Gutter Cleaningin Goring
Goring lies in the Thames gap between wooded hills, and its gutters catch leaves from the slopes and moss from the roofs above them. We clear every run, flush the downpipes and tell you what we found along the way.
- Upper and lower runs cleared
- Moss and leaves removed
- Downpipes run through

Where the water goes
Every roof drains into another until it reaches the ground
On a house with more than one roof level, the upper gutter often empties onto a lower roof, and the lower gutter then carries water and debris from both. That makes the lowest runs the busiest on the building, and often the first to block. We clear the system from top to bottom so each stage is left able to take what comes down to it.

Goring homes
River, hills and old clay-tiled cottages
Goring sits on the east bank of the Thames where the river cuts through the Goring Gap, at the western edge of the Chilterns National Landscape. Wooded slopes rise around the village, gardens are full of mature trees, and moist air from the river means roofs and gutters are slow to dry after rain.
Much of the older village is a conservation area, with flint and red brick walls, rendered houses and plain clay-tiled roofs, alongside larger riverside homes and newer properties. Older cottages often have extensions and outshuts added at lower heights over the years, and their gutters sit directly beneath the moss on the main roof.
Lower roofs
Why the lowest gutter on the house is often the worst
A gutter on an extension, porch or lean-to takes the rainwater that falls on its own roof and, frequently, everything that runs off the larger roof above. Moss, leaves and silt arrive from both, and they arrive faster. These lower runs are also the ones most often hidden behind planting or tucked above a conservatory, so they can go unchecked for years.
We look at them first, because they tend to tell us most about how the whole roofline is coping.
Roof moss
A source that keeps feeding the gutter all year
Leaf fall is seasonal; moss is not. A shaded, damp roof under trees can carry thick cushions of it, and pieces break away whenever they dry out, are disturbed by birds or are washed loose in heavy rain. That is why a gutter below a mossy roof can be packed in spring or summer as well as after autumn.
Clearing the gutter deals with what has fallen. If the roof above is the main source, we will mention it, so you can decide whether Roof Cleaning is worth considering separately.
Riverside trees
Leaves, seed and twigs from the slopes and the bank
Wooded hillsides and the trees along the river drop a heavy load of leaves each autumn, and wind carries them across roofs well away from the trees themselves. Seeds, catkins and small twigs add to it through the rest of the year.
- Leaves and twigs lifted out of every run
- Seeds and seedlings cleared before they root
- Silt and moss removed from the outlets
- Debris taken away, not left in your borders
Our process
Top to bottom, one stage at a time
We work from the highest gutter down, so nothing we clear above ends up in a run we have already finished.
- 01
Map every level
At the site visit we note each gutter, where it discharges and what lies above it, including lower roofs that take water from the main one.
- 02
Clear from the top
Upper runs are cleared first with a pole-fed vacuum from the ground where it reaches, then the lower runs, so debris is never pushed into a clean channel. A properly footed ladder covers the rest.
- 03
Flush the route
Water is sent through each stage in turn and down every downpipe, so we see it travel from the highest gutter to ground level without backing up.
- 04
Re-seat and note
Brackets that have slipped and joints that have separated are re-seated where it is a minor job; splits and failed seals are recorded for a specialist.
- 05
Report and tidy
The outer faces of the gutters and fascias are washed, the debris leaves with us and you get a short summary covering every level of the roofline.
Know the limits
What clearing achieves, and where it stops
Clearing gets water moving through a sound system again. It does not remove the moss still growing on the roof, repair a cracked or sagging length, or deal with a blocked drain below ground.
Under trees and a mossy roof, the gutters will refill over time, so we suggest a sensible interval based on what we removed.
Why us
Reasons to ask us about your gutters
All levels included
Lower roofs, extensions and lean-tos are cleared along with the main eaves, because they often carry the heaviest load.
Worked in the right order
Upper runs before lower ones, so nothing we lift out lands in a gutter we have already cleared.
Honest about the source
If the roof is shedding most of the debris, we tell you, so you can decide how you would like to deal with it.
Fully insured
Fully insured operatives, with access for every part of the roofline agreed at the site visit before any work begins.

Questions
Gutter Cleaning in Goring: your questions
Why does my extension gutter block more often than the main one?
Because it collects from two roofs. Water and debris from the main roof run down onto the extension, so its gutter carries a double load, often in a shadier spot. We check lower runs closely for that reason.
Can moss from the roof block my gutters?
Yes. Moss loosens from the tiles throughout the year and settles in the channel, where it soaks up water and binds leaves together. It often forms the plug over the outlet that causes an overflow.
Should I have the roof cleaned before the gutters?
Yes, if you are planning both. Roof Cleaning brings moss down into the gutters, so clearing them first only for them to fill again makes little sense. When a roof is cleaned, its gutters are cleared afterwards as standard.
Do you clear gutters from the ground?
Mostly. A pole-fed gutter vacuum reaches most domestic runs from ground level. Where a conservatory, a deep overhang or planting gets in the way, we use a properly footed ladder, agreed at the site visit.
How often should gutters be cleared in Goring?
Once or twice a year suits most homes. Houses beneath trees or a mossy roof, which is common near the river and the wooded slopes, usually need the more frequent end of that range.
Do you take the debris away?
Yes. Everything we lift out goes into the vacuum or our bags rather than onto your beds and paths, and it leaves the property with us when we finish.
