Gutter Cleaning · Berkshire
Many older Windsor houses still carry cast iron gutters, hoppers and downpipes. We empty the channels without forcing old joints, check the route down to ground level and tell you plainly about any rust, cracks or dropped brackets.

Start here
Period guttering was built to last and much of it has. It is also heavy, brittle in places and held together by joints that have been painted and repainted for decades. Clearing it means taking the debris out without levering against old sections or loosening a bracket that was only just holding. Where something is already failing, we say so instead of disturbing it further.

Windsor houses
Windsor grew around the Castle from the medieval period, and the arrival of the railways in the nineteenth century brought a second wave of building. Clewer, one of the oldest settlements nearby, was gradually absorbed. The result is a town of older brick houses, period terraces and established suburban streets, with newer homes in between.
Plenty of those older properties keep cast iron or traditional-profile gutters, decorative hoppers and downpipes that run down the face of the brickwork. Mature trees line many residential streets, the Thames runs along the north edge of the town and Windsor Great Park lies to the south, so leaves and damp are a steady presence along the rooflines.
Period guttering
Cast iron rusts from the inside where wet debris has sat against it, and the joints between lengths rely on seals that harden with age. A channel packed with sodden leaves holds water against the metal all winter, which is one more reason to keep it empty. Ogee and other decorative profiles also have internal shapes where silt settles.
We clear these runs carefully and do not prise at joints or rest equipment on the gutter itself. What we see once the channel is empty goes into the report.
Hoppers
A hopper head collects water from one or more gutters, and sometimes from a flat roof or a waste pipe, before it enters the downpipe. Because it is open at the top, it catches leaves, moss and the occasional bird's nest, and it is often the first part of the system to fill.
When a hopper blocks, water spills over its rim and runs straight down the brickwork, leaving a dark stain beneath it. We clear hoppers as part of the visit and check that water drops cleanly into the pipe below.
Down to the ground
The rainwater route does not finish at the top of the downpipe. At ground level it may end in a shoe that discharges onto paving, or run into a gully grating that feeds the drains. A gully choked with leaves will back water up and flood the paving around it, even when everything above is clear.
Where these are open and reachable, we look at them during the visit so debris is not simply moved from the gutter to the next restriction. Problems beyond the gully, in the underground drainage, are noted for you to have investigated separately.
Step by step
The order of work is the same for every house. What changes is how much care each section needs, which we judge at the site visit.
Gutters, hoppers, downpipes and their fixings are looked over first, and we note the material, the profile and any sections that are rusting, cracked or sagging before work begins.
Leaves, moss and silt are drawn out with a pole-fed vacuum from the ground where the run allows, so no ladder rests against old cast iron. Elsewhere we use a properly footed ladder.
Hopper heads and outlets are emptied by hand or vacuum, then water is run through so we can see it pass down each pipe and out at the shoe or gully.
Loose modern brackets are re-seated where that is a small job. Corroded fixings, cracked cast iron and failing joints are recorded for a specialist rather than disturbed.
You receive a short account of the gutters and roof edge, including the parts hidden from the street, so you can plan any repair work with the facts in front of you.
Honest limits
An empty gutter drains better, but cleaning cannot undo rust, seal a joint that has given way or straighten a run that has dropped. On older systems, removing the debris sometimes reveals damage it was hiding, and a weep may appear at a joint that was previously plugged with silt.
That is not the clean causing a fault; it is the fault becoming visible. We point it out so it can be dealt with properly by someone who repairs period rainwater goods.
Why us
We work around heavy, aged guttering without prising at it, and we stop and report where a section is too fragile to touch.
Gutters, hoppers, downpipes and the shoe or gully at the bottom are all looked at, not just the stretch visible from the front path.
Debris goes into the vacuum and leaves with us, so paths, steps and planting beneath the eaves are left as we found them.
Our operatives are fully insured, access is agreed at the site visit, and the owner remains accountable for every job.
Nearby
Our visits also take in the neighbourhoods and villages close by: Clewer and Dedworth to the west, Old Windsor and Datchet along the river, and Eton and Eton Wick on the far bank. The same checks apply wherever the house stands.

Questions
Yes, in most cases. We clear them from the ground with a vacuum pole where we can, so nothing leans on the metal, and we do not lever at joints or brackets. Sections that are already badly corroded are reported rather than worked hard.
Yes. Hoppers are open at the top and fill quickly with leaves and nesting material. We empty them and run water through to check that it drops into the downpipe rather than spilling over the rim.
Most often because the hopper or the pipe below it has been blocked and water has been spilling over. A cracked hopper or failed joint can cause the same stain, and once it is cleared we can usually tell which.
Where it is open and reachable, yes. A gully full of leaves can flood the paving around it even when the gutters above are clear. Faults further into the underground drainage are noted for separate investigation.
No. Repairing or replacing cast iron is specialist work. We re-seat loose modern brackets where it is a small job, and for period rainwater goods we describe what we found so you can brief the right tradesperson.
Once or twice a year suits most houses, and more often beside large trees. With cast iron there is an extra reason to keep to it: wet debris left in the channel holds water against the metal and encourages rust.
