Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Henley-on-Thames
Roof moss removal in Henley-on-Thames from powered access: low-pressure cleaning, gutters cleared and Chiltern EverGuard™ protection on a concrete tile roof.
Roof Cleaning · Berkshire
Reading's Victorian expansion left street after street of terraced houses, many still under slate, with inter-war suburbs and newer estates around them. We clean each roof to suit its covering, including your share of a continuous terrace roof, and apply Chiltern EverGuard™.

The starting point
On a terraced street, one roof often runs unbroken across several houses. We clean the section that belongs to you, finishing neatly at the party line, and explain at the site visit what that means for the look of the row. Neighbours can book together if they want the whole run done in one visit; that is entirely their choice.

Reading roofs
Reading grew rapidly in the Victorian period, and many of its streets are lined with terraced houses in red and patterned brick, typically with slate roofs, chimney stacks on the party walls and a narrower back addition behind. Edwardian houses followed, then inter-war suburbs with hipped tiled roofs, and later estates and newer developments further out. The borough protects a number of conservation areas where that older character survives.
The Thames and the Kennet both run through the town, and areas close to them, along with leafy suburbs such as Caversham, have plenty of mature trees. Terraced streets bring their own conditions too: rear roofs facing north stay in the shadow of the house, and closely packed back additions shade one another.
Terraces
When a single roof covers several houses, the boundary between them is usually marked only by the party wall beneath. We agree that line with you at the site visit and clean up to it, so the work stops cleanly at your boundary rather than wandering across a neighbour's slates.
Because a cleaned section will look different from the uncleaned roof beside it, we talk that through beforehand. Moss on the neighbouring roof can also go on shedding spores onto yours, which is worth knowing when you think about how long the result will last.
Slate
Slate is hard and sheds water well, but on older roofs it is thin and its fixings can tire with age. Walking on it risks cracking slates or loosening them, which is why nobody stands on the roof. We work from access towers and poles close to the surface, lift moss from the laps by hand and clean with close control at low pressure.
Suburban roofs
Further from the centre, inter-war semi-detached houses usually have hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles, and post-war and newer estates are largely concrete. Hips and ridges on these roofs gather moss along their lines, and textured concrete holds growth in every groove. Moss comes off by hand first, and the cleaning that follows is set for the tile in front of us rather than a standard setting for the street.
Newer roofs with smooth plain tiles tend to show dark algae and lichen speckling more than thick moss, and a soft wash is often all they need.
Protection
We apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment to each roof we clean, slate or tile. It works into the surface to tackle spores and residual growth that cleaning cannot always reach, and helps slow regrowth.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, influenced by shade, nearby trees and, on a terrace, the state of the roofs next door. It is applied in settled, frost-free weather, and as the period draws to a close we email to offer a free reassessment.
Our process
Every roof follows the same stages. On a terrace, agreeing the boundary and the access route is part of the very first one.
We look at the roof from the street and garden, by drone where appropriate with live images shared, and agree the boundary of your section on a shared roof.
Our report covers the method for each covering, the reasons behind it, the access plan and a defined statement of works, together with a clear quotation.
Operatives work as close to the slates or tiles as practical without standing on them, lifting the bulk of the moss by hand, including from back addition roofs.
The roof is cleaned at low pressure or soft washed to suit its covering, then the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied once the weather is settled and frost-free.
Moss is cleared from front and rear gutters and the downpipes checked. The project lead then explains what was done, what was applied and what to expect.
Worth knowing
A clean roof can look transformed, yet it is still the same roof. On older slate and tile, weathering, earlier repairs and mismatched replacements may remain or stand out more, and we aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows.
Why us
On a shared roof we agree your boundary first and stop neatly at it, so the work is confined to your property.
Older slates and their fixings are protected by working from towers and poles beside the roof, never standing on it.
Main roof, back addition and rear gutters are planned into one visit, so the parts out of view from the street are not forgotten.
Fully insured operatives, a briefing in the days before the work and a full handover from the project lead when it is finished.
Nearby
We also clean roofs in Caversham across the Thames, in Tilehurst and Calcot to the west, and in Earley, Woodley and Sonning to the east. Housing types change from one to the next, so each roof is assessed in person.

Questions
Yes. We agree the boundary of your section, usually the line of the party wall, at the site visit and clean up to it. The cleaned section will look different from the roof beside it, and we explain that beforehand.
Yes, in most cases, once it has been checked. Slates and fixings are assessed first; sound slate is cleaned with close control at low pressure, without anyone standing on it. A roof already failing needs a roofer before a clean.
Sometimes. Spores travel on the wind, and an uncleaned roof next door is a nearby source. The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment helps reduce regrowth on your section, but it cannot stop spores arriving from elsewhere.
Yes, where access allows. Back additions are often slate and sit in the shadow of the main house, so they can be greener than the front. They are cleaned in the same visit as the main roof.
No, not in the usual sense. Moss is lifted by hand, and the slate is then cleaned at low pressure with close control, or soft washed. High pressure on old slate risks damaging it and driving water under the laps.
Yes. Older roofs in conservation areas are cleaned with the same gentle, material-led approach as any period roof. If you are unsure whether anything about your building is protected, check with the council before work is booked.
It depends on shade, nearby trees and the roofs around yours. Protection from the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment typically runs for 12 to 24 months, and as it nears its end we send an email offering a free reassessment.
