Brick Cleaning and Soft Washing in Beaconsfield
Brick cleaning and soft washing in Beaconsfield: black algae and lichen treated on brick retaining walls and copings, then rinsed at low pressure.
Soft Wash Treatment · Buckinghamshire
Chesham climbs the sides of the Chess valley, and walls down on the damp valley floor tend to green faster than those higher up. We read where the growth sits on each house, then treat it at low pressure.

The approach
A green film rarely covers a house evenly. It gathers where water lingers: behind a downpipe, below a sill, along a shaded return or across the bottom of a wall beside a border. Soft Wash Treatment works on that growth with a solution applied at low pressure and given time to act, and the first job at any free site visit is to work out exactly where it is.

Chesham homes
The town grew along the valley of the River Chess, a chalk stream, and its streets climb the slopes on either side. Lower ground near the river holds damp air and loses the sun earlier, so render and brick there can stay wet for much of the day. A similar house a little higher up the hill often dries far sooner and stays cleaner.
The housing is just as varied. Victorian brick terraces, older cottages with flint or lime-pointed walls, inter-war and post-war family homes and later developments with rendered or painted elevations all sit within a short distance of each other. Many have extensions, garages and side passages added over the decades, each weathering at its own pace.
Reading the pattern
Most people notice one conspicuous wall. Once we walk round the house, lighter growth often turns up as well: under the eaves, behind pipes, around vents, or on the side of a garage that nobody looks at from the road.
Treating only the worst patch can leave a hard edge between clean and stained finish. We agree sensible boundaries before work starts, usually a whole elevation or a logical section of one, so the result looks deliberate rather than spot-cleaned. That does not mean treating walls that do not need it; it means deciding where the clean should stop.
Near the ground
The lowest part of an exterior wall gets rain splashing up from paving and soil, sits beside planting and sees slower air movement than the storey above. It often carries a dense band of green growth and grime even when the upper wall looks fair.
Because that band sits right next to lawns, beds and paths, it needs the most careful preparation. We protect what is below, apply the solution in a controlled way and rinse so that loosened growth leaves the wall without simply landing on a freshly cleaned patio or in a flower bed.
Extensions and returns
An extension built decades after the main house may face a different way, stand nearer a boundary or carry a different render. A narrow side passage between two houses gets little sun and less breeze, and stays damp long after the front has dried.
We assess these parts individually and decide with you whether they are treated with the main elevation or as separate areas, so the method stays proportionate to the actual condition.
Older masonry
On Victorian brick and on older flint or lime-pointed walls, the mortar is softer than the masonry around it. A pressure lance aimed at a green brick face will often take the pointing with it.
Soft washing avoids that, because the solution does the cleaning and the rinse is gentle. Joints that are already loose or crumbling are noted and shown to you, since cleaning cannot replace mortar. Once the wall is clean, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to help reduce how quickly growth returns.
How a visit runs
Nothing is applied until we know what the wall is made of and what is growing on it.
We tell render, painted masonry, brick, flint and cladding apart, check their condition, and confirm whether the marks are biological growth that soft washing suits or something that needs another approach.
Windows, doors, vents, planting and lawns are protected or dampened before treatment, and we plan where rinse water will run so it is controlled from the start.
A suitable solution goes on at low pressure and is left for the contact time it needs to work on algae, mould and lichen across the agreed area.
The elevation is rinsed down gently, with extra attention to the lower wall, corners and openings, and surrounding plants are rinsed through as well.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied once the surface is clean. We then review each elevation with you, point out any defects that are now visible and explain how the wall should weather from here.
Realistic results
A treated wall usually looks markedly cleaner on the day, and some residual growth can continue to fade as it weathers afterwards. What cleaning cannot do is repair the fabric of the building. Algae often disguises small defects, so a cleaner wall can make them easier to see; the clean did not cause them.
Why us
We look at where growth sits and why, so the treated area is planned around the house rather than around the most obvious stain.
Low pressure and a gentle rinse mean lime pointing and older brick are cleaned without the joints being washed out.
Where a crack, failed coating or loose joint shows up, we tell you plainly and do not present cleaning as the fix.
All work is carried out by fully insured operatives, with access to higher walls agreed at the site visit rather than improvised on the day.
Around the town
We also work in the villages and hamlets around the town, including Chesham Bois, Ashley Green, Chartridge, Bellingdon, Botley and Ley Hill. Most stand higher and more exposed than the valley floor, which changes how walls weather more than it changes the method.

Questions
Low ground beside a river holds damp air and gets less direct sun, so walls there dry slowly after rain. Algae and mould establish where moisture lingers, which is why a wall on the valley floor often greens faster than one further up the slope.
Yes, once we have checked the mortar. Older lime pointing is softer than the brick or flint it holds, so the method keeps pressure low and the rinse gentle. Areas of loose or missing pointing are identified first and shown to you.
Only if that gives a sensible result. Cleaning a single patch can leave a sharp line against the surrounding finish, so we usually suggest treating the whole affected elevation or a natural section of it, and agree the boundary with you first.
Often, yes. Walls above a flat roof or a lower extension are looked at during the site visit, and the safe access and treatment plan are agreed before any work is booked.
Usually most of it. Some treated growth can continue to lighten as it weathers after the visit, and marks that are not biological, such as rust or mineral deposits, may need another approach. We explain which is which beforehand.
No. It removes growth from a sound surface but does not repair cracked render, repoint masonry or restore paint that has lost its grip. A cleaner wall can make those defects easier to see, and we will point them out.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment applied after the clean typically protects for between 12 and 24 months. Walls on shaded, low-lying ground or beside dense planting will usually sit towards the shorter end, and more open walls towards the longer.
