Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Henley-on-Thames
Roof moss removal in Henley-on-Thames from powered access: low-pressure cleaning, gutters cleared and Chiltern EverGuard™ protection on a concrete tile roof.
Roof Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Nettlebed sits high in the Chilterns among beech woods and common land, so many roofs spend much of the day in shade and collect leaves every autumn. We clear the moss by hand, clean carefully and finish with treatment.

Our approach
Woodland brings shade, leaf fall and a steady supply of spores, and a roof in those conditions rarely gets the chance to dry. Growth comes back more readily here than on an open site, which makes the way a roof is cleaned all the more important. We want to remove what has built up without wearing the surface it sits on.

Village character
Nettlebed is a South Oxfordshire village set high in the wooded Chilterns. For centuries it was one of the most important brick and tile making centres in the hills, and its historic kiln still stands. Many homes are listed and the village centre is a conservation area, so older brickwork and traditional roof tiles are part of everyday life here.
Beech woods, mature trees and large stretches of common land surround the village. Leaves settle in valleys and gutters, branches shade roof slopes for much of the day and surfaces dry slowly after rain. Those are exactly the conditions in which moss, algae and lichen establish, often more heavily on one side of a roof than the other.
Leaves and moss
Under trees, a gutter takes leaf litter from above and moss shed from the tiles, and a roof with heavy growth sends down a steady stream of both. Valleys and the backs of chimneys gather the same mix.
During a roof clean, everything we lift is controlled as it comes down, and leaves lodged in valleys and along the lower courses come off with the moss. We then clear the gutter run and check the downpipes so the drainage works as it should.
Older tiles
On older and listed homes the roof may hold tiles of different ages, earlier repairs and details that have weathered at different rates. We look closely at all of that before deciding how far the roof should be cleaned.
The moss is taken off by hand, and any washing afterwards is matched to the condition of the tiles, at the lowest pressure that works or as a soft wash. Natural colour and the marks of age are left alone.
Before and after
Once the moss and film have gone, a roof usually looks markedly lighter and more even, and its tiles, ridges and gutters can be seen clearly again. That clear view is useful in itself: it is far easier to spot a slipped tile or a tired ridge when nothing is growing over it.
Heavy, long-standing lichen may leave faint marks that continue to fade after treatment rather than vanishing on the day.
After cleaning
Every roof we clean receives the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment as a final stage. It penetrates the surface, targeting the spores and residual growth left behind, and helps reduce how soon moss and algae re-establish.
Under woodland, expect protection nearer the shorter end of its typical range of 12 to 24 months. The treatment needs settled weather and no frost, and as the period comes to an end we email to offer a free assessment.
How we work
Our roof work always runs in this order. The method used at each stage is set by what we found on the visit.
We study the roof, the trees around it and the access, using a drone where it helps and showing you the live images while we are with you.
A written report sets out the method, the access and our reasoning, with a defined statement of works so there are no surprises later.
Working from platforms, towers or poles close to the slope, operatives remove the moss and lodged leaves without walking on the roof.
The tiles are cleaned at low pressure or soft washed as agreed, and the treatment follows once the weather is settled and free of frost.
Gutters and downpipes are cleared, the area below is left tidy, and the project lead explains the work carried out and the aftercare.
Good to know
Cleaning and treatment buy time, but they cannot change the woodland around the house. A roof under beech trees will see moss and algae return sooner than an exposed one, and gutters will keep filling with leaves each autumn. We will give you an honest view of how your roof is likely to behave.
Why us
Shade, leaf fall and slow-drying roofs are the conditions we plan around across the Chilterns, not exceptions we work round on the day.
Traditional tiles and earlier repairs are assessed before any method is chosen, and natural weathering is kept rather than scrubbed away.
Moss and leaves brought down by the clean are removed from the gutters, and downpipes are checked before we leave.
Fully insured operatives work from proper access equipment, and you receive a full handover explaining what was applied.
Around the village
We also work on roofs in Highmoor, Nuffield, Bix, Stoke Row, Russell's Water and Crocker End. Most share the same woodland surroundings, and every roof is assessed before we suggest a method.

Questions
Shade and moisture. Trees block sun and wind, so slopes dry slowly, and leaf litter on the tiles holds damp and feeds growth. Woodland also produces a constant supply of spores, which settle readily on a surface that stays wet.
Yes, in many cases, with extra care. Older roofs are assessed closely for fragile tiles and earlier repairs, and the method is kept as gentle as the roof needs. If the condition suggests cleaning would do more harm than good, we will say so.
Yes. Leaves lodged in valleys, behind chimneys and along the lower courses are taken off with the moss, and the gutters are cleared afterwards so the material does not stay in the drainage.
Often it makes sense. Cleaning after leaf fall means the gutters are cleared of the year's leaves along with the moss. The treatment still needs settled, frost-free weather, so timing is something we discuss at the visit.
Not necessarily. Moss, algae and most staining can be removed, but natural ageing in the tiles remains, and some deep lichen marks fade slowly after treatment. We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows.
It depends on shade and exposure. Protection from the treatment typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and under heavy tree cover it tends towards the shorter end. We email as it nears its end and offer a free reassessment.
