The town

A New Town, its industrial area and the old High Street

Hemel Hempstead lies about 30 miles from our base in Marlow, by the M25 and the A41. Designated a New Town in 1947, it was planned with its industry gathered at Maylands, near junction 8 of the M1, its shops along Marlowes and the Old Town at the northern end.

Maylands
The town's industrial area since the first factory opened on Maylands Avenue in 1950, Maylands now holds offices, warehouses, distribution buildings and trade counters, and is part of the Hertfordshire Innovation Quarter enterprise zone. Large clad elevations, profiled roofs and HGV yards are worked around deliveries.
Old Town
The High Street is a conservation area below the Norman flint church of St Mary's. Many fronts are 18th-century brick or plaster over older timber frames, now restaurants, shops and offices, so the method is tried on a small area first.
Marlowes and Apsley
The New Town centre on Marlowes is largely pedestrianised, with post-war parades and office buildings. To the south, the former paper mill sites at Apsley now hold offices, retail warehouses and a marina.
Local conditions
Fronts facing the M1, the A414 and the A41 collect traffic film, and trees along the Gade and Bulbourne valleys keep walls damp and drop leaves into gutters.
Around Hemel Hempstead
Leverstock Green, Adeyfield, Boxmoor, Apsley, Nash Mills, Bovingdon, Kings Langley and Redbourn.

Safety and site control

Planned before we arrive

Roofs
We identify the roof covering before any work is proposed and request the asbestos register. Asbestos-cement and fragile roofs are never pressure-washed or walked on.
Wash water
We plan wash-water control and drain protection for every site.
Listed and conservation buildings
We use test areas and low-pressure methods on listed and conservation-area buildings.
Schools and care settings
We work in school holidays and INSET days, or behind exclusion zones away from pupils and residents.

Questions

Common questions

Can a distribution site at Maylands stay operational during the works?

Yes. We record dock schedules, HGV routes and pedestrian crossings at the survey and work the yard and elevations zone by zone around them, at night or at weekends where that suits the site.

Do you clean cladding and roofs on the same visit?

Yes, where the access suits it. Roofs and gutters are done first, then the cladding below, so cleaned panels are not marked by water from above.

Can the Old Town's listed frontages be cleaned?

Yes. The survey records each material and any past repairs, and a test area is agreed with you before the full elevation is cleaned.

What happens after the survey?

You receive a fixed-price proposal with the specification of works, programme and exclusions, and site-specific RAMS before mobilisation. When the work is finished, a completion report records it with before-and-after photography.

What should we include in a survey request?

The site address, what the building is used for, the surfaces involved, operating hours and any access limits. For roofs and gutters we also need the asbestos register and drainage drawings.
