Gutter Cleaning · Oxfordshire
Thame's mix of old market-town houses and newer family homes means rooflines of every age. We clear the gutters, flush the downpipes, wash the streaked outer faces clean and report on anything we noticed while we were there.

How debris settles
Wind, roof pitch and the position of nearby trees decide where debris lands. It tends to pile up at internal corners, below valleys and at outlets, while the straight lengths between them can look almost empty. We clear the whole system and then flush it, so the parts that looked fine from below are proved to work too.

Thame homes
Thame is an old market town, and its centre puts medieval buildings alongside Georgian and Victorian ones. Further out, Victorian and Edwardian houses give way to established family homes and newer developments. Gutters vary as much as the houses: cast iron survives on some older properties, while most later homes carry uPVC, much of it white and quick to show staining.
The countryside around the town is fairly low-lying in places, particularly towards the River Thame, and after a wet spell shaded rooflines can stay damp for days. Damp guttering grows a green film on its outer face, and leaf litter left in the channel stays wet enough for moss and seedlings to take hold.
Corners and outlets
A gutter can be mostly clear and still overflow, because the debris that matters is the plug over the outlet. Leaves and moss drift along the channel towards the point where water leaves it and pack together there. Internal corners, where two runs meet at an angle, collect material in the same way.
Clearing the open lengths and stopping short of these points leaves the main restriction exactly where it was, so we finish every run at its outlet and check that the water goes down.
The outer face
White uPVC gutters and fascias pick up a film of algae and dirt, especially on shaded elevations and wherever water has been spilling over the front edge. From the street it is often the first thing that makes a roofline look neglected, even when the channel inside is working. Washing it off is part of our gutter visit.
Additions
A rear extension, garage or porch usually brings its own short gutter at a lower height, often catching water and debris from the main roof as well as its own. These runs are out of sight from the front of the house and easily forgotten, yet a blocked one can soak a single wall again and again.
Glass roofs, narrow side passages and planting can limit where we stand, so the method for each of these sections is settled at the site visit.
The work
Each house is done in the same order. What changes is how each run is reached, which we agree with you beforehand.
We note every run, internal corner, outlet and downpipe, along with brackets that look loose and joints that drip, before any debris is touched.
Leaves, moss and seeds are lifted out with a pole-fed gutter vacuum from ground level where it reaches properly, or from a properly footed ladder where it does not.
With the channels clear, water is sent along each gutter and down every pipe so we can see it leave freely. Slow pipes are noted for further investigation.
Green and black streaking is washed from the outer face of the gutters, the fascias and the soffits, with nothing abrasive used on metal or painted finishes.
Brackets and joints that only needed re-seating are dealt with, larger faults are listed, and you receive a short plain summary before we leave.
Honest limits
Clearing and washing leave a gutter working and looking cared for, but neither is a repair.
Why us
Every run is cleared right to its outlet and flushed, so the plug behind most overflows is removed rather than missed.
The streaked outer faces of gutters, fascias and soffits are washed down once the inside is clear, so the work shows from the street.
A short summary of joints, brackets and anything else we noticed, written plainly and without pushing extra work.
Fully insured operatives, with ladders used only where a run cannot be reached properly from the ground.
Nearby
Beyond the town, we clear gutters in Towersey, Tetsworth, Sydenham, Chinnor, Lewknor and Milton Common. Rooflines there range from cottages to modern family homes, and each one is assessed on its own merits.

Questions
Usually because the outlet is blocked. Debris drifts towards the point where water leaves the run and packs into a plug there, while the open lengths stay fairly clear. Clearing and flushing the outlet normally solves it.
Yes. Once the inside of the gutter is clear, we wash the algae and dirt off the outer face and along the fascia and soffit. uPVC that has yellowed with age will look cleaner but will not return to bright white.
Yes. Lower runs over extensions, garages and porches are included in the visit. Where glass roofs or narrow passages limit access, we agree how each section will be reached when we see the house.
Only where we need to. Most runs are cleared with a pole-fed vacuum standing on the ground. A properly footed ladder is kept for sections the vacuum cannot reach well, such as those behind deep overhangs.
Not if the joint itself has failed. If it has simply pulled apart, we can usually re-seat it. A split or perished seal needs a gutter specialist, and we will tell you which it is.
For most homes, once or twice a year. Properties near large trees or below a mossy roof need it more often. We suggest a sensible interval after seeing how much came out of your gutters.
