Patio Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Nettlebed sits high in the Chilterns, wrapped in beech woods and common land, so a lot of garden paving spends its day in shade. We clean it with control, treat what is growing and help you plan how often it needs doing.

Our approach
Where a patio sits among woodland, growth comes back sooner than it does on open ground. That is not a failure of the clean; it is the setting. So alongside the clean itself, we talk about how the paving is used, how much shade it gets and how often it is likely to need attention, and we explain all of this at a free site visit.

The village setting
Nettlebed stands high on the Chiltern hills between Henley-on-Thames and Wallingford, and the village is ringed by beech woods and open common. Many gardens back onto trees or have mature trees of their own, which means long periods of shade, a heavy drop of leaves each autumn and paving that stays cool and damp well into the day.
The village has a long history of brick and tile making, and its historic brick kiln still stands. Many older homes, a number of them listed and within the conservation area, are built of brick, and their patios and paths often run close against that brickwork. Newer homes have sandstone, porcelain or concrete paving, sometimes wrapping right round the house.
Shade and leaves
Algae needs little more than damp and shade, and paving under trees has both for most of the year. A green film builds on the slabs, moss fills the joints, and leaves left lying through the autumn stain the surface as they break down.
Beech mast and twigs collect in corners and against walls, holding water there. None of this harms sound paving quickly, but it makes it slippery underfoot and, left long enough, harder to bring back.
Upkeep
For a patio under trees, a regular clean usually works out kinder to the paving than waiting until it is heavily covered, because less growth means less work at the cleaning stage. We suggest an interval once we have seen the garden, based on shade, leaf fall and how the patio is used.
Black spot
Black spot is a lichen that roots into the pores of natural stone and is common on sandstone in shaded gardens. Pressure alone lightens it without dealing with it.
We treat the visible marks with a specialist application during a controlled clean, and then apply the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, which soaks into the porous surface to target the live growth and slow its return. On older stone, deeply set marks may be reduced rather than cleared in one visit.
Paths and edges
Many homes here have more than a single patio: a path along the side of the house, steps down to a lawn, a terrace at the back. These narrower runs are often the shadiest of all and collect the most debris.
We clean them as part of the same job and with the same care, so the paving reads as one, and we keep the pressure down close to brickwork, doors and older mortar.
Step by step
The stages are the same whatever the garden; the time each takes depends on how much shade and growth we found at the visit.
We identify the paving and jointing, look at the type and depth of growth, and note trees, brickwork, steps and planting, then explain the method and the likely result.
Leaves, mast and loose debris are cleared from the paving and joints, movable items are set aside, and nearby planting and doors are protected where needed.
Each area is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure for the material, including paths and steps, with the pressure reduced near brickwork and glazing.
Black spot and established lichen get a specialist application, and joints that have washed out or broken down are re-sanded once the surface is ready.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean paving. We then suggest a sensible interval for the next clean, based on the shade and leaf fall around you.
Honest limits
In a woodland setting growth will come back, and sooner than it would on open ground. The treatment slows that rather than preventing it. Cleaning also cannot repair cracked or sunken slabs or failed pointing, and old staining sunk into porous stone can remain. We explain all of this before any work is agreed, so the result matches what you were told.
Why us
We are based in Marlow, also on the edge of the Chiltern woods, so shade, leaf fall and slow-drying paving are conditions we work with all the time.
Black spot and lichen are treated with a specialist application and Chiltern EverGuard™, not chased with ever higher pressure.
You leave with a sensible interval for the next visit and simple advice that keeps growth from getting established in between.
Fully insured operatives carry out every clean, with the scope and likely result explained at the site visit.
Nearby
We also clean patios in Highmoor, Nuffield, Bix, Stoke Row, Russell's Water and Crocker End. These villages share the same high, wooded setting, so shade and leaf fall shape the work there in much the same way.

Questions
There is no fixed answer, but paving in heavy shade usually needs attention sooner than open paving. We suggest an interval after the site visit, based on how much shade, leaf fall and use the patio gets.
As leaves break down on the paving they release natural colour, which can mark the surface, particularly porous sandstone. Most of these marks lift with cleaning and treatment, though very old ones may only lighten.
Yes, in most cases it can be reduced significantly. It is treated with a specialist application as well as cleaning, because it grows within the stone. Deeply established marks may need a second visit.
Yes. Paths, steps and paving around the house can be cleaned in the same visit and with the same care, so the whole run of paving finishes evenly. We agree what is included at the site visit.
Typically between 12 and 24 months. Under heavy tree cover it tends to sit towards the shorter end, and on open paving towards the longer. Surface type and regular sweeping also make a difference.
Not on its own, but it helps a great deal. Clearing leaves and grit before they settle stops growth getting a foothold in the joints, which lengthens the time between professional cleans.
Yes. Pressure is reduced and the lance angled away as we approach brick walls and steps, so the paving is cleaned without water being driven into soft brick faces or older mortar.
