Driveway Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Set high among beech woods and common land, Nettlebed drives catch leaves, mast and shade for much of the year. We clean each surface with the care it needs, restore block-paved joints and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Woodland setting
On most driveways, wheels and weather do the damage. Around Nettlebed, the trees play the bigger part: they shade the paving, keep it damp, drop leaves that stain as they rot and fill the joints with debris. Our site visit looks at those surroundings as closely as the surface, because they decide the method and how soon growth will return.

The village
Nettlebed sits high in the wooded Chilterns between Henley-on-Thames and Wallingford, ringed by beech woods and wide stretches of common. Many homes stand close to mature trees and hedged boundaries, so drives spend much of the day in shade and collect leaf fall well into winter. Paving that rarely dries out is where moss and algae take hold.
For centuries the village was one of the Chilterns' main centres for brick and tile making, and brick remains a strong presence in the older buildings of its conservation-area centre. Entrances vary from short frontages in the village to longer country drives, and the surfaces include gravel, block paving, tarmac, natural stone and resin, often within one property.
Leaf fall
Leaves that settle on a drive and are left to break down do two things. They release tannins that leave brown or dark marks on lighter paving, and they turn into a fine, damp debris that packs into joints and along edges. Both are most obvious where a drive runs beside a hedge or under a canopy.
We clear the build-up, lift the staining and treat the growth that has followed it, using the lowest pressure that achieves the result. How far leaf marks lift depends on the paving and how long they have been there, and very old, deep staining may soften rather than disappear. In a setting this wooded, regular sweeping between cleans makes a real difference to how long the result lasts.
Gravel and country drives
Gravel is common on country drives, and it gathers weeds, moss and organic debris rather than film. We treat it for all three and leave the surface tidy. Where a gravel drive meets a paved apron, a tarmac edge or a stone path, each part is cleaned in the way that suits its own material.
Longer entrances also tend to change as they go: open and sunny near the road, damp and green under the trees nearer the house. We quote for the whole length and plan the work so the finish is consistent from one end to the other.
Brick and boundaries
In a village with a long brick-making history, drives often run alongside old walls, piers and steps with soft mortar and weathered faces. Those are more delicate than the paving, so the method is set for them at the boundary and nearby planting is protected before any treatment is applied.
The aim is a cleaner drive that still sits naturally beside an older house, not one that makes the brickwork around it look tired by comparison or stripped back.
Block paving
Block paving under trees is often dark with algae, its joints half empty and weeds rooted in the gaps. Cleaning lifts the growth and the old jointing sand together, which is why the restoration continues once the surface is clean.
How we work
The stages below apply to every drive we restore. The setting decides the detail within them, especially on entrances under trees.
At a free site visit we identify the surface, check joints, edges and drainage, and note where shade, leaf fall and damp are doing the most harm.
Leaf litter and loose debris are cleared, loose items moved, and nearby walls, doors and planting considered and protected before cleaning begins.
Each material is cleaned with the method and pressure set for it, using heated water where it is tolerated. Leaf staining and established growth receive targeted treatment rather than extra force.
Block paving is dried, compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand. Gravel is treated and left tidy, and other surfaces are finished to suit.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to help reduce regrowth, and we explain what a shaded, wooded setting means for upkeep from here.
Under the trees
A drive surrounded by woodland will see moss and algae return sooner than one in open ground, however thoroughly it is cleaned. Chiltern EverGuard™ protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, and here it is likely to sit towards the shorter end.
Cleaning restores colour and clears growth, but it will not mend sunken blocks, cracked concrete or tarmac that is breaking up. We point out anything like that at the visit, so you know what a clean will and will not achieve.
Why us
Trees, shade and leaf fall are part of every assessment, because they decide the method and how soon the drive will need attention again.
Gravel, block paving, tarmac, stone and resin on the same entrance each receive the method and pressure that suits them.
Applied to every driveway we restore, to help slow the return of moss and algae on paving that stays damp.
Fully insured operatives who protect old walls and planting and leave the drive and its surroundings tidy.
Nearby
We also clean driveways in the villages and hamlets around Nettlebed, including Highmoor, Nuffield, Stoke Row, Russell's Water, Crocker End and Bix. Most sit among the same beech woods, so shade and leaf fall shape the work there too.

Questions
Often, yes. Leaf staining is one of the marks we treat as part of the clean. How far it lifts depends on the paving and how long the marks have been there; stains that have sat in porous paving for many seasons may fade rather than disappear, and we tell you which to expect at the visit.
Yes. Gravel is treated for weeds, moss and organic debris, and the surface is left tidy. Where gravel meets paving, tarmac or stone, those parts are cleaned with their own method.
Yes, every time. Once the cleaned drive has dried, we compact it with a vibrating plate compactor and refill every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand rather than conventional kiln-dried sand.
Not indefinitely. Shade and leaf fall mean growth returns sooner than on an open drive. Chiltern EverGuard™ helps slow it, and regular sweeping of leaves between cleans makes a noticeable difference.
Yes. Old brick and soft mortar are more delicate than most paving, so at the boundary we set the method for the wall rather than the drive and protect any planting beside it.
Typically between 12 and 24 months, depending on the location, the surrounding environment, the surface and how it is maintained. On a drive under woodland cover, expect the shorter end of that range.
