Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Great Missenden
Roof cleaning in Great Missenden — moss and lichen removed from a concrete tile roof from powered access at low pressure, plus Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Roof Cleaning · Buckinghamshire
Aylesbury sits out in the open vale rather than among the wooded hills, so its roofs go green for different reasons. We look at aspect, age and covering, lift the moss by hand and clean at the lowest effective pressure.

Where we begin
In the Chiltern valleys, tree shade explains most of the moss on a roof. Around Aylesbury the picture is wider: which way a slope faces, how exposed it is, what it is made of and how long it has been up there. A free site visit, often with a drone, lets us show you what is growing and why.

Aylesbury roofs
Buckinghamshire's county town lies in the Vale of Aylesbury, on lower, flatter ground north of the Chiltern escarpment. Its historic core and the streets around it, Walton among them, have older brick and rendered houses, many under natural slate. Beyond them come the twentieth-century suburbs, and then large newer developments such as Fairford Leys and Watermead.
That spread means a roof here might be well over a century old or barely past its first few winters. Open ground lets roofs dry in the wind, yet north-facing pitches still stay damp, and homes beside open water or mature planting tend to collect growth sooner. The covering and its age decide how the roof should be cleaned.
On open ground
Spores travel on the wind, and an open setting does not stop them landing. What decides whether they take hold is moisture. A slope facing north, or one shaded by a neighbouring house, may stay damp for hours after the south side has dried, and that is where algae shows first as a dark film or streaks.
Lichen copes well with exposure and often appears on roofs that carry little moss at all, settling as pale crusts on ridge tiles and on the faces of the tiles themselves. Because it roots into the surface rather than sitting on it, it needs treatment as well as cleaning.
Newer estates
Owners on recent developments are sometimes surprised to see moss on a roof that is not very old. Profiled concrete tiles have a textured face that holds moisture from the start, and the gaps between them catch debris that growth can root into.
Catching it early makes the work simpler, because thin growth comes away more easily than mature cushions. Many newer roofs also use dry-fix ridges and verges, with plastic and fabric components in place of mortar. We keep the spray off those parts and check they are secure before and after cleaning.
Older streets
Slate is dense and sheds water well, but it is thin, and on older roofs the nails holding it can have corroded. Walking on it risks cracking slates or dislodging them, so we work from towers, platforms or poles and never stand on the roof.
Moss on slate tends to gather along the lower edge of each slate and in the joints, where water lingers. We lift it by hand, then clean with close control at low pressure. Any slipped or cracked slates we find are noted in your report, because they are a job for a roofer rather than something cleaning can fix.
After cleaning
With the roof clean, we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as standard. It penetrates the surface and works on the spores and residual growth that cleaning cannot always reach, reducing how quickly the roof greens over again.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on aspect, exposure, surface and how the roof is maintained. It is applied only in settled, frost-free weather. When the period is nearly over we send an email offering a free assessment, so you can decide whether a further treatment is worthwhile.
From visit to finish
Each roof follows the same five stages. The access, method and pressure inside them come from what we found at the site visit.
We assess the roof from the ground and, where appropriate, by drone, sharing the live images with you. We note the covering, its condition, the growth and the safest access.
You receive our recommendation in writing with a clear quotation and a defined statement of works, so you can see what is included and why that method was chosen.
Once you accept, a deposit secures the date. We offer our next available slot first, and if that does not suit we agree another one with you.
Operatives work close to the surface from access equipment, lift the moss by hand, then clean at the agreed pressure, without walking on the tiles or slates.
Chiltern EverGuard™ goes on in suitable weather, the gutters are cleared of moss, and the project lead explains what was done and the aftercare we recommend.
Realistic results
A cleaned roof looks considerably better and is easier to inspect. We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows, and explain at the visit where it may not.
Why Chiltern Surface Co
We have cleaned roofs in Aylesbury, so the mix of older slate and newer concrete tile here is familiar to us.
Slate, clay and concrete are each cleaned in the way that suits them, with the lowest effective pressure decided before work starts.
Anything we see that needs a roofer goes into your report, so you know about it rather than finding out later.
Our team is fully insured and works from proper access equipment, keeping off the roof surface from start to finish.
Around Aylesbury
We also clean roofs in the villages around the town, including Stoke Mandeville, Weston Turville, Aston Clinton, Bierton, Stone and Hartwell. Their housing ranges from older cottages to recent estates, so we assess each roof on its own merits.

Questions
Yes. We have carried out roof cleaning in the town, and we cover the surrounding villages too. Every roof still starts with its own site visit, because the covering, age and setting vary so much from one street to the next.
Yes, it can. Concrete tiles hold moisture from the day they are laid, and a north-facing slope can show moss or algae within a short time. Thin early growth is quicker to remove than established cushions, so it is worth having it looked at.
Usually algae. It forms a dark film on surfaces that stay damp, and rain draws it down the slope into streaks. It is a living growth rather than dirt, so it needs cleaning followed by treatment, otherwise it returns to the same places quickly.
Not usually. Most roofs can be reached from access towers, mobile platforms or telescopic poles, which put the operative close to the surface without anyone standing on the roof. We confirm the access at the site visit and include it in the quotation.
The roof. Moss coming off the tiles falls into the gutters, so we clean the roof first and then clear the gutters and check the downpipes before leaving. Doing it the other way round would mean clearing them twice.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment typically protects for between 12 and 24 months. An exposed, sunny roof tends to stay clear for longer than a shaded north slope. We email near the end of that period to offer a free reassessment.
