Driveway Cleaning · 8 towns
In south Oxfordshire a drive may sit on level Thames-side ground, beneath the Chiltern scarp, among beech woods or beside old city stone. We clean each one by its material and its setting, then finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

The south-east of the county
The part of Oxfordshire we serve runs from the Thames at Henley-on-Thames and Goring, along the foot of the Chiltern escarpment and out across lower ground towards Thame, Didcot and Oxford. Driveways change character along the way: riverside frontages that rarely dry, hillside entrances where water runs fast, and market-town drives laid among centuries-old walls.
Land and water
Along the Thames, towns such as Wallingford and Henley-on-Thames sit on low, fairly level land. Water lingers there. Rinse water and silt do not run away on their own, and mist off the river slows drying on still mornings. Where the river cuts through the chalk at Goring, wooded slopes add shade to the damp.
Inland, the Chiltern escarpment rises sharply above Watlington, and drives on its lower slopes fall towards the road or the house, carrying silt and loosened moss downhill during any clean. Beyond the hills the land opens out around Thame and Didcot, where drives are more exposed to wind and sun and tend to show tyre lanes and weedy joints before green growth.
Stone, brick and mortar
Building materials shift from place to place in this corner of the county. Oxford is a city of limestone, much of it quarried at Headington. Villages along the Chiltern edge favour red brick with flint, and Nettlebed was for centuries a centre of brick and tile making. Older market towns keep setts, cobbles and natural stone in front of period houses.
Those materials often stand within a hand's width of the drive as boundary walls, gate piers, steps and edging, and many are bedded in soft lime mortar. A pressure a concrete drive tolerates can scour stone and lift lime pointing, so on period frontages the most delicate material sets the method and the work near walls slows right down.
Old towns and growing towns
Oxfordshire mixes long-established market towns with places that have grown a great deal in recent decades. In the historic centres, frontages are often short, close to the road and bordered by planting or old walls, so parking, hose runs and run-off are planned before the day.
Didcot has grown through several phases, and the edges of most towns now carry block paving, resin-bound gravel and porcelain laid within living memory. Those drives work hard. Daily parking leaves darker bays, oil drips and turning marks, and bins wheeled across the joints loosen the sand. Cleaning brings back colour and footing; re-jointing restores the structure that holds block paving together.
Eight places
Each town and village has a page of its own on how its driveways are cleaned. Here is the short version of what sets each one apart.

Tree-lined roads and long entrances that mix gravel, resin, stone and block paving, with shaded edges that green up before the open centre.

Level riverside ground where rinse water and silt will not drain away by themselves, so the falls and gullies are read before cleaning starts.

Setts and cobbles near the broad High Street, and newer drives further out where weed-filled joints, green margins and tyre lanes show first.
Learn Moreabout Driveway Cleaning in Thame
Sloping drives beneath the hills, framed by red brick and flint, where loosened moss and silt are collected at the lowest edge.

Drives between the river and the wooded Gap that dry slowly, so algae returns readily and an aftercare treatment earns its place.

High beech country and common land, where leaf litter, mast and tannin marks shape a drive more than traffic ever does.

Compact frontages beside stone walls and soft lime mortar, cleaned at the lowest workable pressure so neither drive nor boundary suffers.

The same four stages apply in a city street or a hillside village. What changes is how hard, how warm and how slowly we work.
At a free site visit we identify each material, look at the walls and planting around it, check the falls and drains, and explain the approach we recommend for each part.
We use the lowest pressure and the least product that will do the job, warm the water only where the material suits it, and repeat an application rather than force it.
On block paving the cleaned surface is compacted with a plate compactor, then every joint is refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand so the blocks lock together again.
The drive is finished with the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, which helps reduce regrowth, typically for 12 to 24 months, and the surrounding area is rinsed and left clear.
Our approach
Limestone, flint, old brick and lime mortar near the drive are protected with lower pressure and slower edge work, because damage to them cannot be reversed.
Stone setts, resin, porcelain, tarmac, concrete and block paving are never cleaned at a single setting; each gets its own approach after assessment.
On level riverside plots and sloping hillside drives alike, we plan where water and silt will go and collect it rather than leave it at the lowest point.
Chiltern Surface Co is fully insured, and every restored drive is finished with a treatment that helps slow the return of moss and algae.

Questions
Yes. We assess the stone and its joints first, then use a low-pressure method that lifts algae, moss and lichen without scouring the face. Some long-standing marks fade rather than vanish, and we will say which at the site visit.
Water needs a fall to drain away. On level ground it sits in shallow dips and joints, and river mist on still days slows drying further. That lasting damp is exactly what algae and moss need, so these drives often green up sooner than sloping ones.
Yes, with the right method. Resin-bound gravel is cleaned at low pressure using methods suited to resin systems, and porcelain is cleaned for an even finish across the slabs and joints. Both are finished with Chiltern EverGuard™.
Usually they can be significantly reduced. Specialist treatment lifts most oil and tyre marking, but very old stains that have soaked deep into the surface may not come out completely. We will tell you what is realistic before any work begins.
Not in the way loose sand does. We use Chiltern Polymeric Sand rather than conventional kiln-dried sand because it helps stabilise the paving and gives greater protection against washout, weeds and freeze-thaw damage. Joints still benefit from being kept clear of debris.
Yes. Cleaning a drive is not usually restricted, and we use gentle methods around historic fabric regardless. If something needs more than cleaning, such as repairs or relaying, that is for you and the local authority to agree, and we will tell you so.
