The county

Office towns, working estates and old market centres

Chiltern Surface Co Ltd is based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The west of the county is reached by the M40 and the M25, and the A41 runs on from the M25 past Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted to Tring.

Property here runs from office districts and logistics estates to schools, care settings and listed buildings. Each needs its own method, so every site is surveyed before it is priced.

Offices and business parks
Clarendon Road, near Watford Junction station, is Watford's main office district, with Croxley Park on the town's western edge. Entrances and visitor parking stay in use, with one zone worked at a time.
Industrial estates
Maylands, on the east side of Hemel Hempstead, is the town's main industrial area and one of the sites of the county's enterprise zone, with steel-clad units, profiled roofs and HGV yards.
Historic centres
St Albans' city centre became one of the country's first conservation areas in 1969; Tring and Hemel Hempstead's Old Town are conservation areas too. Timber frame, flint, soft red brick and render sit side by side, so a test area comes first.
Local conditions
Tring, Ashridge and the west of the county sit in the Chilterns National Landscape, where beech woods shade elevations and autumn leaves block gutters. Traffic on the M1, M25 and A41 dulls roadside elevations and signage.

Safety and site control

Planned before we arrive

Roofs
We identify the roof covering before any work is proposed and request the asbestos register. Asbestos-cement and fragile roofs are never pressure-washed or walked on.
Wash water
We plan wash-water control and drain protection for every site.
Listed and conservation buildings
We use test areas and low-pressure methods on listed and conservation-area buildings.
Schools and care settings
We work in school holidays and INSET days, or behind exclusion zones away from pupils and residents.

Questions

Common questions

Which parts of Hertfordshire do you cover?

Our coverage includes Watford, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Tring, Berkhamsted, Kings Langley, Rickmansworth, Harpenden, Bushey and the business estates around them. For an address close to the county boundary, give us the postcode and we will confirm coverage.

Is the site survey free in Hertfordshire?

Yes. The site survey is free, and we visit within five working days anywhere in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire and Surrey.

Can the work be phased around an occupied office or a working yard?

Yes. We note entrances, deliveries and HGV routes when we survey, then phase the work zone by zone behind exclusion areas, out of hours where a site needs it.

Do you work on listed buildings in the conservation areas?

Yes. We record each elevation first and prove the method on a test area before wider cleaning, at low pressure where the material needs it.

What should I send with a survey request?

The address and postcode, the property type, the surfaces involved, any access limits and your preferred timing, with photographs if you have them. For roof or gutter work, the asbestos register and drainage drawings too.
