleaning water and treatment off the panels and take care around the mounting rails. The glass itself needs a different method and is assessed separately.
No. The bulk of the moss is lifted by hand first, then the roof is cleaned at the lowest pressure that achieves the result on that covering, or soft washed. High pressure can damage tile surfaces and drive water under the laps.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months. A shaded roof near the water will usually sit nearer the shorter end of that range, and an open, sunny one nearer the longer end.
Yes. Moss coming off a main roof often lands on lower roofs and in their gutters, so every run that receives debris is cleared and the downpipes are checked before handover.
