The county

From the Thames to the Vale of Aylesbury

Chiltern Surface Co Ltd is based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, on the Thames in the south of the county. High Wycombe, Beaconsfield and Bourne End are close by; Aylesbury, the county town, lies beyond the Chiltern Hills in the Vale of Aylesbury.

The county includes busy town centres, business parks, schools, managed residential sites, industrial estates and rural commercial properties.

Town centres
The centres of Marlow and Aylesbury and the Old Towns of Beaconsfield and Amersham are conservation areas, and many of their buildings are listed. Frontages open onto public footways beside neighbouring businesses, and the survey records entrances, signage and pedestrian routes.
Business estates
Cressex Business Park in High Wycombe, Globe Business Park in Marlow and the business parks around Aylesbury mix offices with industrial and warehouse units. They bring coated cladding, service yards, loading areas and delivery routes that must stay in use during the works.
Local conditions
A broad band of the county lies within the Chilterns National Landscape, where tree cover and shade encourage algae and organic growth, and leaf fall fills gutters. Traffic on the M40, A40 and A41 leaves film on roadside elevations.
Schools
School sites combine several surface types with heavy daily movement, so they need a joined-up specification rather than an isolated method. The schools and colleges page covers them in full.
One site or several
Where an enquiry covers several blocks on a managed development or a portfolio, each property is surveyed and specified on its own. Several sites under one contact and one standard are covered by multi-site and portfolio contracts.

Safety and site control

Planned before we arrive

Roofs
We identify the roof covering before any work is proposed and request the asbestos register. Asbestos-cement and fragile roofs are never pressure-washed or walked on.
Wash water
We plan wash-water control and drain protection for every site.
Listed and conservation buildings
We use test areas and low-pressure methods on listed and conservation-area buildings.
Schools and care settings
We work in school holidays and INSET days, or behind exclusion zones away from pupils and residents.

Questions

Common questions

Can several exterior services be combined in one project?

Yes. A project may combine façade or cladding cleaning with roof, gutter, high-level or ground-level work. The survey decides which to include, and one fixed-price proposal sets them out with a specification of works, programme and exclusions.

Can the work be planned around an occupied site?

Yes. Works are phased zone by zone behind agreed exclusion areas, so access can be maintained wherever the site conditions allow, and out-of-hours working is available.

Do you provide one-off and planned maintenance cleaning?

Yes. Some sites need a one-off project; others are better served by planned preventative maintenance (PPM), on a cycle set by exposure, trees, traffic, shade and the surface. Where the asset warrants it, the completion report ends with a PPM proposal and a suggested review cycle.

Which parts of Buckinghamshire do you cover?

Our coverage includes Marlow, High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Amersham, Aylesbury, Chesham, Gerrards Cross, Princes Risborough, Great Missenden, Bourne End, Penn and the surrounding communities, business estates and rural commercial properties. Near a county boundary, send the full address or postcode and we will confirm coverage.

What should I provide with my enquiry?

The site address, property type, exterior areas involved, photographs if available, access information and any deadline or preferred working period. For roof or gutter work we also ask for the site's asbestos register and drainage drawings.
