Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Henley-on-Thames
Roof moss removal in Henley-on-Thames from powered access: low-pressure cleaning, gutters cleared and Chiltern EverGuard™ protection on a concrete tile roof.
Roof Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Oxford's roofs run from Victorian terraces and inter-war semis to stone-built houses and new developments, often joined to a neighbour's. We plan access around tight plots, lift the moss by hand and clean as gently as each covering needs.

City roofs
On a terrace or a pair of semis, your roof is part of a longer run. Growth often continues across the boundary, chimney stacks and gutters may be shared, and a cleaned half beside an uncleaned one shows a clear line. We agree exactly where the work starts and stops at the site visit, so you and your neighbour know what to expect.

City housing
The city mixes a historic centre with neighbourhoods of very different ages: Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war semis in suburbs such as Headington, Cowley, Marston and Summertown, stone-built houses and newer developments. There are 18 designated conservation areas, and roofs range from natural slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on later ones.
The Thames and the Cherwell run through Oxford, and their river corridors, along with mature street trees and shaded back gardens, keep some roofs damp for long periods. Rear slopes facing tight gardens get little sun, valleys between a main roof and a rear wing collect debris, and those slow-drying areas are where moss and lichen gather first.
Access
Many city homes have no side access, little space at the front and a rear reached only through the house or a shared passage. Access is therefore planned at the site visit, not on the day. We choose equipment that puts operatives close to the slope without anyone walking on the roof, and work out where it can stand, how the rear slopes will be reached and what needs protecting below.
Rear wings
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have a rear wing below the main roof, and plenty of homes have since added dormers or flat-roofed extensions. Where these meet, valleys and abutments collect moss and leaves from the slopes above.
We clear those junctions by hand and include any flat roofs in the assessment. Felt, EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass are cleaned with care around joints, edges and outlets so the membrane is not damaged.
The covering
Natural slate is common on older terraces, clay tiles appear on many period and inter-war homes, and concrete tiles on later houses and re-roofs. Each is handled differently. Slate is thin and checked for loose pieces; old clay can be more brittle than it looks; textured concrete holds moss and needs thorough work.
In every case the moss comes off by hand first, and the cleaning that follows uses the lowest pressure that achieves the result, or a soft wash.
Treatment
When the clean is finished we apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, as we do on every roof. It targets spores and residual growth in the surface and helps reduce how quickly moss and algae come back.
Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, with shaded rear slopes beside trees or close to the rivers likely to sit at the shorter end. It is applied only in settled, frost-free weather, and we email to offer a free assessment as the period closes.
Our process
Every roof we clean in the city follows the same five stages, adapted to the plot, the covering and the neighbours.
We assess the roof from the ground and by drone where appropriate, share the images with you and work out how each slope can be reached.
You receive a report and a clear quotation, including a defined statement of works that shows where the work begins and ends on a shared roof.
Operatives work from access equipment as close to the surface as practical and lift the bulk of the moss by hand, without stepping onto the roof.
The tiles or slates are cleaned at the agreed pressure or soft washed, and the treatment goes on once the weather is settled and frost-free.
Displaced moss is cleared from the gutters, downpipes are checked and the project lead explains what was done and what to expect over the coming months.
Know before you book
We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows. Cleaning does not repair slipped slates, cracked tiles or tired flashing, and clearing moss may reveal defects that were already there. On a shared roof, an untreated neighbouring section will carry on growing, so regrowth near the boundary is likely to appear sooner.
Why us
Access is worked out at the visit, so narrow frontages, shared passages and rear gardens are part of the plan from the start.
On terraces and semis we agree exactly which part of the roof is included, so there is no confusion with neighbours.
The bulk of the moss comes off by hand, which lets the cleaning stage stay gentle on slate, clay and concrete alike.
Fully insured operatives do the work, gutters are cleared before we leave and the project lead gives a full handover.
Across the city
We clean roofs throughout the city and its edges, including Headington, Summertown, Iffley, Marston, Wolvercote and Cowley. The approach is the same wherever the house is: assessment first, then the method that suits the roof.

Questions
Yes. We agree at the site visit exactly where your roof ends and keep the work to that area. A cleaned section next to an uncleaned one shows a visible line, so some neighbours choose to book at the same time.
It depends on the plot. At the site visit we look at the frontage, any shared passage and the rear garden, then choose access equipment that reaches the rear slope safely without anyone walking on the roof.
Yes, after inspection. We check for loose, slipped or cracked slates and the condition of the fixings first, then clean with close control from access equipment. If the roof needs a roofer before it can be cleaned, we say so.
Yes. Felt, EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass flat roofs can be cleaned with a carefully controlled method that avoids damaging the membrane, joints, edges or outlets. We assess them alongside the main roof.
No. The moss is taken off by hand first, and the cleaning that follows uses the lowest pressure that achieves the result on that covering, or a soft wash. High pressure can strip weathered tiles and drive water under the laps.
Yes, on every roof clean. Moss loosened from the slopes ends up in the gutters, so we empty them and check the downpipes before we go rather than leaving a blockage behind.
