Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Henley-on-Thames
Roof moss removal in Henley-on-Thames from powered access: low-pressure cleaning, gutters cleared and Chiltern EverGuard™ protection on a concrete tile roof.
Roof Cleaning · 8 towns
Our Oxfordshire work follows the Thames upstream from Henley-on-Thames towards Oxford and runs along the foot of the Chiltern scarp. Clay tile, slate and stone-built houses sit side by side here, and every roof is surveyed before anything is cleaned.

The part of the county we serve
Two features shape the corner of Oxfordshire we work in. The Thames winds through it, from the city past Wallingford and through the Goring Gap down to Henley-on-Thames, and the wooded Chiltern escarpment rises along its eastern side. Between them sit old market towns and fast-growing new neighbourhoods, and their roofs carry centuries of different materials. We read each one before deciding how it should be cleaned.
The river corridor
For much of its course through the county the Thames crosses a broad, flat floodplain with water meadows on either side. On still autumn and winter mornings mist forms over that low ground and drifts into the streets nearest the river, wetting roofs that may not dry until the afternoon. Where the valley narrows between wooded hills at Goring, shade is added to the damp.
The same pattern repeats on a smaller scale along the tributaries, the Thame and the Cherwell among them. Elevations that face the water or the meadows beyond it usually carry heavier algae and moss than slopes facing the town, and gutters on those sides fill faster with the growth that washes down.
Building materials
Oxfordshire straddles two building traditions. In the Chiltern south-east, local clay over the chalk fed brick and tile making for centuries, and Nettlebed's surviving kiln still recalls it, so red clay tile, brick and flint dominate the older villages. Towards Oxford, limestone becomes the familiar walling stone, slate arrived on Victorian terraces, and concrete tile covers most homes built since the war.
Old centres, new neighbourhoods
Several of the towns we cover keep conservation-area centres where roofs have been patched over generations, with replacement tiles laid among the originals and ridges re-bedded more than once. Heavy moss often hides that history. Once a roof like this is clean, older repairs and the odd cracked tile become visible, and we report them to you rather than attempt work that belongs to a roofer.
Elsewhere the county has grown quickly, with large twenty-first-century neighbourhoods around Didcot and on the edges of Oxford. Their concrete roofs are young, yet shaded pitches and lower courses can still collect moss after only a handful of winters. Age alone tells us little; the setting and the covering decide the method.
Roof cleaning by town
Every town below has its own roof cleaning page. The short notes show what sets each apart, from river damp and woodland shade to the age and make-up of the roofs themselves.

Listed and period roofs near the river and larger homes towards the woods, where the finish is agreed before work begins; we have worked in the town.

Distance from Marlow changes nothing about the work. Oxfordshire roofs follow the same careful sequence as those near our base.
We walk the property with you, put a drone up to see the ridges, valleys and rear slopes, and decide where access equipment can stand on your plot.
A report and quotation follow, explaining the method chosen for each covering and why, with a defined statement of works and nothing left vague.
Moss cushions are lifted by hand from a platform close to the roof, working from the top down, so the tiles are never walked on.
Clay is soft washed, slate and concrete are cleaned at the lowest pressure that works, and rinse water is steered away from walls, ponds and planting.
Gutters and downpipes are cleared, the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment goes on in frost-free weather, and the project lead talks you through what to expect.
Why us
Conservation-area roofs in the market towns are cleaned slowly and gently, with weathered colour kept and earlier repairs reported to you rather than disguised.
Clay, slate, stone-built houses and concrete estates sit within a few miles of each other here, and we identify the covering before choosing a method.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is only applied in settled, frost-free conditions, so a winter clean may be finished with a return visit for the treatment.
We are fully insured, and we say plainly what cleaning can achieve, what it cannot repair and whether your address is one we can serve well.

Questions
Yes. Oxford sits at the outer edge of the area we cover from Marlow. If your address lies beyond what we can serve properly, we will say so when you first get in touch rather than after a visit has been booked.
Yes, with the tiled roofs. Thatch is a thatcher's work and outside ours, but tiled garages, barns and extensions alongside it can be cleaned, with water and treatment kept well away from the thatch throughout.
Not harder, just different. Villages under the escarpment often bring narrow lanes, sloping plots and old clay roofs beneath trees, so access is planned closely at the visit. The river towns raise questions of damp and run-off instead, and the survey covers both.
Not usually. Cleaning a roof is ordinary maintenance. We use the gentlest suitable method on historic tile and slate and keep their weathered colour. If a roof needs repair rather than cleaning, that is for you, your roofer and the planning authority to decide.
That depends on shade, damp and nearby trees as much as on the roof itself. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment typically protects for between 12 and 24 months, slowing the return of moss and algae; roofs under woodland or near the river tend towards the shorter end.
No. There is no charge for the site visit or for the clear quotation that follows it, and nothing is agreed until you have read our recommendations and decided they suit you.
