Sandstone Patio Cleaning and Re-Jointing in Oxford
Sandstone patio cleaning and repointing in Oxford: progressive black spot removal, loose slab repairs, Chiltern EverGuard™ and a complete resin repoint.
Driveway Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Oxford frontages are often compact, close to busy roads and edged by old stone or brick. We clean each driveway at the pressure its material needs, restore block-paved joints with Chiltern Polymeric Sand and finish with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Why method matters
A driveway cleaned too hard loses its jointing sand, picks up stripes and, on softer materials, can lose part of its surface. We work the other way round: identify the material first, set the lowest pressure and least chemical that will do the job, and accept a further application where that is gentler than more force.

City homes
Oxford's character owes a great deal to stone, much of it limestone quarried at Headington, and the city has eighteen conservation areas ranging from village settings to Victorian suburbs. Older houses and boundary walls often use stone, brick or stucco with soft lime mortar, and those finishes sit right beside the drive on many properties.
Away from the centre, neighbourhoods such as Headington, Summertown, Marston and Cowley mix Victorian and Edwardian houses with inter-war semis, post-war homes and newer developments. Frontages are frequently compact and close to the road, while mature street trees and the Thames and Cherwell corridors keep many surfaces shaded and slow to dry. Block paving, concrete, tarmac and resin are the usual finishes.
Home pressure washers
A home pressure washer can brighten a drive in an afternoon, but used too aggressively it can blast the sand out of block-paving joints, leave uneven cleaning lines, scar softer stone and loosen the surface of ageing tarmac. Growth also returns quickly when only the top of it has been removed.
A professional clean is not about bigger equipment. Its value lies in knowing how each material should be treated, how to deal with organic growth properly and how to finish the joints afterwards. On block paving that means drying the surface, compacting it with a vibrating plate compactor and refilling every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand.
Stone and mortar
Where a drive meets a limestone wall, a brick pier or a stuccoed front, the neighbouring surface is usually the more delicate of the two. Weathered stone and lime mortar can be damaged by pressure that the paving itself would shrug off, so at each boundary we set the method for the more vulnerable material and keep cleaning water directed away from it.
Natural stone driveways are assessed on their own terms. Sandstone, limestone, granite and slate are each looked at before the method and pressure are chosen, and we tell you at the visit what we expect to lift and what is likely to stay.
Busy streets
A small frontage on a busy road picks up road film and splash, tyre marks from daily parking and leaf fall from street trees. Because the whole drive is on view from the pavement, an uneven finish is easy to spot.
We clean the full frontage evenly, edges and gateway included, and treat staining separately from general dirt. Specialist treatment significantly reduces most oil marks, although very old stains soaked into porous paving may not lift completely. Working space is often tight on a city frontage, so we plan access and the order of work at the visit.
Concrete
Plain concrete is cleaned and treated for deeper staining where it needs it, and we say at the visit what we expect to lift. Pattern imprinted concrete is cleaned with care over its decorative colour and finish, and where the existing sealer has begun to fade, dull or wear away, we offer a resealing service.
Both are finished with Chiltern EverGuard™, as every drive we restore is, and neither is cleaned with more force than its surface needs.
The process
The same five stages apply to every drive. What we found at the site visit sets the method, pressure and treatment inside each of them.
We identify the surface, check joints, staining and drainage, look at the walls and finishes beside it, and plan access on what is often a tight frontage.
Vehicles, bins and loose items are moved where needed, and nearby stonework, doors and planting are considered and protected before cleaning begins.
The drive is cleaned evenly at the lowest pressure that achieves the result, with heated water where the material tolerates it and stubborn staining treated separately.
Block paving is left to dry, compacted with a vibrating plate compactor and refilled joint by joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand. Other surfaces receive the finishing they need.
The Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment is applied to help reduce regrowth, and we explain how the drive is likely to weather and what sensible upkeep looks like.
Know the limits
A restoration brings back colour, removes organic growth and leaves the joints full. It is not a repair, and it does not make an old drive look newly laid.
Why us
We have carried out work in Oxford and know how its stone, mortar, compact frontages and tree-lined streets affect a driveway.
The least pressure and chemical that achieves the result, with a further application preferred to more force on a sensitive surface.
Block paving is compacted and every joint refilled with Chiltern Polymeric Sand, which helps stabilise the paving and resist weeds.
Fully insured operatives who protect stonework, doors and planting and leave a tight frontage tidy at the end of the day.
Across the city
We clean driveways throughout Oxford's residential areas, including Headington, Summertown, Iffley, Marston, Wolvercote and Littlemore. Each neighbourhood has its own mix of house ages and surfaces, so every drive is assessed individually.

Questions
You can, but a domestic machine used too hard often strips the jointing sand, leaves stripes and can damage softer surfaces. Our restoration also re-beds block paving with a vibrating plate compactor, refills every joint with Chiltern Polymeric Sand and finishes with Chiltern EverGuard™.
No. We assess neighbouring stone, brick and mortar before we start, set the method for the more delicate surface at the boundary and direct cleaning water away from it.
Yes. Resin-bound surfaces are cleaned at low pressure using methods chosen for resin systems. If the resin is already cracked or loose, cleaning cannot rebuild it, and we will tell you before work is agreed.
Yes. Where the existing sealer has started to fade, dull or wear away, we offer a resealing service after the concrete has been cleaned with care over its colour and finish.
Yes, with control. Moss, algae and organic growth are the usual reasons we clean tarmac, and the pressure is kept to what the surface needs. Older, softer or patched areas are identified first.
That depends on shade, nearby trees, traffic and the surface. Chiltern EverGuard™ helps reduce regrowth, with protection that typically lasts between 12 and 24 months depending on the location, environment, surface type and maintenance.
