Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Henley-on-Thames
Roof moss removal in Henley-on-Thames from powered access: low-pressure cleaning, gutters cleared and Chiltern EverGuard™ protection on a concrete tile roof.
Roof Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Where the Thames cuts through the Goring Gap, river damp and wooded slopes keep many roofs wet for long spells. We take the moss off by hand, clean old plain tiles gently and look after the flint and brick walls below.

Our starting point
Cleaning a roof sends water, moss and debris downwards, past old flint walls, painted joinery, glazing and planting. In a village like this, those surfaces matter as much as the tiles. So the plan covers the whole route from ridge to ground: how growth is lifted, where it goes and what is protected on the way.

The setting
Goring lies on the east bank of the Thames at the western edge of the Chilterns National Landscape, facing Streatley across the river where it passes through the Goring Gap. Much of the older village is a conservation area, and its traditional buildings show flint with brick dressings, red brick, render and plain clay-tiled roofs.
That position brings moisture from the river and shade from the wooded slopes and mature gardens, so roofs can stay damp well after rain. Shaded rear pitches and roofs beneath trees develop moss and lichen first, while larger riverside homes and newer properties add concrete tiles, extensions and lower roofs to the mix.
Plain tiles
A plain-tiled roof is made of many small tiles, each lapped over the course below, which gives moss a great many edges to grow along. On older roofs some tiles will have weathered softer than others, and a few may be cracked or slipped. We look for those first, lift the moss from the laps by hand and keep the cleaning that follows gentle, so the roof keeps its natural character.
Below the roof
Old flint walls with brick dressings and painted woodwork sit directly beneath many roofs here, with borders and lawns at their feet. Before work begins we look at what lies below the working area and plan around it: protecting planting and vulnerable finishes where needed, controlling the moss as it comes down and rinsing surfaces where appropriate.
Gutters are emptied and downpipes checked, so nothing removed from the roof is left to block the drainage or stain a wall.
Choosing the clean
Once the bulk of the moss has been lifted by hand, the surface still needs cleaning, and there are two main options. A soft wash applies a cleaning solution at very low pressure and lets it work, which suits older or more delicate tiles. A low-pressure surface clean gives a more immediate change on sound tiles that can take it.
We recommend one or the other, or a combination, after seeing the roof, and explain why.
Slowing regrowth
Every roof we clean is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, which works into the surface to target residual spores and helps reduce how quickly growth returns. In a valley where mist and shade are part of daily life it will not stop moss coming back altogether.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months depending on the roof's position, covering and maintenance. It is applied in settled, frost-free conditions, and we email when a reassessment may be due.
Step by step
Every roof here is handled in the same five stages; the detail within each depends on the tiles and the ground beneath them.
We assess the tiles, the growth and the access, use a drone where helpful and share the images, and note the walls, glazing and planting below the roof.
You receive our recommendation and a defined statement of works, including what will be protected and how the roof will be reached.
Vulnerable areas below are protected, then operatives on access equipment lift the bulk of the moss by hand without stepping onto the tiles.
The roof is soft washed or cleaned at low pressure as agreed, and the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied once conditions are settled and frost-free.
Gutters and downpipes are cleared, surrounding surfaces are rinsed or tidied as needed, and the project lead walks you through the result.
Realistic results
An older plain-tile roof will look clearly better after cleaning, but it will keep the variation and softened colour that come with age, and some long-standing lichen marks may only fade gradually after treatment. Cleaning does not repair cracked or slipped tiles. If we find any, we tell you, and on a roof that needs a roofer first we will recommend that before any cleaning.
Why us
Traditional flint, brick and clay are common here, and we plan the work so they are treated gently from the ridge to the ground.
Moss comes off by hand first, which means the cleaning stage can be gentle rather than forceful on old tiles.
Moss and debris that come down are cleared from gutters and downpipes, so the clean does not create a blockage.
Everyone working on your roof is fully insured and works from suitable access equipment, never from the tiles themselves.

Our roof cleaning also reaches Streatley, South Stoke, Woodcote, Whitchurch-on-Thames, Moulsford and Checkendon. Several share the same river-valley or wooded setting, and each roof there is assessed on its own merits.

Questions
Moisture is the reason. Mist and damp air from the Thames, together with shade from wooded slopes and garden trees, mean many roofs dry slowly after rain. Moss and algae grow fastest where a surface rarely dries out completely.
Not if the work is planned properly. We look at the walls, pointing and joinery beneath the roof before starting, protect what needs it and rinse surfaces where appropriate as the work moves down.
Yes, where the roof suits it. A soft wash is often our choice for older or more delicate tiles once the moss has been lifted by hand. Sounder roofs may be better served by a low-pressure clean, which we decide at the site visit.
Yes, in most cases, with the right method. We check for cracked, slipped or weakened tiles first, never walk on the roof and keep pressure to the minimum. If tiles are already failing, we recommend repairs before any cleaning.
No. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment reduces regrowth and slows its return, but in a damp, wooded setting spores keep arriving. Its protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and we get in touch by email as that period nears its end.
It is controlled as it comes down rather than washed into outlets. We then empty the gutters and check the downpipes, so the moss does not simply move from the roof into the drainage.
