On a landscaped garden, the paving may run from a covered dining area to an open terrace, down steps to a lower level and around a pond or water feature. Each part weathers differently. At a free site visit we walk all of it with you, identify the materials and explain how we would treat each area.
Ascot gardens
Mature trees, generous plots and layered terraces
Ascot, North Ascot, South Ascot and Sunninghill share a green, semi-rural character, with mature trees, open space and established residential roads. Plots are often larger than in the nearby towns, and many gardens are landscaped across more than one level, with covered seating, outdoor kitchens and planted borders built into the paving.
Tree cover is the main driver of patio growth here. Leaf and needle fall settles on the paving, canopies hold the moisture in, and shaded terraces may stay damp well into the day. Algae and moss follow, and on natural stone, black spot takes hold in the slabs that rarely see full sun.

Fewer joints, so every line shows
Contemporary terraces laid in large porcelain slabs have fewer joints than traditional paving, which makes each one more noticeable. A dark joint line against a clean slab face frames the whole patio in the wrong colour.
Porcelain itself responds well to a gentle clean; it does not need force just because it is hard. The work is in the finish: an even result across every slab, clean and consistent joints, and tidy perimeters at walls, steps and drainage channels. Grout or pointing that has failed is a repair, and we will point it out rather than wash it away.
Outdoor kitchens
Grease, spills and smoke marks by the grill
Cooking areas leave a different kind of mark from algae. Fat, food and drink can soak into porous stone or sit as a film on porcelain, and they need their own treatment rather than more pressure.
We assess each mark locally and treat it where the surface allows. Older grease that has worked deep into stone may lighten rather than disappear, and we will not overwork the slabs around it chasing a single stain.
Levels and water
Steps, ponds and the order of work
On a terrace built across several levels, we clean from the top down so loosened debris does not land on finished paving below. Treads, risers, retaining edges and narrow landings each collect growth differently and are finished individually.
Where paving meets a pond, rill or other water feature, run-off is planned before the work starts. Wash water and treatment are kept away from the water rather than left to find their own way into it.
Covered areas
Under the pergola and out in the open
Pergolas, awnings and covered seating keep rain off part of the patio. That paving misses the natural rinse that open slabs get, so dust, tracked-in soil and spills build up there, while the exposed terrace beside it collects more algae and weathering.
The two zones need different treatment even when the stone is the same, and a little difference in tone between them is normal. We clean both thoroughly without trying to force them into a single shade.

Where cleaning reaches its limits
A clean terrace looks markedly better and is more pleasant to use, but cleaning restores the surface rather than rebuilding it. We will say at the site visit where the result may be limited.

Can you clean large-format porcelain without marking it?
Yes. Porcelain responds well to a gentle clean, so there is no need for heavy pressure. Most of the effort goes into an even finish across the slabs and clean, consistent joints, which is what makes a large-format terrace look right.
Do you clean around an outdoor kitchen?
Yes, subject to access and the materials involved. Grease and food marks are assessed separately from algae and black spot, because they respond to different treatment. Old grease in porous stone may lighten rather than vanish.
How do you protect a pond next to the patio?
We plan the run-off before we start. The working direction is set so wash water and treatment move away from the pond, and the edge nearest the water is handled with particular care rather than washed towards it.
Will the area under the pergola match the rest?
Not always exactly. Covered paving weathers differently because it misses most of the rain and sun, so a slight difference in tone can remain after both areas are cleaned. We remove the dirt from each without forcing an artificial match.
Can black spot be removed from natural stone?
Usually, yes. Black spot is a lichen, so it is treated with a specialist application followed by the Chiltern EverGuard™ Treatment, not with extra pressure. Heavily marked stone can need a second visit, which we would flag at the site visit.
How long does the protection last under heavy tree cover?
