Gutter Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Didcot has grown in clear stages, from its older village streets to Ladygrove and Great Western Park. Gutters on every era of house still block, so we clear them, flush the downpipes to prove the flow and report back.

Newer homes too
Clean white uPVC can make a gutter look as though it needs nothing. Inside, wind-blown leaves, roof grit and fragments of moss settle just the same, and the outlets of a modern system are no larger than an old one's. The question to ask is not how old the guttering is, but whether water still runs through every length of it.

Didcot homes
Didcot has grown through several periods, which gives it a wider spread of houses than many places nearby. Older homes remain around the original village and Northbourne, post-war estates followed, then Ladygrove, and more recently Great Western Park. Each phase has its own rooflines, from older brick houses with mixed gutter materials to modern homes with uPVC throughout.
On the newer estates, large trees are fewer and younger, so the debris in the gutters comes more from roof moss, wind-blown leaves and grit off concrete tiles than from overhanging branches. Older streets and gardens with established trees add autumn leaf fall to that, and extensions and conservatories added since the houses were built bring extra runs at lower levels.
Where debris comes from
A gutter does not need a tree beside it to fill. Moss growing on concrete tiles loosens in pieces and slides down to the eaves, wind carries leaves across open estates until they catch on a roof, and fine grit washes off the tiles in every shower.
Combined, they form a dense, wet layer at the bottom of the channel that gathers at the outlet. On a house with a mossy roof and no trees nearby, this is often the whole story.
Proof of flow
A gutter that looks empty from below has only been half checked. Debris can sit at the top of the downpipe, at a swan-neck where the pipe bends back to the wall or at the shoe at its foot, and none of that shows from the ground.
Once the channels are clear, we send water through each run and down every pipe and watch it come out at the bottom. If it backs up, the restriction is found now, not in the next downpour.
Drains below
The rainwater system continues below ground, through gullies, channel drains and buried pipes that nobody sees. If water still will not get away after the gutter and downpipe are clear, the cause is likely to be down there.
That lies outside gutter cleaning, so we record what we saw, where the water stopped and what we would suggest checking next, rather than guess or claim a fix we have not made.
Later additions
Many homes here have gained a conservatory, garage conversion or single-storey extension since they were built. The extra gutter usually sits lower down, takes run-off from the main roof and may run over glass or along a narrow side path.
We clear these sections by vacuum or by hand depending on access, without putting weight on any glazed roof, and agree the method for each one at the free site visit.
Step by step
The same five stages apply to every house. Only the access changes, and we settle that at the free site visit.
We look at each gutter, outlet, swan-neck and downpipe, along with extensions and conservatories, and note any bracket or joint that already looks loose.
A pole-fed gutter vacuum lifts moss, leaves and grit from ground level wherever the run allows; a properly footed ladder is used where it does not.
Water goes through each channel and down each downpipe while we watch the outflow. Anything that backs up is traced as far as the downpipe and recorded.
Loose brackets and joints that have pulled apart are re-seated where the fix is minor. Splits and runs that have lost their fall are reported instead.
The outer faces of the gutters, fascias and soffits are washed of green streaking, debris leaves with us, and you get a short written summary.
Good to know
Clearing and flushing get a sound gutter working again and show whether the downpipes are clear.
Why us
Each downpipe is flushed and watched, so you know the system drains rather than taking an empty-looking gutter on trust.
Most runs are cleared from the ground with a pole-fed vacuum, so nothing leans on fascias or stands in your borders.
If the problem lies in the drains below, we say so and record where the water stopped, rather than overstate what we fixed.
Fully insured operatives, with access agreed at the site visit and a plain summary of the roofline when we finish.

We also clear gutters in Harwell, East Hagbourne, West Hagbourne, Blewbury, Steventon and Sutton Courtenay. Homes there range from old cottages to recent builds, and the same flow-first checks apply.

Questions
Yes, in most cases. Roof moss, wind-blown leaves and tile grit collect in new gutters just as in old ones. A newer home with a clean roof and no trees nearby may simply need clearing less often.
We watch it work. After clearing, water is sent through each channel and down every pipe, and we check it runs freely at the bottom rather than judging by how the gutter looks.
No. A blockage in buried drainage lies outside gutter cleaning. We record where the water stopped and suggest a drainage investigation, so the next step is based on what we actually saw.
Yes. We reach them by vacuum or by hand, whichever the access allows, and never rest equipment on the glazing. The falls on these gutters are shallow, so they are flushed afterwards to check they drain.
Yes. Once the channels are clear, green streaking is washed off the outer faces of the gutters, fascias and soffits. Aluminium, steel and painted finishes are washed without anything abrasive.
For most homes, once a year is a reasonable starting point, or twice where trees or a mossy roof are close by. We suggest an interval after seeing how much came out.
