Solar Panel Cleaning · 14 towns
Buckinghamshire panels sit under beech woods, on steep Chiltern roofs and beside open fields in the Vale. We clean them with de-ionised water and soft brushes on a water-fed pole, worked from the ground, with no chemicals.

Solar care from our Marlow base
Buckinghamshire is not one landscape. The south is wooded Chiltern country, cut by steep valleys and bordered by the Thames; the north opens out into the farmland of the Vale of Aylesbury. An array in a beech-lined valley and one on a roof beside open fields get dirty in different ways, so we look at the setting before deciding how to clean the glass.
Tree cover
Much of southern Buckinghamshire lies inside the Chilterns National Landscape, and a great deal of it is wooded. Beech, oak and mature garden trees overhang roofs in the valleys, and what they drop is most of what we clean off: leaf fragments, sticky sap, blossom and a film of pollen that rain smears rather than shifts.
Woodland also means birds. Droppings collect below favourite perches on ridge tiles, chimneys and aerials, and they set hard on warm glass. Shade adds the last problem. A panel that sits in shadow for half the day dries slowly, and moss starts along the bottom frame where water and debris gather, so we clear that edge as well as the faces.
Roofs and slopes
Older Chiltern houses tend to have steep roofs of handmade clay tile, often brittle with age, and nobody should be walking across them to reach an array. A water-fed pole lets us work from the garden or the drive, so the tiles and the panels are left untouched.
The hills add their own question. On a sloping plot the ground beneath an array may sit well above or below the level of the eaves, which changes how far the pole has to reach and where it can stand safely. We check that at the site visit, and if an array genuinely cannot be reached from the ground we tell you then rather than improvise on the day.
The north of the county
North of the escarpment the land flattens into the Vale of Aylesbury, with wide arable fields and far fewer trees. Panels there collect less leaf litter and more fine soil carried on the wind, especially when fields are being worked or harvested. That dust mixes with dew into a dull film that a light shower will not clear.
Fourteen places we cover
Each town below has its own page describing how its setting affects the panels on its roofs. These notes give a quick sense of each place.

Our home town, where Thames damp and mature gardens leave arrays slow to dry and moss creeping along the bottom frames of older and newer roofs alike.

The county town sits out in the open Vale, where arrays on estate roofs gather fine dust carried across flat farmland rather than woodland debris.

High on the ridge among commons and old hedgerows, arrays in Penn catch pollen and leaf blown in from every side of the village.

Wide, tree-lined roads and spacious gardens bring heavy autumn leaf fall onto roof arrays, with bird droppings concentrated beneath favourite perches.

A steep valley town, so arrays on hillside streets are often reached from a sloping garden, while woodland edges add sap and leaf.

Below the escarpment, panels on the shaded side dry slowly, while those facing the open Vale take more wind-blown dust from the fields.

Low ground along the River Chess holds damp air, so panels on valley-bottom homes grow edge moss sooner than those on the surrounding hills.

A valley village under beech-clad slopes, where leaf litter and long shade keep the lower frames of an array damp well after rain.

Riverside homes and tree-lined roads give arrays here a mix of river damp, busy birdlife and pollen from long-established gardens.

Village homes between open fields and the river, so farm dust and spring blossom both find their way onto the glass.

A wooded valley whose roads run in shade for much of the day, leaving panels with leaf debris and grime that is slow to dry.

Thames-side and hillside homes where mature trees and damp air keep panel frames and lower edges wet for longer than on open ground.

The method never changes; where the pole stands and what we find on the glass do.
At the site visit we note what overhangs the array, which way it faces, how steep the roof is and where a pole can safely stand on the plot below.
De-ionised water fed through a soft brush lifts sap, pollen and droppings from the glass. The work is done from the ground wherever access allows, so nobody stands on the array.
Moss and leaf debris packed along the bottom frame are cleared, because that is where water lingers on a shaded Chiltern roof and where growth returns first.
A final rinse of de-ionised water leaves no residue, so the glass dries on its own with no towels, squeegees or detergent drawn across it.
Before leaving we look over the whole array and tell you about anything we saw, such as a loose fixing, a tired seal or signs of birds nesting beneath the panels.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
Our base is in the south of the county, so the Chiltern valleys, the Thames villages and the Vale towns all sit within our working area.
No detergents, no chemicals and no high pressure on the glass, so nothing but water runs off into your garden, pond or borders.
Every visit is carried out by a fully insured team, with access planned at the site visit rather than worked out on the morning.
Cleaning removes what shades the glass. We do not put a figure on the difference it makes, because that depends on the array and its setting.

Questions
Once a year is usually enough. Twice a year makes sense where an array sits under trees, near farmland or at a low angle that holds dirt, which in a wooded county with plenty of open fields describes a fair number of roofs.
Usually, yes. The pole works from the ground, so the pitch of the roof matters less than the space beneath it. Where a sloping garden or a conservatory gets in the way, we work out the access at the site visit.
Yes. Arrays on stables, barns, garages and garden offices are cleaned the same way, with de-ionised water and a soft brush. They often sit lower and closer to trees or fields, so they can need attention more often than the house roof.
No. Rain moves loose dust, but it leaves bird droppings, sap and pollen film behind, and on a shaded roof it carries debris down to the bottom frame, where moss then takes hold.
Because it is not needed and it leaves a residue. De-ionised water has had its minerals removed, so it lifts dirt and dries without spotting, and nothing but water runs off the roof into the garden.
