Sandstone Patio Cleaning and Repointing in Cholesbury
Sandstone patio cleaning and repointing in Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire: black spot treated, failed joints replaced, protected with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Moss and lichen cleared from the concrete tile roof, black spot treated in the sandstone, and the walls, copings and fencing protected with Chiltern EverGuard™.

From the air, the roof of this Aylesbury home told the story: moss had settled along every course of its slate-effect concrete tiles, with yellow lichen spreading across the slopes and around the chimney. Left in place, moss holds water against the roof and sheds into the gutters.
At ground level the same growth had taken hold of everything else — the sandstone patio, the stone walls and copings around it, the brick garden walls, the paving and the fencing. Cleaning one surface would simply have left the others to re-seed it.

Black spot is a lichen that roots itself into the pores of sandstone. Here it had peppered the slabs across the patio, dulling the reds and golds of the circle.

The brick walls that enclose the garden carried moss along the full length of their copings, with algae on the faces below — exactly where it would wash straight back down onto a freshly cleaned patio.
The fencing, the window sills, the front paving, the pathway and the block paved driveway all needed the same attention, so the house could be finished as one surface rather than a clean patio beside dirty walls.

A powered access platform brought Chiltern Surface Co technicians right up to the roof, close enough to work every tile at the lowest pressure the surface would take and with the most detail possible.
The moss and lichen were cleared at low pressure across both slopes and around the chimney — you can see the cleaned tiles beside the untouched ones — and the roof was protected with Chiltern EverGuard™ once it was clean.

The sandstone was the heart of this job. Soft washing lets the chemistry do the work: Chiltern Surface Co holds a range of treatments and the knowledge of which to use on which surface, and when. That judgement is what separates a clean that lasts from one that looks good for a month.
The black spot was treated and substantially improved, and the stone was cleaned and brightened without being driven at — leaving the surface and its jointing sound. The concrete patio was given a full clean of its own.

The stone patio walls and copings, the brick garden walls, the fencing, the window sills, the pathway and the block paved driveway were each cleaned at low pressure with the treatment suited to them.
Every window affected by the work was then finished with pure water, so nothing from the clean was left on the glass.

Chiltern EverGuard™ is our proprietary surface protection system, with a professional biocide at its heart. It penetrates the pores of the material, kills the growth living inside it and inhibits regrowth. It went on as the final stage, once everything else was clean — to the roof, the sandstone patio, the stone and brick walls and their copings, and the fencing.
It keeps working after it goes on: any remaining black spot continues to die back and weather away over the following weeks, so the surfaces carry on improving after the team has left.

Moss gone from every course and the lichen lifted from the slopes and the chimney — cleaned from powered access and protected with Chiltern EverGuard™.

Under the black spot and algae was a warm Indian sandstone. Treated, cleaned and protected with Chiltern EverGuard™, the reds and golds of the circle read again.

Patio, walls, copings and fencing were cleaned and protected together, so nothing is left to re-seed the stone — and the block paved driveway at the front was cleaned to match.

Chiltern Surface Co carried out this project in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire: the sandstone patio cleaning in Aylesbury, the concrete tile roof, and the walls, fencing and paving around the house. We also offer patio cleaning, driveway cleaning, roof cleaning and roof moss removal across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire and Surrey, including Goring, Watlington, Cookham and Twyford.
Moss, lichen and black spot live in the pores of a surface, not just on it, which is why a lasting result is a staged process — controlled cleaning, targeted treatment and protection with Chiltern EverGuard™ — rather than a single pass with a pressure washer.
Advice

Patios
Clean sandstone safely with a surface-specific method that removes dirt, algae, moss, and black spot without scarring the stone or damaging the joints.

Patios & Natural Stone
Black spot looks like dirt, which is precisely why it is so often treated like dirt. The trouble is that established lichen on porous sandstone is a biological problem, not simply a dirty surface.

Patios
A green or slippery patio is a common winter problem. Learn why it happens, which paving materials need care and how to reduce slip risk without damaging the surface.
