Solar Panel Cleaningin Wokingham
Solar panels often go years after fitting without anyone cleaning them. On Wokingham homes, old and new, we give that first clean the patience it needs, using de-ionised water and a soft brush and nothing else.
- First cleans given extra time
- Built-up moss cleared from edges
- De-ionised water, no chemicals

First cleans
Panels that have never been cleaned need more time, not more force
When an array has been left for several years, the dirt changes character. Pollen and dust bake into a stubborn film, droppings harden, and moss along the bottom frame thickens into a ridge that holds water. None of that calls for harsher methods. It calls for more soaking, more passes and more care at the edges.

Wokingham homes
A market-town centre and its newer neighbours
Wokingham's historic core grew around the Market Place, where early timber-framed buildings, many later faced in brick, sit within a conservation area alongside the red-brick Victorian Town Hall. Beyond it, established neighbourhoods and newer development have extended the town in every direction.
Solar panels appear on both. The town also keeps a good deal of green space and mature planting, so many roofs sit near trees that drop pollen in spring and leaves in autumn. On an array nobody has looked at for a while, those seasons stack up, layer on layer, until the glass looks grey rather than black.
What builds up
How years of dirt change an array
A new array sheds most of its dirt with the rain. Over time, though, the deposits that rain leaves behind begin to bind to each other and to the glass, and each season adds to the last. By the time anyone looks closely, a long-untouched array usually shows several of these.
- Pollen and dust bonded into a grey film across the glass
- Hardened droppings, often concentrated on the top row
- A ridge of moss and debris along each bottom frame
- Lichen spots on the frames where water lingers
Taking it slowly
Why a first clean takes longer
On a first clean we soak each panel well before brushing, so baked film and hardened deposits soften rather than being dragged across the glass. Heavier patches get repeated passes, and the moss ridge on each frame is broken up and brushed out in stages.
It is the same de-ionised water and soft brush as any routine clean. The difference is time, and we allow for it in the quotation, so nobody is tempted to hurry the edges on the day.
Old and new
Arrays on historic and modern roofs alike
In the older parts of town, panels may sit among clay tile, slate or other traditional coverings that should not be walked on. On newer homes, roofs are often higher and steeper than they look from the street. Either way, we work from the ground with a water-fed pole wherever access allows.
Cleaning changes nothing about the building or the array. No panel, bracket or tile is moved, fixed or adjusted, and if we see a slipped tile or a loose bracket, we tell you so the right trade can deal with it.
The method
How we tackle a first clean
Routine cleans follow the same stages, only quicker. On a first visit, more of the time goes into soaking and into the frames.
- 01
Assess the build-up
At the free site visit we look at how much has built up, check the frames, seals and fixings, and plan how to reach every panel from the ground.
- 02
Soak thoroughly
Each panel is soaked with de-ionised water and left briefly, so baked film and old droppings start to soften before the brush arrives.
- 03
Patient brushing
The soft brush works across every panel, with repeated passes on stubborn patches and no scraping or abrasive pads at any point.
- 04
Break up the moss ridge
Moss and compacted debris along the bottom frames are loosened and brushed out in stages, corners included, until water can run off freely.
- 05
Rinse and review
A pure-water rinse leaves the glass to dry clear. We then show you the result and point out any marks that a first clean could not lift.
Expectations
What a first clean can and cannot recover
Most film, droppings and moss come off with time and care. Some deposits left for many seasons leave faint marks set into the surface, and we leave those rather than risk the glass. After a first clean, routine cleans are quicker and simpler.
- Faint marks from long-standing deposits may remain
- We do not quote a figure for any change in output
- Faults with wiring or the inverter need your installer

Questions
Solar Panel Cleaning in Wokingham: your questions
My panels have not been cleaned since they were fitted. Can you still clean them?
Yes. Long build-up takes more soaking and more passes, but it responds to the same de-ionised water and soft brush. We allow extra time in the quotation and tell you afterwards if any faint marks remain.
Will a first clean take longer than a routine one?
Yes. Baked film, hardened droppings and thick moss along the frames all need soaking time and repeated brushing. We plan for that at the site visit, so it is reflected in the quotation.
Can moss damage solar panels?
Yes, if it is left. A thick moss ridge holds water against the bottom frame and seals, traps debris and can spread onto the glass, shading the lowest part of each panel. Clearing it lets water run off the array properly again.
Why not use a stronger cleaner on heavy build-up?
Because the glass and seals matter more than speed. Chemicals and abrasives put the surface at risk and run off the roof into the garden. Soaking with de-ionised water and patient brushing removes the build-up without either.
Will every mark come off after years of build-up?
Not always. Most film, droppings and moss lift with patience, but deposits left for a very long time can leave faint marks in the surface. We would rather leave those than scrape at the glass, and we show you what remains.
How often should panels be cleaned after the first time?
Usually once a year, or twice where trees or birds are close. Routine cleans are quicker because nothing has had time to bind to the glass, and the frames never build up a ridge again.
