Solar Panel Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Chesham fills the valley of the River Chess, with streets climbing the steep sides around it. Arrays here often sit above sloping gardens or terraced rows, so working out a safe reach comes first. Then we clean with pure water.

First things first
The cleaning itself is simple: de-ionised water, a soft brush and patience with anything stubborn. What varies from house to house is where the operator can stand. A pole is only as good as the control behind it, and on sloping plots that control depends on level ground, a clear line to the panels and room to move.

The Chess valley
Chesham sits low in the valley of the River Chess, a chalk stream, with roads climbing steeply up both sides towards the higher ground around Chesham Bois, Botley and Ley Hill. Many houses are built into the slope, so a front door can be at street level while the back garden falls away or rises sharply behind.
The housing is just as varied. Rows of Victorian brick terraces sit close to the centre, with inter-war and post-war homes and newer developments further up the valley sides. Terraces rarely have side access, rear extensions are common, and on low ground near the river roofs stay damp for longer, which suits the moss that gathers along panel frames.
Sloping gardens
A water-fed pole is used from the ground, but the ground has to suit it. On a plot that drops away steeply, the operator may be standing well below the gutter line, which adds height to the reach and changes the angle at which the brush meets the glass. On a garden that rises behind the house, the opposite can happen and a high array becomes easier to reach.
Steps, retaining walls, terraced beds and greenhouses all affect where a stable working position is. We walk the plot at the site visit, decide where the pole will be controlled from, and tell you plainly if part of an array cannot be reached that way.
Terraced rows
On a terraced street the array is often on the rear slope, and the only way to the back garden may be through the house. That is workable, but it needs agreeing beforehand: the hose that carries the de-ionised water has to run through cleanly, and floors are protected where it does. Where a neighbour's garden is the only line of sight to the panels, we discuss that with you before the day rather than assume.
Rear extensions under the array are another common feature. They can put the panels further from the nearest standing point than they look from the garden.
On the glass
What builds up on arrays here is much the same as anywhere in the Chilterns, with a little more of it lower down. Valley-floor roofs dry slowly and gather moss along the bottom frame, garden trees add spring pollen and sticky residue, and birds leave droppings that dry hard onto the glass.
Each is treated a little differently. Pollen film comes away with steady brushing, droppings are soaked and softened before the brush goes near them, and moss is lifted out of the lower corners where frame meets glass. All of it is rinsed off with de-ionised water and left to dry.
The clean, step by step
Access is decided first because everything else depends on it. After that the work follows the same sequence on every roof.
At the free site visit we look at the array, the pitch and the ground below it, including slopes, steps, extensions and the route to the back garden.
Where the hose and pole need to pass through the house or a side passage, we agree how with you, and protect floors and paths before work starts.
De-ionised water fed through a soft-bristle brush on the pole loosens pollen, dust and droppings, with stubborn marks soaked and gone over again rather than scraped.
Moss and debris gathered along the lower frame and the accessible edges are cleared, so the run-off has a clean path off each panel.
The array is rinsed, left to dry naturally with nothing wiped across it, and checked. Anything we spotted around the fixings or seals is mentioned to you.
Before you book
A clean leaves the glass and accessible frames clear of what has built up on them. It is surface work, so the effect on generation depends on the array, its orientation and the season, and we do not attach a number to it.
Why us
Sloping plots and terraced rows are assessed properly at the site visit, so the method is settled before anyone arrives with equipment.
No detergents or chemicals, so nothing is left on the glass and nothing drains into your garden, the gutters or the ground.
Nobody stands or kneels on the panels. The glass, frames and seals are touched only by a soft brush and water.
We are fully insured and based in Marlow, and we tell you what we noticed about the array as well as what we cleaned.
Around the valley
We also clean solar panels in Chesham Bois, Ashley Green, Chartridge, Bellingdon, Ley Hill and Botley. Many of those homes sit higher and more exposed than the town in the valley below, which changes what lands on the glass more than how we clean it.

Questions
Usually, yes. It depends on finding a level, stable position within reach of the array. We check slopes, steps and retaining walls at the site visit and explain if part of the array cannot be cleaned safely from the ground.
Sometimes. If the back garden can only be reached through the house, the hose has to pass through too. We agree the route with you beforehand and protect the floors wherever it runs.
Low ground near the river holds damp air and gets less sun, so roofs dry slowly. Moss takes hold where the frame meets the glass and run-off slows, and we clear that line as part of the clean.
No. The panels are washed and rinsed with de-ionised water alone, which has had its minerals removed. That lets the glass dry clear without spotting and keeps detergents off the roof and out of the garden.
Once a year suits most. A second clean can help where panels sit near trees or farmland, or at a shallow angle that holds dirt. Condition matters more than the calendar, so we suggest an interval after the first visit.
Not by a figure we can promise. Cleaning removes material that shades the glass, but generation also depends on orientation, season, weather and the system's condition, so the effect differs from one array to the next.
No. Our work is cleaning the glass and accessible frames. Any electrical or performance concern belongs with a qualified solar installer, although we will mention anything visible that looks out of place.
