Gutter Cleaning · Berkshire
Period cottages in Cookham often have small gutters close above busy gardens, and damp from the river keeps whatever lands in them wet. We clear each run without dropping debris onto your planting, flush the pipes and report what we see.

In brief
A gutter's capacity depends on its profile. Many older cottages carry narrow half-round or shallow sections that were never designed to hold much, so a modest layer of leaf litter and silt takes up a large share of the space. When that happens, water spills over the front edge long before the run looks full, usually at a corner or just short of the outlet.

Cookham homes
Cookham sits low beside the Thames, with period cottages and character homes around the village centre, larger family houses, and newer streets towards Cookham Rise. Cookham Dean stands higher up, among more trees. Across all of them, mature gardens tend to come right up to the walls, with climbers, borders and shrubs directly under the eaves.
The river keeps the air damp, especially in autumn and winter. Leaves, seeds and moss that fall into a gutter here rarely dry out between showers. Instead they stay wet, break down and pack together into a heavy, silty layer that clings to the channel and is slow to shift.
Seeds and blossom
Broad leaves are easy to spot from the garden. The material that causes the most persistent trouble is finer: seeds, blossom, catkins and small fragments of moss that slip into the gutter through spring and summer. Wet, it binds with silt into a dense bed along the bottom of the channel.
By autumn the new leaf fall lands on top, and what looks like a light covering is sitting on a compacted base that has already taken much of the depth. A proper clean removes both layers.
Corners and turns
Cottages extended over the years often have gutters that turn around bays, step down at a lean-to or meet at an internal angle. Water slows at every change of direction, and whatever it is carrying drops out there. An outlet set close to a corner can be blocked by debris that piles up against the angle.
We work along each run in the direction the water travels, giving those turns and the outlets beside them particular attention rather than treating each straight length on its own.
Borders and paths
Wet gutter debris is black, heavy and smells of rot. Scooped out by hand and dropped, it lands on planting, gravel and paving, and is surprisingly hard to clear from a border full of shrubs. In a village where gardens are so close to the house, how the waste is handled matters as much as removing it.
A pole-fed vacuum draws the material straight into the machine. Where a run has to be cleared by hand, we bag the waste as we go and protect the ground below.
How it runs
The method for each run is agreed at the site visit, including any sections that need a tower or ladder instead of the pole.
We trace each run from its high end to the outlet, noting changes of direction, joints that weep and brackets that have slipped, along with the roof edge just above.
The vacuum pole, worked from the ground where possible, takes out leaves, seeds and compacted silt. Anything cleared by hand is bagged straight away so nothing falls into the borders.
Water is run along the channel and down each downpipe to show it is draining. A blockage further on, in a gully or the underground drains, is pointed out for separate attention.
Brackets and joints that have shifted are pushed back into place where that will hold. Cracked sections or runs that have dropped out of line are recorded instead.
Before leaving we talk you through what came out and where, and give you a short written note on the gutters and roof edge.
Plain facts
A clear gutter drains properly if its joints, fall and fixings are sound. Cleaning will not enlarge an undersized profile, reseal a perished joint or mend a cracked length, and it does not reach faults in buried drains.
On older cottages, the gutters may be original or old replacements. If a profile is simply too small for the roof it serves, we will mention it, so you can decide whether that is worth raising with a gutter specialist.
Why us
Waste goes into the vacuum or straight into bags, never dropped onto borders, climbers or gravel beneath the eaves.
Narrow and half-round cottage gutters are cleared gently and checked at every joint, because they have little capacity to spare.
A short, plain note on the joints, brackets and roof edge, so you know what is sound and what may need a repair.
Fully insured operatives, using access chosen at the site visit, with the business owner accountable for every job.
Nearby
Our gutter visits also cover Cookham Dean and Cookham Rise, Furze Platt and Maidenhead to the south, and Bourne End and Wooburn Green across the river. Houses in each have their own mix of trees and roof shapes, so we look before we quote.

Questions
Usually because a small profile has little spare depth. Seeds, silt and moss settle into a compact base along the bottom, and only a thin layer of leaves on top is needed for water to spill over in heavy rain.
No. The vacuum pole draws debris straight into the machine. On runs that have to be cleared by hand, waste is bagged as we go and the ground beneath is protected. Everything leaves the property with us.
Yes. Cast iron is heavy and the joints are often old, so we clear it carefully without levering against it. Rust, cracks and failed seals are reported for a specialist rather than worked on.
Sometimes. Homes beside trees that drop seeds, catkins or blossom in spring can collect enough fine material to cause overflow by summer. We will suggest timing once we have seen what comes out of your gutters.
Yes. Once each run is clear we flush water through the outlets and down the pipes. If water backs up below ground level, we explain what that suggests rather than treating it as part of the gutter clean.
Only minor fixes. A loose bracket can often be re-seated so the run sits correctly again. Where the fall has gone or several fixings have failed, the gutter needs re-hanging by a specialist, and we will say so.
