Building and client

Building and client

The National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire: a working school with students, staff and visitors on site. The east-facing elevation of its main building is about 11 metres high and 24 metres wide, in render panels, above a courtyard and walkways of concrete paving.

The problem

The problem

Algae, lichen and moss had established on the east-facing façade. The concrete paving, about 600 square metres of courtyard and walkways, carried black spot, moss, algae and ingrained dirt, and the channel drains at the foot of the building had silted up. The work had to fit around a site in use and the start of the new term.

What we did

What we did

  • Access method

The façade was soft washed from powered access set up in the car park, operated by our own IPAF-accredited Chiltern Surface Co technicians, with the area around the platform cordoned off throughout.

  • Days on site

    Four: 12, 19 and 21 September and 2 October 2026.

  • How the site kept working

The paving was cleaned area by area, and each working area stayed cordoned off until it was safe to reopen. Two of the four days were Saturdays, when fewer students and staff were on site.

  • The scope

Render façade soft washed from powered access. Courtyard paving pressure washed, then treated for algae and moss. Channel drains cleared of silt.
