Indian Sandstone Patio Cleaning and Repointing in Henley-on-Thames
185m² Indian sandstone patio in Henley-on-Thames: black spot improved, loose slabs relaid and the patio fully repointed, with Chiltern EverGuard™ protection.
Patio Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Many homes in Henley-on-Thames use the patio as an outdoor room, from small courtyards behind period houses to broad terraces facing the garden. We clean each at the lowest pressure the paving needs, treat black spot properly and leave the stone its age.

Our approach
A patio here is often where meals are eaten and guests are welcomed for half the year, and it sits among lawns, borders, steps and glazed doors. We look at all of it at a free site visit: the stone, the joints, what is growing and what surrounds the paving. Then we explain which method suits it and why.

Henley gardens
Henley-on-Thames grew up on the west bank of the Thames, with the wooded Chiltern hills rising behind it. Moisture off the river and the shade of mature garden trees slow the drying of paving after rain, and slow drying is exactly what algae, moss and lichen need. The strip beside a hedge, the corner under a tree and the paving at the foot of a north-facing wall usually turn green first.
The patios are as mixed as the houses. Behind period properties near the historic centre there are older natural stone terraces and brick details that have weathered for decades. Renovated and newer homes more often carry Indian sandstone or large-format porcelain set among landscaped borders. We have cleaned patios in the town before, and each of those surfaces asked for a different approach.
Character
Weathered natural stone carries variation that belongs to it: softened edges, slabs that are warmer or darker than their neighbours and a face worn smooth by footsteps. Green film, moss and black spot hide that character rather than add to it.
The aim of a clean is to take away the growth and the grime and leave the stone looking cared for, not stripped back to a uniform colour it never had. Beside a period house, a terrace that still shows its years often sits better than one pushed towards an artificial evenness. We separate what can be lifted safely from what is simply the age of the stone before agreeing how far the clean should go.
Black spot
The small dark marks on sandstone terraces are a lichen growing within the pores of the stone, not dirt sitting on top of it. More pressure does not reach it properly and risks roughening the surface.
We treat it in two stages: a controlled clean with a specialist application for the visible marks, then the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, which works into the porous stone to target the live growth. Heavily marked stone can need a second visit, and we say so at the site visit rather than afterwards.
Edges and levels
Few gardens in the town are flat. Steps down from a terrace, raised beds, retaining walls and the line where paving meets lawn are where soil, leaves and growth collect, and where water behaves differently during cleaning. We work through these edges deliberately rather than concentrating on the open middle, so the finished patio reads as one surface.
Entertaining
Where the patio is used for eating and entertaining, the result people notice is consistency: the paving under the table matching the rest, clean thresholds at the doors and no slippery film in the shaded corner.
Grease and food marks around a barbecue or outdoor kitchen are a different kind of contamination from algae and may not lift in the same way, so mention them at the site visit. We explain what needs moving beforehand; heavy fixed features are worked around carefully, and we point out any limit they create.
Step by step
The order of work stays the same on every patio. The pressure, the products and the time spent on each stage are set by what we found at the visit.
We identify the paving, check the joints and pointing, look at the type of growth and note the planting, glazing and fixed features around it, then explain what will realistically lift.
Furniture and pots are cleared as agreed. Borders, lawns, doors and painted surfaces close to the working area are considered, with protection and rinsing planned before any water is used.
The patio is cleaned at the lowest pressure that achieves the result on that material, worked evenly across the whole area rather than concentrated on individual marks.
Black spot receives its specialist application. Joints that have washed out or broken down are re-sanded once the surface is ready, so the patio is stable underfoot again.
Chiltern EverGuard™ is applied to the clean surface. We then walk you round the patio and explain what was done and what to expect as it dries and weathers.
Know the limits
A thorough clean makes a significant improvement to colour, grip and the look of the joints. It does not rebuild a patio. We aim to restore the original appearance where the condition allows, and we tell you at the site visit where it may not.
Why us
We have worked on patios in Henley-on-Thames and are based in Marlow, a short way down the Thames, so river damp and leafy gardens are familiar ground.
Sandstone, limestone, porcelain and concrete each get their own setting, and black spot is treated with a specialist application rather than chased with force.
Borders, lawns, glazing and painted woodwork near the patio are protected or rinsed as needed, and the working area is left tidy at handover.
Every patio is cleaned by fully insured operatives, and you are told plainly before work starts what can and cannot be achieved.
Nearby
We also clean patios in the villages around the town, including Shiplake and Lower Shiplake by the river, Harpsden, Rotherfield Peppard, Bix and Hambleden. Gardens there share much of the same shade and damp, so the same careful assessment comes first.

Questions
Yes, in most cases it can be reduced significantly. Black spot is a lichen within the pores of the stone, so it is treated with a specialist application rather than pressure. Long-established marks can need a second visit, and we say at the site visit if that is likely.
No. The aim is to remove growth and grime, not the age of the stone. Colour variation, worn edges and long-standing weathering belong to an older terrace, and we set the method so that they stay.
Usually, yes, for smaller items. We tell you before the visit what needs moving. Clearing tables, chairs and pots lets the paving underneath be cleaned evenly with the rest, while heavy or fixed features are worked around carefully.
That depends on what they are. Loose jointing sand can wash out and is re-sanded once the surface is ready. Mortar pointing that is already cracked or failing cannot be made sound by cleaning, so we point it out before work starts and explain what repair it needs.
Yes. It is applied once the patio is clean, to target growth left within the surface and slow its return. Protection typically lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on shade, moisture, the paving and how it is looked after.
No, provided the work is planned properly. Borders, lawns and pots next to the paving are considered before anything is applied, with protection and rinsing carried out where needed. Tell us about anything especially delicate at the site visit.
Sometimes. Sealing suits some stone and not others, and it changes the appearance of the surface. We tell you honestly whether your paving is a good candidate rather than adding it as a matter of course.
